his interaction with ppl that is
see someone revived that beth parker thread and i was just thinking of her and how i have almost no contact with her at all anymore. she never even posts anything on facebook. and we saw her all the time when we lived on the vineyard and she's one of maria's best friends from there. we kinda got her hooked on ilx. maybe she hasn't forgiven us.
― scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)
i never had anything to do with dom either. i never understood his controversial status. just never went on threads he was on. they were all like britpop or melody maker threads, i guess? i have no idea.
― scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:27 (thirteen years ago)
someone 'explained' dom to me the other day, i didn't quite know who he was, i think in 30 years it will be like when tales were told of legendary highwaymen & poachers who lived in a simpler time, whose mythic status we still puzzle over, intersect with
― , Blogger (schlump), Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)
beth parker seemed like a good neighbor, she started that classic post-pictures-of-art-on-yr-walls thread. OTOH remember ann sterzinger?
maybe I am sexist. but susan douglas was one of my all-time faves, even if she was a momus sockpuppie
― (REAL NAME) (m coleman), Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)
god, ann. wow. she was a reg on i love books for a while. she was something...
― scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)
There was a very brief period when a handful of Chicago Reader staffers -- Ann, Br1an Nemtus@k, and M@rtha B@yne -- were posting semiregularly. I can't quite remember what prompted it, though I think it might have to do with the fact that Kenan was buddies with ex-Reader writer Neal Pollack.
― Trewster Dare (jaymc), Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)
so i can blame kenan for ann? haha! just kidding. kinda. we lost an ann but we gained an excellent james morrison.
― scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)
the board i now get the most pleasure from reading is, ironically, i love books.

It just occurred to me we probably need an ilx wiki or at least glossary
― The Cheerfull Turtle (Latham Green), Friday, 10 August 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)
I wonder how much of this is just down to raw numbers of posters but I have no idea, really, how many active users there are now versus three years ago, five years ago, seven years ago...is there any kind of database that would give a sense of that?
i kept track for a while. i know, i know. before our last sandbox sidetrip we had over 3,000 registered users. today it's 2,386.
it has felt to me like a smaller but still busy community these past few years.

The point of a wiki is that we all write it...

I didn't really interact with him, but reading him in some threads he struck me as a kind of redneck cop trying to nightstick people into not discussing or liking hip hop he found distasteful. Fuck the police.

I guess the main way ILX has changed is that most of the good posters are gone or post infrequently

Sorry, let me put that more diplomatically... many cherished posters are no longer with us

I thought he was really annoying when he was still here, but when I come across his posts, he doesn't seem that bad. He got sbanned for something REALLY stupid, like an image bomb iirc, and just never came back. Meanwhile we've had dudes get sbanned 3 or 4 times and they rise up posting again like it was nothing.
One thing, was ethan black or white or what? He was definitely one of those dudes who pointed out racism regularly (oh, if he were here now to see the IS IT RACIST thread), and I got the impression he was coming to it from a personal perspective. But a while ago someone said something that gave me the impression that he was white. And also, he never posted in the wdylls. Fuck, who was that? Anyway, someone here has met him, I'm sure?

― mookieproof, Friday, 10 August 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)
Oh fuck, he worked in a puppet theater or something too, didn't he? I'm still foggy on a lot of things about ilx from my early days of posting.
― spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)
at the very least this thread has taught me that 'doctor casino' is not greying britishes rocker 'dr. c', who seemed a good chap.

