50 is a lot. I'm not sure most of our bodies were meant for that, but you think you can handle it for a few weeks? I think 35 is about the max that I can sustain.

tobo73, Monday, 13 August 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

We'll see. I have 8 weeks to the marathon and I'll probably only hit 50 once, the rest of the weeks will be between 30 and 45.

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 12:59 (thirteen years ago)

What bums me out is that I've had to eschew all speed and tempo work because it was hurting me. All my miles have just been at an easy pace of 8:50 to 9:30. Not going to get any faster like that.

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

i'm the opposite lately, my speeds are getting way quicker but i need to ignore the time and put some real distance in.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 13 August 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

1) I saw Jeff running the other day and he was so focused that I whizzed past on my bike, smiling and waving, and he didn't notice. That guy is all the way in the zone!! Also I could never ever run that much -- I have been doing this for several years now and I still don't even pay attention to distance. I just go out there, run to a halfway point, and then circle around home. There's no way that I could keep track of miles per week or pace or anything.

2) Question: why do some people wear those compression knee socks?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

Supposedly aids recovery. That's debatable, but they do feel good to lounge around in. It's like someone constantly hugging my calves.

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

Recovery from an injury or just from running?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Just running.

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

i should set goals like that. i think i'm in a running funk -- went to the gym yesterday and ran for just 30 min.

rayuela, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

That's a good amount!

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)

LL, next time you run I'm going to follow you and then let you know you exact mileage and pace.

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

J/k. I would never do that

Jeff, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

you'd be bored if you did that for sure, but at least it wouldn't take much time

^ Don't know if you lot have seen this film about Brother Colm, the Irish missionary who's been deeply involved in Kenya's success in distance running over the years (he's David Rudisha's coach for starters). It's been on the TV here a couple of times and I kept missing it so I'm pretty glad to have finally found the whole thing on Vimeo. Some really stunning sequences of his athletes running through the Kenyan landscape, the ease and fluidity with which they move is just so beautiful, probably a good thing to have playing in your head when you run.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Monday, 13 August 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

That guy in the green shirt btw is Eamonn Coghlan. I'm sure that LocalGarda or seandalai will correct me if I'm wrong here but I'm guessing he'd probably be Ireland's most internationally successful runner after Sonia O'Sullivan.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Monday, 13 August 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah that's probably fair, though John Treacy (or going back further, Ronnie Delaney) might have a claim on the basis of winning an Olympic medal unlike Coughlan.

Cong rat ululations (seandalai), Monday, 13 August 2012 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

ah, i knew i'd forgotten about the old guys

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Monday, 13 August 2012 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

Did 4 miles with intervals tonight, very different indeed, in some ways easier than trudging at one pace tho afterwards I am definitely more red-faced etc.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Thinkin about ~running~ again.

for the sake of future hipstorians (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

Do it.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

tried running on the streets recently, thinking it would mean i got more running in since it meant i just had to leave my apt and start running, but the heat and the dusty streets and traffic lights and cars is all just ugh.

rayuela, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

started back up again a couple of weeks ago. looking at runkeeper i've started back up this time of the year for the past couple of years but it never lasts longer than a month so i don't know how long i'll keep it up. so far i've been running every other day, started out with just a 2-mile route and am gradually bumping it up, so i'm at like 2.75 miles now.

wanted to find a 5k to register for to motivate me to keep going but it's complicated, there are so many of them and some of them seem really relaxed and others are more intense and they involve some kind of charity and they all cost different amounts to register.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

when does everyone run? morning? evening?

i prefer to work out/run in the mornings, which worked when i woke up early, but lately i have been completely unable to wake up before 8 which is far too late even for work. which translates into not running at all.

rayuela, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

torn about setting an "objective," like completing an event. i don't think i want to be running like i did when i was preparing for my last running events (2 years ago-- i think i've run 6 miles in the intervening time).

also, i committed a lot of time to riding my bike in the past 4 months for an event, and it really didn't pan out, so i'm feeling a little bitter about the time and energy lost.

for the sake of future hipstorians (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

just knowing me and my (lack of) work ethic and will power, i need to set up something like a 5k to keep me motivated over the long term - i have to know that i will have to run 5k in __ weeks or have wasted the registration money, otherwise i'll just get lazy and give up again

