I've never run an Ironman and never will, but I damn near teared up at this video this morning. I can only imagine the overwhelming feelings of fatigue/accomplishment/delirium that they must be experiencing.

16 miles done. 8:41 pace. Absolutely killed it today. Everything finally went right during a run.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

that's a great feeling^^

tobo73, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

Exactly. Not sure what got into me, runs of that distance I usually go at 9:15 to 9:45 pace. Nice and cool in the mid 60s this morning, and I think that helped a lot.

Now I'm starting to think it's feasible that I could add 20 seconds to the pace and finish a marathon sub 4.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

i did 4 miles just now, but it's about 30 degrees out so i'm quite happy with that.

my nike+ is going haywire lately tho, really annoying. keeps getting it wrong.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

Jeff that's great, sounds like your training is going well!

Got up this morning and did a hilly six miles and that was lovely, but god, it's SO HOT NOW though. Just been gardening for a couple of hours and that was bad enough but running in it eeeeek... Ronan yr nuts.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

Have been steadily increasing the miles for the last couple of weeks but also trying to get plenty of rest and especially ***going to bed at a sensible time*** (most nights anyway) and it really felt this morning that ~mutations~ are starting to occur and I'm developing some sort of runner's body again. Felt fairly coordinated for once and finished with plenty of energy left too, really enjoying it at the moment.

same here, only with my iphone gps. the other day i was running and the first auto-feedback it gave me was (1 mile, total time 5 minutes, 32 seconds). which would have been outstanding if i could at a pace approaching that

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes garmin tells me i was running at a 0:44 mile

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

My GPS is wonky when I start my runs downtown. Stupid buildings.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

Ended up with 43 miles last week and passed 100 for the month. If I run out my schedule the rest of the month, I'll end up around 175. Quite shocking considering all the injury issues I've had the last 2 years. Actually feeling good about this marathon now.

Jeff, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

Starting to like my run commutes home. I finally got my backpack to fit well around my scrawny shoulders. Basically I have to strap it down to the smallest setting so it doesn't bounce (bounce, bounce).

Here I am, very sweaty:

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

did 6.85 miles in about 54 mins today, think this broke most of my records.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

wow, great job! you're right where i want to be in about a year. i mean, it's where i'd like to be NOW, but i think if i keep up my current pace of progression i could reasonably be there next summer.

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

So tired you guys. This running thing can be exhausting. No idea how people do 100 mile weeks. I'm approaching 50 and I feel like I could lie down and sleep for a week. I guess I'm just not totally acclimated to the mileage.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 11:34 (thirteen years ago)

Also have ravenous hunger.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 11:36 (thirteen years ago)

Most I've ever done in a week is 80, I think. At a point you end up having to run twice a day and there's no way I have the dedication/time management skills to do that.

Cong rat ululations (seandalai), Friday, 24 August 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

I hear you on the tiredness thing. Have had a couple of runs during previous marathon training cycles where I was basically falling asleep while I was running, then waking up with jolt. I know this is stating the blindingly obvious here, but do take any opportunities that you can to take early nights, cos it does make a big difference both in terms of how well you recover from your runs and also avoiding illness.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSIDRHUWlVo

^ was googling correct running technique and found this video which is a pretty good imo and certainly a lot better than some of the other crap on youtube, even though it does leave a couple of things unanswered (e.g. initiating elastic recoil in the hip at full extension by bringing your leg forward doesn't make any sense to me). Still transitioning to more of a midfoot style after being a heel-striker for years and I'm certainly having a lot less pain in my knees and shins. Kind of sore in my calves though, I think I'm trying to drive forward with them too much instead of just letting my foot pop off the ground.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

Also flofl @ "6.00 min per mile - marathon race pace"

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 12:51 (thirteen years ago)

That would be more like my 100m race pace

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 12:52 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I'm taking early nights alright. I'll probably go to bed at 8 tonight since I'm getting up at 4 am to do my 18 miler tomorrow. Should probably cut back on the drinking though. I usually only drink on the nights before rest days, but the effects seem to linger.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 12:58 (thirteen years ago)

