real qn: are trailers more blown out on the t&o tip than the features themselves?

goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

Constant Gardner was very t&o. After I noticed it, the deliberate changes really stood out. Like they obviously painted walls and dressed the sets with t&o props to make it all conform. Which actually looked a lot better than some of these more recent movies that are just aggressively graded that way. But it's still dumb as hell.

I mean, this isn't a perfect example of what's been mentioned here, but I didn't use it because it was too close to bother.

this thread is not to document those colors occurring au naturel or even in the production design of a given shot, but the digital manipulation to amp it up and flatten it out

Almost literally every shot in Silent Witness (and then the news!) tonight was built around teal and orange, in SW in a very obviously filtered / digitally altered way. Why is it so prevalent?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

i guess the explanations were on another movie thread

warm (white person) flesh has an orangey tone, the opposing color on the wheel from there is teal. it makes faces pop out of the background.

goole, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

Least it's not green and lavender, I guess.

RMDE at the people who think this is somehow normal, natural, or excusable.

warm (white person) flesh has an orangey tone, the opposing color on the wheel from there is teal. it makes faces pop out of the background.

Yes it's a contrast in color temperature. The problem is that of course it's not the only possible contrast in color temperature to use. And more importantly, a contrast in color temperature is not always desirable! Nor is it the only means of visual contrast.

Contrast in luminosity is far more important. There can also be contrast between different hues of a similar color temperature. And there are of course visual contrasts in size and texture, moving objects vs. static objects, and things that are in or out of focus. Out of all of the ways to get contrast and direct the viewer's attention within a moving picture, a contrast in color temperature is by far the least important, and least interesting.

Imagine a scene that takes place in the desert. It's all shades of dusty brown and beige, there's a rusted old mining equipment in the tumbleweeds, and the sky has brownish smoggy golden hour glow. Then in the midst of that there's a brand new shiny red car that stands out. Everything in the scene could be very close together in hue and yet there could still be an extreme contrast to the image. And the reddish hues would help reinforce a feeling of oppressive heat. But a contemporary production designer would probably use a teal car instead. The contrast would be greater but would that be necessary? How would that actually improve the scene?

yes. teal and orange is very specifically about a digital color grading trend, it's not about you suddenly noticing that people have been mixing hot and cold colors for centuries!