i joined ilx during the peak of the nasty years, snuck in a few days after l0u1s jagg3r and as a consequence nobody noticed at all pretty much. posted so intermittently on threads that nobody cared about for such a long time about my startling insights regarding animal collective albums. it wasn't until the gay threads started properly rolling that i became a "regular poster" but sadly a lot of the earliest staples of those threads have disappeared (casuistry: my most missed poster, who i hung out with in toronto a couple years ago and who was pretty much exactly as i expected) or who i don't get to interact with as much with as i used to (surmounter, who i never see anymore now that everything that it is currently possible to say about the album blackout by britney spears has been said) and also the gay thread itself suddenly domesticated and is now about gays in their married bliss, though again this is super cute but i don't really have anything to add on the topic. its harder lately for me need to post and i've been pretty much just lurking intermittently recently. ilx is time consuming and this has always been a major problem. the need to be involved in this or that rolling discussion. my most positive recent experience was the paul simon poll, the antagonism between the simon solo evangelists and the s&g orthodox believers was genuinely hilarious to me. i think that what is good about the always burgeoning poster base is that it still allows these strangely sequestered private conversations. a couple of years ago i had a long discussion with lamp about chillwave that let us post like one hundred youtube videos and hit submit on whatever badly digested derridean stoned logic entered our heads and all the bad vibes festered elsewhere on the post-anco thread. i feel like the coalescence of a mainstream hivemind is always in flux and im not in touch enough right now to know where that is at the moment. i think that a lot of the best posters still post pretty regularly, surm, stevie d, harbl, ice cream, horseshoe, max, enbb, morbius, i mean this is definitely not a complete list. it feels like the tribal rolling threads have dissipated somewhat maybe idk. it also feels like there's been a shift away from the internetspeak linqua franca that i got used to. for me those fashions have been mainly how i keep track of the eras (the abbrevs era vs the EVAH era). best beloved tuppence. why because she look intrsting. itt two princes. can i just

judith that was a great post. :-)
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I enjoyed that too. Agreed that the Simon poll result thread was really great, and also symbolizes one major thing I come to this board for, that you really don't find as much elsewhere on the internet, which is just great little anecdotes of how people came to love a certain song or where it was at a certain time in their life and all this kind of stuff, it's a really positive kind of sharing IMO. And the S&G/solo battling struck me as a pretty friendly rivalry, without any kind of death threats or "clearly you must be a racist" kind of stuff.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)
the gay thread itself suddenly domesticated and is now about gays in their married bliss, though again this is super cute but i don't really have anything to add on the topic
The gay thread is often indistinguishable from the film ones, and both kinds boast more than their share of heartless single queens like me.

yeah but you all have a different way in to and involvement with film to me and the way film is discussed on ilx has always been the one weirdly alienating thing for me. that said donna rouge told me i might like harun farocki once and since then i've seen about 75% of all the farocki films that exist.
― judith, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:29 (thirteen years ago)
which takes a bit of effort.
donna rouge and sarahel are probably the two biggest omissions from that list of my favourite posters
― judith, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)
Post at your leisure, judith -- please! I for one miss your posts.

the quality of discourse has definitely dropped from the "are the Smiths the best band ever and do you want a curlywurly milkshake?" era
― Shrimpface Killah (Noodle Vague), Friday, 10 August 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)
My early favorite posters were Josh and Badgerminor.
― Jeff, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:35 (thirteen years ago)
2002 to like 2005 were pretty rough, and i know i was part of that cuz lol twentysomething with a unresolved anger issues and taking the internet too seriously. i'm a lot mellower now, and (conveniently) i think the rest of ilx is too, or at least the trolls are easier for me to ignore.
i always liked noise borad (i never posted there a lot but they were always nice to me and some of my favorite posters are noise hall-of-famers) although i dislike the zing aesthetic.
― hamlisch kilgour (get bent), Friday, 10 August 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)
one funny thing when i started posting on ilm is how pop-evangelist everyone was, and i was all "stop thumping that bible at me! i may be new here but i'm right there with you." i've loved pop forever and i don't have some staunch indie past to live down. even if i like pavement.
― hamlisch kilgour (get bent), Friday, 10 August 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)
yeah that's true. hadn't thought of it that way. i'm no born again either. loved it all from day one. never had no pop or indie guilt. so no need to justify my life. its kinda fun to watch other people get hot and bothered about it though.
― scott seward, Friday, 10 August 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)
does tom ewing cringe when he looks at ilm now? now that it's an unofficial grateful dead fan forum.