4am, oh that's brutal

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

It got hot again, so I'm trying to avoid the heat. High of 93 tomorrow. :(((((

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

hot enough to boil yer gels

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

Speaking of gels, what does everyone use? Hammer gels are really the only ones I can stomach. GU seems too thick to me.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

Might just be britishes brands but I used to use vanilla Squeezy until they stopped doing that flavour, so now I use the RHUBARB & CUSTARD(!) or strawberry yogurt flavour Torq gels. They're also a bit thick and they're VERY strongly flavoured, but they're also really delicious...

Tried a chocolate Clif Shot for the first time at about mile 22 of the last Brighton marathon cos they were handing them out and I'd always liked the sound of them. Big mistake, it was like eating a spoonful of very dark chocolate spread - really hard to swallow and made me feel pretty nauseous too.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

Never got the hang of gels myself (possibly a mistake), I'm averse to running with anything but the minimum of gear and my digestive system is very delicate when it comes to racing.

Cong rat ululations (seandalai), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

i got new balance trail minimus for lifting in because they were on sale on the internet and running shoes are bad for lifting and i did my treadmill warm up in them and it felt amazing. like my heels were naturally not touching the ground and i felt like i was floating. however my calves are very tired!

horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

Were your heels touching at all?

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

they were just barely but i didn't feel it, i was definitely running more on the front of my foot. i am not really a heel striker in regular shoes though. it was like my feet were landing how they normally do but adjusting for having nothing under them.

horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

I see people that look like they are running on their tiptoes sometimes. That would destroy me.

I pretty much land slight heel strike with a quick transition to mid foot. Seems to be working ok.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's more important where your foot lands rather than how it lands.
More under you than out in front of you.

Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

yeah there is a guy i see out sometimes. i think he is from kenya or something. he jumps up so high when he runs and his heels are so far off the ground. it's crazy. it wasn't like that. i just felt like i was having kind of an epiphany like, oh this is running. lol.

horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

however i only run a mile to warm up and i know you are supposed to gradually adjust to these so i will be doing regular running in my regular shoes.

horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

18 miles done. The heat is such a game changer for me. Definitely have to adjust my goals based on what the game day temp is.

Jeff, Saturday, 25 August 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

lol so my calves are so sore i can barely walk. i'll be more careful in the future.

horribl ecreature (harbl), Sunday, 26 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I'll ever go below a 4mm heel to toe drop on my running shoes. I'm sure anyone could get used to 0 drop shoes, but the transition period is too long and I'm impatient. Really liking my Brookes PureFlow these days. Just picked up a second pair.

Jeff, Monday, 27 August 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

Feel sort of bad, but not really by skipping my 4 mi recovery run yesterday. I already had 44 miles for the week and this week is my peak mileage week. Thought I would give it a rest before really going for it this week (8, 4, 10, 8, 20, beer)

Jeff, Monday, 27 August 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

Run today put me over 175 miles for the month!!!!!jdbejdbdnak

That's 74.5 miles more than I have ever run in a month. And best of all, I'm still uninjured. Very tired, but uninjured.

Jeff, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

I'm celebrating by drinking beer. And then I'll run 20 miles on Saturday.

Jeff, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

love this, feels like ninja

lag∞n, Friday, 31 August 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'll work on that some more soon. most importantly they are great for weightlifting, i felt a lot stronger just because i was standing flat on my feet. this morning i ran 2 miles outside in normal shoes. it was hot and i was slow.

horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 31 August 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

Jeff, Friday, 31 August 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

i use my minimal shoes for working out too

lag∞n, Friday, 31 August 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Did a sweet 6.5m today, Nike+ fucked up but was in and around 55 mins. Love the days when it's effortless.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 31 August 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

12 miles today in ~90-degree heat. First time I had gone into double figures in at least 6 wks. It did not go well. Struggled to finish. I hope it was just the heat.

tobo73, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

Probably the heat. It ruins everything.
