everyone appealing to me whom i meet here turns out to live/originate from somewhere else

I feel this. I'm glad to be able to live comfortably in a nice neighborhood surrounded by friends but... the bar seems to be set sooooooo low here. I feel like all of the creative and ambitious people have left. I feel bored in a way I didn't know existed until I moved here. But I can't undervalue not having to worry about money and being able to live almost anywhere in the city that I want.

One of my jobs has a really stellar set of coworkers, though. Some of them are from Philly and the suburbs and I like them. But I get what you're saying. This place seems like it's still in the 1970s.

I guess I always thought a time machine would be cool

what's weird to me is that almost every time i'm in philly, i only hang out with people who also grew up in philly, or are friends with people whom i grew up with in philly.

also, not all of the creative and ambitious people have left. evidenced by many friends who are doing quite well working in art and so on. eh.

some of it depends on where interests lie, you know? philly is great to me because a lot of friends who live there are into communal living, punk rock, and/or weird art. it kind of reminds me of oakland writ small, plus its cheaper.

My friend was at that show; apparently there was glitter and gongs and a clarinet?

I didn't notice any glitter (just the usual scraps of confetti from previous shows falling from the fans, rafters, speaker stacks, etc), and for most of the show I was too far to the left to see one of the two drummers (Thor Harris, I think?) who seemed to be on random instrument duty, but presumably he would have been the guy with the clarinet. What I did see of him was awesome, though- ridiculously buff shirtless 40-something dude with waist-length hair swaying back and forth and sawing on what I presume is the Handmade Violin Thing from the LP credits list.

Gira was on top form, too; I got tired just standing for three hours, but he was jumping across the stage, screaming, spitting, everything.

I wish I'd taken some video of the three fratbros who were standing in front of me, though, because they were fucking hilarious. All three were drinking constantly, and each one had their own little routine:

Bro the First: SUPER FUCKING INTENSE AIR DRUMMING. Like, head bowed down to waist level, headbanging, dramatic drum rolls all through the show.
Franz Broseph II: Conservative haircut, Fonz jacket, hands in pockets, lots of weirdly aggressive chin-jutting.
Third Bro For Whom I Cannot Think Of A Pat Nickname: Actual booty-shaking. Stomping. Air guitar to totally different songs. Mimed banging his head against a support pillar. <i>Literal honest to god jazz hands</i>.

Toward the end of the night they formed their own little mosh pit of three and I was seriously worried I would end up having to call 911.
