set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

a pioneer of the worst thing to happen to ilx
xp

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

this thread is being derailed by mookie's stories about meeting noizers in prison and scott's erotic video persona

dell (del), Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

me and gareth and estela are not exactly bro-down dudes i guess is what i'm saying? but yes i did get noisy back then. probably depended on how miserable i was that month.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

estela enjoys mirth in all its forms

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

ive never thought of gareth as a bro

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

the impenetrability of the "best animal friends", "lol tubmlr", and "VAPEZILLA!" threads is really keeping the drawbridge down, not sure how anyone would understand that board

it was easy if you didn't try to understand though. i wasn't a noize dude though. but it was fun i thought (mostly) but sometime mean i guess.

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

i started posting here in 2006 after reading for a few months. the culture was both intimidating and appealing. i loved the remnants of the long-form serious discussion era that remained at that point, nabisco was still posting a lot and quite a few other regulars were willing to converse seriously and at length. on the other hand, it was the height of the dom & ethan era, so there was a lot of bullying and loutish aggression. like del says, that waved seemed to crest a year or two later, and ILX has been a much friendlier and calmer place since then.

it seems to me that the board has collectively adopted a controversy-averse stance over the last five years or so, perhaps in response to the ugliness of that more savage age. both a good and a bad thing, imo.

contenderizer, Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

still quite a bit of bullying going on

DX Dx DX (dan m), Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah

contenderizer, Thursday, 9 August 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

The fact that it's "dude"-ish and was carried to ridiculous extremes was part of the actually very layered joke, it was largely a performance but sometimes in some ways NOT a performance, etc etc. But it got kind of up its own ass after a while with the layers and for people who were being lazy or not as smart as the others, it was easier to just actually BE sexist or bigoted.

this seems otm, Laurel you were a voice of reason/maturity on NB

idk charges of sexism or bigotry get tossed around so casually they become meaningless. I've been accused of being racist by posters I respect because I've read and liked books by certain authors or expressed disdain for certain rappers. who cares? yet it's hard to laugh off. I grew up in a time and place where prejudice against blacks was pretty much the norm and have made some effort over the years not to live that way or pass it along. so these charges hurt. yes you can get your feelings hurt on ILX. and I've been a jerk to some people here in the name of "humor" hopefully not any more. But if nothing else I - we - have learned something about human interaction while posting and I'd like to think some of the ugliest trainwreck banning situations or clusterfux result in self-examination and dare I say it a more mature attitude among our little community...

dmr, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

the parts of the nouisse board i enjoyed were more eco-hippy than ny brodown although the two did intersect. milton parker, scott seward, gott II, rrrobyn, am0n, jon lewis iirc? etc. on like the leonardo threads. then there was the west coast contingent. and chaki, the lone ranger. the "core" group seemed to model itself on the dudes in lightning bolt or something. heavy sideplots involving a butthurt hstencil. inscrutable relationship drama. amusing appearances by hipster strawman spencer chow. *sighs*

turtwig greenturty (Matt P), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

the board is too big now for these discussions.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it was/is pretty easy to dwell in the cosmic-noise contingent and ignore a lot of other stuff that goes on
but the same could be said for all of ilx really

for some reason i still love when that steve aoki thread i started gets revived. i don't know why. most of the best aoki pictures are gone from the thread. r.i.p. aoki jpegs.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

i think its always been pretty easy for me to ignore the stuff on ilx that i don't care about/think is dumb.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

i'm learning

turtwig greenturty (Matt P), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

i seriously still remember the day scott realized that he didn't need a scanner and could just take pictures of pictures and make threads out of them.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

I love that post like your mom thread

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

@ rrrrrrrrrrobyn : i dont feel bad.

just locked out of a secret world.

however, now i have had a skinny peek, i suspect it would in the end bore the f*ck out of me.

mark e, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

I've been here since 2005 and have mostly been ghettoized in my own little ilx world, but it has been such a long time that i feel more or less comfortable here if not only because i've just been hanging out in the corner watching people for 7 years.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

all my snark about british football jokes is because i feel locked out of a secret world iirc xp

turtwig greenturty (Matt P), Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)
