Longtime ILXors - how has this board changed over time?

altho in our case it's more like treadmillical

this is not the first place i would go to share earnest thoughts about a record, these days

sounds like a personal problem

But really, I seldom post personal thoughts on very many records but I don't know that I'd do so elsewhere. I appreciate reading thoughts on records.

if ilx is so dedicated to not repeating old conversations, how come the politics threads keep retreading the same dialectics?

i think you'll find that political discussion pre- and through 08 was a bit different. people are much less explanatory and verbose now. maybe up through the passing of the health care act, for the americans.

though it's hard to dissociate that shift in ilx discourse from general irl liberal fatigue

though what shakey said, too. people don't change their minds really.

i do sort of wonder if the current ilx lull is about the internet more generally. i am too old to keep up with tumblr/twitter/etc though (probably these are not even the things anymore! probably there is something new), so i will probs continue to contribute to the current ilx lull.

i do miss some old posters.

every time I get fatigued/tired of ILX I trawl through old excelsior threads looking for posts that made me laugh back in the day and I stumble across gems like this:

i know i have many times threatened a mouthrape/arson sat nite but who hasnt think abt it apocalypto is an amazing movie

twitter is p amazing imho but Ilx stands apart from all the social stuff in that it's for conversation, which is something the whole Internet has been aiming for forever but barely exists anywhere

Twitter has the ease of access - you can start a converastion with anyone, but it's just you two in general, you're making interstng shapes with water in a river.

Tumblr's okay for conversations but no way to really get into it - if people don't follow you then no-one's ever listening. Also watery in its own way - no way to find out that thing that someone was saying about Prometheus unless you remember who.

twitter has an ease of perceived conversation where you can tweet at people you don't know and maybe they respond, whatever, because they don't have to buy into the conversation

on ilx, if you click on a post, you are ~in the conversation~

re: the politics thread

post-gabbeb (RIP) and tombot/dandy don weiner there's a bit of a more limited range of viewpoints, primarily aligned along the lefty nihilist axis (Morbz) and lefty "pragmatist" axis (most other people). This polarization/isolation is largely reflective of political realities in the US.

that being said I don't really go to the politics thread for an exchange of viewpoints, I treat it more like a news stream.
