Ha, I was actually thinking about how ILX would respond to this show and who would bring up "icky racial stuff" along those lines. The thing is, though, when they sing r&b it doesn't seem to be at all about black r&b -- if those songs belonged to anyone today, it seems like it'd be like John Mayer or James Blunt or something. Always feels like they're just going for "sensitive" pop music, and it's a whole other issue that super-popular music just happens to consist of white people already working in a black idiom.

That said, I do find them significantly less funny when they do rap or dancehall, though I think that's just a structural thing.

My favorite joke in all of these so far, apart from the ending shot joke of the mugging one, is the bit in the "I'm Not Crying" song where he's making a lasagna ... for one.

Definitely, this makes sense. And I like that we don't hear them actually performing, so they could very well be a lousy live band who have these fantasies of what their songs would sound like given some solid-gold production.

I thought the marketing made this look terrible, but I caught about 2/3 of the sign board episode (including the "She's So Hot Boom" song) and it was pretty good.

They're kind of taking the "Dick in a Box" idea -- catchy songs, not just funny as parody but well written and believably but ridiculously emo -- more than the Midnite Vultures idea.

Though the more Tenacious D embellished their folk comedy act, the further they got from their one joke. Embellishments give the Conchords a chance to think one up.

i don't know; i stayed at their place for 3 months and never saw him. but apparently he's a pretty laid-back dude. the house has a big section (by wellington standards) and they all wanted to jazz it up and have a vege garden and stuff, so he gave them a pile of cash to do whatever they wanted to the place.

I love them. The pet shop boys thing was amazing. Also, I'm a little bit in love with Bret.
