Longtime ILXors - how has this board changed over time?

I think a lot of the people who had a problem with Noize actually had a problem with Jon. The 'call out poster x' threads were lame but a lot of it was just anarchic goofing around and looks pretty tame in retrospect. By the time of Ask Chaki etc that had solidified into this culture of disgruntled perma-sniping but a lot of that is gone now.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 12:06 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I know it's not perfect now etc etc but it feels stable in a way it didn't a few years ago.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

it's a little too stable, i don't feel people interact with new people anymore or it's not a vehicle for that. i mean it's nbd, lots of friends here, but everything is indeed pretty sectioned off.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think there are that many new people really. I suppose I've been thinking the opposite but maybe that's because there have been a load of catch-all threads for massive events that are attracting a really wide pool of posters - cf Olympics thread.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

How many new people do we get though? The only person in a long time who jumps to mind is Vic Perry, who hasn't posted in like a week or so...

xp

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't silby just admit to being here about two years? Seems like newer people can still integrate.

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah maybe no new people. that's pretty shit imo, why is it the case?

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:35 (thirteen years ago)

basically ilx will end when we all die

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:36 (thirteen years ago)

There are several new regs per day, but it doesn't translate into many new regular posters. Actually, I've seen more new names lately -- about half of them brand new, and the other half people who registered months ago and apparently lurked and read for a while before starting to post.

Your sweet bippy is going to hell (WmC), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:36 (thirteen years ago)

what is our lurker/poster ratio?

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

Alternatively maybe there are loads of new posters but they tend to slip in fairly quietly and largely unnoticed and then suddenly it seems like they've been around for ages.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

it doesn't feel that way to me, surely we should foster growth? i suggest a recruitment drive.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

We don't have an admin tool to see how many people have posted over the last X days (which would be very handy, now that I think of it -- I'm sure Stet has such numbers at his fingertips), but we have 2388 registered users and god knows how many unregistered lurkers, so, uh, I don't know.

xp Matt OTM. I just noticed a new name, looked up the info and saw they'd registered 2 years ago and had 90 posts. Stealth!

Your sweet bippy is going to hell (WmC), Friday, 10 August 2012 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

we need a 'valuable new posters' equivalent for when that happens

thomp, Friday, 10 August 2012 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

hi
been here since 2005
i mentioned this before upthread and the only person who noticed was mark e, who has met me in person

i think there are a lot of ilx wallflowers. a peep here and there, but mostly observing and not dominating any particular conversation.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

i'd have definitely guessed you'd been here since at least 05

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

re: new posters, did the switch to reg-only as a spam fighting move also end up walling off the more... impulsive, shall we say, strain of visitor we used to get?

lol, maybe we should integrate with Facebook authentication

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

the only thing it killed off was the Teadrinkers board I think.

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

ILX: What year did you start posting?

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

So yeah, if that poll is to be judged as a representative sample there's been a real falling off in recent years.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 August 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

I keep forgetting how long I've been around but my first post was in December 2003, and I think I lurked for a few months before that

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

lol I searched that thread and the second post I made on it is "did reg-only slow down the addition of new posters?"

so I guess I'll be having this conversation again next summer

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

One thing that's changed is the display names.

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

Lots more security, you know? I feel like I'm having a staring contest with a anonymous username but I won't back down

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

in October I'll have been posting for 10 years. in December I'll turn 25. someone please shoot me in the face.

Gurdas Mane (crüt), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

But then you won't be able to post about the worst part of getting old.

Your sweet bippy is going to hell (WmC), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

baby crut <3 I shoot you with love

Whoa crut you young

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

as a pack of wolves would a human baby, this board has raised a crut

johnny crunch, Friday, 10 August 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

I remember crut being younger seven years ago

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

hwere the hell is Buff and Max's mom on this thread? finding mason bees homes?

The Cheerfull Turtle (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

buffandmaxsmom is actually a crut sock

kanye shiwen (dayo), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

we need to alter the numbers of new ilxors being born, artificially or organically. our community is in grave danger.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

that reminds me, all boards need more Banaka

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

the fact that "Poll: What's the worst part about getting old?" is doubling in size every day seems like a new development

frogbs, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

anyone who claims not to be shocked by these terrifying new figures is a bare-faced liar

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

ilx is perpetually in the gutter

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

I see a strong future for ILX implants in the cerebellum and ampule of vater

Sweet Organic Princess (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

imho its good theres less overtly anti social behavior and people just being blatently unkind on ilx, but it has the consequence of there just being a shit ton of really boring people who post to every thread and say absolutely nothing who wouldve been intimidated into putting a lil more effort in or driven off in days of yore

lag∞n, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

an under studied and essentail to understanding the transistion from zing to cuddlestien ilx era is imho mod wars/board lawyers, which was m/l tombot behaving antisocially in defense of the status quo where noise/zing was antisocial/revolutionary, both sides were decimated rip

lag∞n, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the post-flameout era was full of people trying to constantly go over the top to see if they could accumulate SB points, flanked by people who loved to SB for comedy purposes

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

as internet communities increase in size and age, the probability of any member x finding any member y boring approaches that of the real world

thomp, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

there used to be standards man standards

lag∞n, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

Sorry we bored your thread, mister.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

ilx used to be a place where you could be yourself, without derision, even if you were a self-clowning oven

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

i apologise for being boring and nobody noticing me for years and years until the metal polls.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

btw I was thinking of this last night and my brain crossed it with that Bjork SNL sketch and I kept wandering around saying "I throw neeckels in the self-clowning offfven and it is mooosick!"

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 10 August 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

i don't really find contemporary ilx to be "cuddlestien" except maybe in comparison to previous eras. still plenty of bitterness and fighting to be found throughout the site

Mordy, Friday, 10 August 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

We were never being boring - we had too much time for synthesizors

ILX has certainly opened its mind _ I remember when you couldn't even make the little "tescicles" sign <3
