I wasn't here at all, then I was here a lot, then I was here too much, now I'm hardly here at all.

I guess the main way ILX has changed is that most of the good posters are gone or post infrequently

many of the people i loved most are gone. (so are some assholes, of course.) many good people remain. the vast bulk of posters are giant blanks to me, but i guess that's no different than it was 12 years ago.
― big-mammed punisher (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:06 (thirteen years ago)
The worst thing of all I think is how many regular ILXors have actually passed away.
(unless thats what h4a was in part referring to)
― Pureed Moods (Trayce), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:09 (thirteen years ago)
Like I can think of 3, immediately, but there must be more?
― Pureed Moods (Trayce), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:10 (thirteen years ago)
i have a feeling ade was more referring to the people who have actually gotten their shit together and found contentment away from black text on a white background
― big-mammed punisher (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)
beacons to as all, each and every one of them

when I got here it seemed like ILM/ILE cultivated a lot of MFA types and there was more of the sinister/alt.music.alt diaspora going on. the brits, the gays and the party drug people were all interspersed and ad hominems seemed reserved for truly worthwhile targets like Momus and some other asshole whose name I can't remember. There was Graham, and Andrew, and the code was shit and didn't scale, and I was in the military and then I was in grad school and then I was married.
Now I'm married again, and a dad, and I'm in the government, and it just all seems a little smaller and quieter, and people still get nasty but now it's nastiness among peers because we banned all the champion trolls and the diaspora has reverted to ghetto threads and there's too many boards for me to keep up on the best and brightest - site new answers (ex audience-specified running threads e.g. gay, city, parents, photogs) seems to boil down to POLITICS SPORTS POLITICS WEATHER TELEVISION CONSUMER-PRODUCT POLITICS - I miss some things about the old days. but not much. I'm not one for nostalgia, surprise.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)
i'd just like to point out that i'm one of the rare success stories in off-board life that still deigns to post here with any regularity. you're welcome.
― dell (del), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:17 (thirteen years ago)
Well ya that too. Which will never happen for me, thanks to my job I'm stuck in front of the damn thing all day regardless ... no release... no escape ;_;
― Pureed Moods (Trayce), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:17 (thirteen years ago)
jess I read you loud and clear but it wasn't like the rockstars from 2002 were ever going to last long before rehab or adulthood took them to a better place. I blame the strokes.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:20 (thirteen years ago)
hey, i mean i'm still here too. i'm not exempting myself or anything.
― big-mammed punisher (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)
dell you're at best a mediocre excuse for a regular poster and you always have been. Your post just now is like the 91 IQ bureaucrat who rolls up in the all-hands meeting for the perfect attendance award. The DMV appreciates your consistency in being there every day to help hundreds of people discover what the opposite of help is.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)
well, thanks tombot. i've been looking all my life for that kind of recognition! ;D

We need everything we got, everyone on deck. The googlers are not going to back down. This is not an exercise. This is the life or death moment for the entire human race. We need every man, woman and dwarf on this ship to suck it up and post big, post hard, get that thought provoking shit out there on the web like there was no tomorrow. Not for yourselves, not on some personal tumblr, twitter, facebook bullshit - for the sake of the conversation, right out there on the ILX. That's where we win this war. That's where we save the earth, and the human race. That's where we prove it to the world that we deserve to be President. That's how we're gonna make the dreams happen. That's what it's gonna take to make it a better place for our children. That's why we get up in the morning. That's when it all comes together.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)
so basically we need momus. that's what i've been saying all along!
― dell (del), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)
Man I started posting here over two years ago now. How many years until I am a longtime ilxor?
― "Pffft" --buddha (silby), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)
xpost noooooo. no.

never, silby

― big-mammed punisher (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:46 (thirteen years ago)
Judith, you always bring value! Also where necessary the hammer, down.
But I do have a sense that ILX has a diversity that wasn't there before. You'd have a hard time posting about anything that wouldn't at least get a few intelligent responses.
I can't agree man, one of the things that was always great about ILX was that it was like a friendly Wikipedia*, if you had a question it had the answer, if there were two answers you'd hear both.
* this was effectively pre-Wikipedia, so the analogy I used at the time was Robin Williams' disembodied head in A.I.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:48 (thirteen years ago)
they know better than to stray over here after that one sanford-townsend band thread that blew up. ouch!
― dell (del), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:49 (thirteen years ago)
a timely momus cameo would really shake the place up
― WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:51 (thirteen years ago)
The biggest difference is the role of ILM. Seems like 2003-ish, you came for ILM and then filtered out to the rest of ILX. By 2007, ILE was the important sibling and ILM was just one more hobby to talk about. But maybe ILM is just a blind spot for me. I can't keep up with the speed of new releases (esp. hip-hop) or sorting out everything that's available with one click so I've mostly quit trying.
Also different: I haven't seen Momus's cock in years.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 10 August 2012 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

Back when he blamed SB for Bimble's suicide, he said he still lived a daily-ILX lifestyle, he'd just managed to quit posting.
― ʘ (sic), Friday, 10 August 2012 06:08 (thirteen years ago)
I've never posted very frequently, but reading ILX has been a really important part of my life. I feel like I'd be really culturally naive if I hadn't found this place. Noise board anarchy was my favorite period, when there was tons of stuff like this: http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=60&threadid=2955 , which used to autoplay Hystereo's "Gonna Love You" but now doesn't :(
The suggest-ban era, when a few voices got really self-righteous imo, was a low point. It was a big mistake to let users ban people for being brash or having unpopular opinions, or really any reason at all. The mods just shouldn't have delegated that function. Everything's cool now, I think largely due simply to the "suggest ban" button being re-named "flag post", as people have noted before.
― Dan I., Friday, 10 August 2012 07:01 (thirteen years ago)
It still boggles me that anybody could get to 51 'ban' votes without being just an incredibly egregious shithead, but I only ever SB'ed one, maybe two people, as opposed to merely saying "SB so-and-so."
