I'm only 23! I think I came across ilx a couple of times through googling; I think I joined as a result of the ICP "Miracles" poetry thread. xps

sort of a false binary tho no

i dunno, not really. i've never interacted regularly with people for this long and still have no idea what they look like, sound like, smell like, etc. it has made me think a lot about the concept of integration/integrity, tbh.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say the first crop of ILX posters very consciously developed writing styles that amounted to these genuinely unmistakable posting 'voices' (in varying degrees of contrivance) and you don't see that as much these days, partly due to posts getting shorter but also due to several people defaulting to particular prevalent posting styles. See also these innocuous posters who suddenly discover old Ethan P posts and start affecting this kind of obviously put on brattishness.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like there are more boring posters now than there used to be but maybe i have just become more boring

max, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

it's true, LL smelled me when we met, these things are important

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

let's turn this into a discernible posting style thread

Mordy, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

Iirc a huge part if the total poster drop is the astonishing number of people we lost on the long ilx outage a while back. Also the current system culls users that haven't posted in the last six months, which is a huge factor in total regs vs the old system.

how do you request a new board anyway

Sweet Yin Yang ☯ (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

I vote we give Latham Green a board

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

Do you have a list of users who we've culled, no reason, just a laugh.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

there was a thread years and years ago where we posted in each other's styles and you had to guess who we were being. it got very confusing though.

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

actually I was wanting an "I Love Science" board - I wonder if ILX has enough scientists to make it vibrant and flamboyant

Sweet Yin Yang ☯ (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

caek!

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

you guys are making a pretty good case for the whole nu-boring ilx.

i re-read this p recently. it's mostly funny & stayed light-hearted. biggest gag is posting 5 dense paragraphs every time nabs pops up

johnny crunch, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

I'm more freaked out by the other Megan Fox she has growing out of the side of her head.

Sweet Yin Yang ☯ (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

that would be I LOVE CRICKET: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

I pretty much went away for what feels like three or four years, and recently came back. Had been an on-and-off poster since '03 probably. I'm just glad ilx is still going, still has some of its long-standing regulars, and still recognizably the place I left. I've been dealing with mortality and loss of late, so to find that a place like this endures is a pleasure I don't take for granted.

collardio gelatinous, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

(500) Days of Sodom (Merdeyeux), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

ha yr prob right but I feel like there are some Ilx stalwarts who were whipped into shape via constant hazing, tho part of it is prob people started to feel affection toward them via having abused them so much

― lag∞n, Friday, August 10, 2012 9:43 AM (55 minutes ago)

I hate the truth of this. Hazing to toughen someone up and hazing as a requirement to club membership are just gross and inhuman to me. (sorry for earnest, double sorry that I've committed this sin myself)

Your sweet bippy is going to hell (WmC), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

There should/have be/been a board for people who like to go out to dance clubs called "I love to boogie"

Mark G, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

welcome home collardio gelatinous!

Sweet Yin Yang ☯ (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

Hah while we're constructing a Danny Boyle style panorama of history, I remember the outcry when someone (Jess?) first described someone as not having been bullied enough in earlier life.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

Thank you Sweet Yin Yang!! xp

Iirc a huge part if the total poster drop is the astonishing number of people we lost on the long ilx outage a while back.

yeah I have heard from a couple regulars who I talk to off-board that they took the outage as a good opportunity to quit

dmr, Friday, 10 August 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

ex-regulars I shd say

dmr, Friday, 10 August 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder if the smaller amount of new posters reflects people beginning to see message boards as relics. I mean why read a long thread where a bunch of freelancers argue about Odd Future when you can just tweet at Tyler the Creator?

― Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Friday, August 10, 2012 7:34 AM (54 minutes ago)

what always surprises me is when a new poster turns up and within months seems to know all the memes, jargon, flames, poster idiosyncrasies and general ilx history etc... I've been here 11 years and my ilxor.xls is woefully undermanaged

― sorry for asshole (dog latin), Friday, August 10, 2012 7:39 AM (50 minutes ago)

i have the sense that ILX isn't at all welcoming to newcomers. there's not much tolerance for what constitutes "typical conversation" elsewhere on the internet, and though music is interesting to a lot of people, ILM doesn't exactly give off an enthused and excited vibe.

one of the best things about ILX is that it's actively self-policing, which keeps the level of conversation pretty high, minimizes redundancy and ugliness, but is definitely a two-edged sword. if any given conversation can only take place once, and posters are obliged to know the local history before entering one, then perhaps an end-game stage is eventually reached where all the basic, ground-level things have been said, and there's little room left for the sorts of music-related thoughts most new posters would have.

the other day, i was looking at the sound opinions board, and found a rather dispiriting conversation called "when did punk music start?" i say "dispiriting" because, though it was brand new (started only a few days ago), it tediously rehashed all the tired old punk-related ideas and debates that have been circulating for the last 30-some years, but there's also something refreshing about that kind of naivete. it permits engagement, and the result doesn't necessarily have to be as dumb as that particular SOMB thread. the fact that you just can't have those kinds of conversations on ILM/ILX probably pushes most prospective new posters away, for better and for worse.

contenderizer, Friday, 10 August 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

as I've explained to friends, the "IL" part of the boards is straight-up sarcasm and it's actually called "I hate music"

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

I would also like to say that I feel there's always a space for earnest music talk, British or otherwise, and being able to be yourself in your own space is a very important thing. If anyone felt that was threatened in the bad old days, I did not mean to endorse that. Only that engaging in the common areas, and expecting no boundaries to be challenged, is misguided.

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

if ilx is so dedicated to not repeating old conversations, how come the politics threads keep retreading the same dialectics?

Mordy, Friday, 10 August 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

politics is cyclical

But really, I seldom post personal thoughts on very many records but I don't know that I'd do so elsewhere. I appreciate reading thoughts on records.

i think you'll find that political discussion pre- and through 08 was a bit different. people are much less explanatory and verbose now. maybe up through the passing of the health care act, for the americans.

though it's hard to dissociate that shift in ilx discourse from general irl liberal fatigue

though what shakey said, too. people don't change their minds really.

goole, Friday, 10 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

it kinda sucks now