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

N/A I was going to recommend the burgers & beer 5k, but it seems pricy, even for Chicago, but there is a beer included. The Elvis is Alive 5k would be a good one because it isn't chip timed, cheaper, and generally non competitive. But it is this thursday.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah those are both too soon, i need a couple of weeks at least probably

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

Let me look at the calendar and I'll make a recommendation.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

cool thanks

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

when does everyone run? morning? evening?

was always an evening runner until this summer, i find it hard to get up but i always get a huge buzz out of running at 0630 or whatever.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

N/A. Here is a listing of all the races through August and September http://bit.ly/PVIPHd. Bucktown and Judicata are popular ones that people run. Run Against Traffick/Octoberfest would be lower key. Avoid anything Komen related, obvs.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

morning for me, dark and cool preferably

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

Evening for me. Would just have to get up too early to run in the morning.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

I have gotten into the habit of 6 AM runs and am loving it, even in the dark of winter. Only prob is the time constraint of having to get home to get the day started.

tobo73, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

I'm an evening runner, mostly because I barely make it to work on time as it is.

Has anyone else gone from a job where you are on your feet all day to one where you are mostly sedentary or vice versa? I did that about 2 years ago, and I used to have a lot more energy after work when I was walking around picking up stuff all day than now when I just sit in a chair and stare at a screen.

the weird bad smell multiverse (los blue jeans), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

daytime runner, usually late morning (prefer running on empty stomach)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 07:10 (thirteen years ago)

Late morning would be ideal. I would love to be able to run at 10 to 11 am every day.

Jeff, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

Evening or night only.

Cong rat ululations (seandalai), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:42 (thirteen years ago)

11 miles last night, which is a lot for a mid week run for me.

Jeff, Thursday, 16 August 2012 12:51 (thirteen years ago)

Haven't been able to run at all for 12 weeks, following a bike accident. I can cycle again and walking is fine but as soon as I try to run within minutes my leg is sore (a cursory stab in the dark on various websites suggests it might be an adductor strain). I went to A&E after the accident and their view was 'you can walk on it, albeit with some difficulty, therefore it's not broken', and my unhelpful doctor a week later (whilst refusing to prescribe me any painkillers) said it would be sore for about 6 weeks. I guess I need to see a physio? Can you just go to your GP and ask for this, or will I have to go private? (I'm talking UK, btw).

useless chamber, Thursday, 16 August 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

I've never run an Ironman and never will, but I damn near teared up at this video this morning. I can only imagine the overwhelming feelings of fatigue/accomplishment/delirium that they must be experiencing.

Jeff, Friday, 17 August 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

16 miles done. 8:41 pace. Absolutely killed it today. Everything finally went right during a run.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

that's a great feeling^^

tobo73, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

Exactly. Not sure what got into me, runs of that distance I usually go at 9:15 to 9:45 pace. Nice and cool in the mid 60s this morning, and I think that helped a lot.

Now I'm starting to think it's feasible that I could add 20 seconds to the pace and finish a marathon sub 4.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

i did 4 miles just now, but it's about 30 degrees out so i'm quite happy with that.

my nike+ is going haywire lately tho, really annoying. keeps getting it wrong.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 18 August 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

Jeff that's great, sounds like your training is going well!

Got up this morning and did a hilly six miles and that was lovely, but god, it's SO HOT NOW though. Just been gardening for a couple of hours and that was bad enough but running in it eeeeek... Ronan yr nuts.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

Have been steadily increasing the miles for the last couple of weeks but also trying to get plenty of rest and especially ***going to bed at a sensible time*** (most nights anyway) and it really felt this morning that ~mutations~ are starting to occur and I'm developing some sort of runner's body again. Felt fairly coordinated for once and finished with plenty of energy left too, really enjoying it at the moment.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

my nike+ is going haywire lately tho, really annoying. keeps getting it wrong.

same here, only with my iphone gps. the other day i was running and the first auto-feedback it gave me was (1 mile, total time 5 minutes, 32 seconds). which would have been outstanding if i could at a pace approaching that

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes garmin tells me i was running at a 0:44 mile

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Saturday, 18 August 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

My GPS is wonky when I start my runs downtown. Stupid buildings.
