I'm going next week. For work.

How should I spend my evenings. Where can I eat nice cheap food and drink?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Ed, I'd love to help, just email me. That's my real address there.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Eerikinkatu

Corcoran (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

That's not as cool as it used to be... They've closed down Mother, Saunabar (this one only temporarily), and Leopold (which used to be my regular pub). There's still Moskva and Corona though, plus a couple of new spots.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

:(

out of touch.

Corcoran (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I'm back there next week, Tuomas, can you recommend some restaurants? I ended up eating in the hotel last time and it was pretty awful.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

my new favorite website about helsinki:

Hel-Looks

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I love that site too. It makes me want to spend more time with my sewing machine, that's for sure.
I want to be friends with this couple (and I even have a coat similar to hers!):

And this is just cute - I think the purse is key:

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Where do I find all of these super cute people/clothes?

Ed (dali), Friday, 20 January 2006 06:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda out of the loop on the restaurant scene, since I can't afford to eat out that often. Also, since I've been a vegetarian for the last 9 years, I only know places that serve decent veggie food. I guess I could recommend a couple of those. If you want to meet up or something, you can e-mail me at tuomas dot alho at helsinki dot com. I'm sorry I didn't answer last time, I got your mail a bit too late. What day are you coming here?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 20 January 2006 07:56 (twenty years ago)

An OK cupid match gave me some restaurant ideas. I'll call you after work.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 06:52 (twenty years ago)

You going on a date? :)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

that should have said 'some more restaurnat ideas'. No, no such luck But some of my top matches are Finning so I thought it would be worth a try.

There's quite a wind chill this morning. I hope this doesn't make walking around later unpleasant or undooable.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:24 (twenty years ago)

A conversational theme seems to be, 'Good job you weren't here on Sunday, it was -22'

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:26 (twenty years ago)

What's her (his?) username? ;)

Haha, be glad you didn't come here last week, we had minus 20 degrees Celsius then. This is mild.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Haha, yeah, complaining about the weather is a favourite Finnish pastime. It's never good.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I know her! Very well actually. I think she's spoken for these days or something though. Did you ask to meet her?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:36 (twenty years ago)

no, I would have felt very sleazy aksing a girl out whilst passing through on a business trip.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:38 (twenty years ago)

I haven't spoken with her for a while, but if you want to go out tomorrow evening, I guess I could ask if she'd up for a pint or something.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:42 (twenty years ago)

"she'd be"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:43 (twenty years ago)

OK

Definately up for tomorrow evening. The more the merrier I say.

Now if only I had clicked on the comment maker's linka at the bottom of the profile, everything would have become clear.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:44 (twenty years ago)

i long to go to Tapettitalo, the worlds best wallpaper store.

Will you be back by my housewarming, Ed? (29th January)

You still haven't given me mine peppermint crisps!

Trying To Resonate Concrete (kate), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

That second girl Robyn linked to: I think Dalmatians would suit me

Is she Cruella de Vil?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Kate. (I will be in between trips).

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Come to my housewarming, then! Peppermint Crisps will be a perfect way to add a South African flavour to Burns Night/Chinese New Year for mine own particular heritage.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

And south african pink wine.

Pretty!

I want to paint mine new flat that colour, but I think it would be quite difficult to say "I want to paint my house the colour of a Finnish sunset...."

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

It's having a new camera and one that I actually like using.

I would like to have Helsinki city council for having a design of park waste bin that allows me to use a mini tripod on top of them.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Awww, trams! How lovely!

Also, this looks like what we were describing, as the fantasy of Cross Country Skiing:

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 10:30 (twenty years ago)

I was in Helsinki for a couple of days over the summer with lovely weather and enjoyed it very much - tho beware the hidden threat of liquorice flavoured ice cream!! it looks like chocolate on the illustrated board by the ice cream kiosk!

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Oy! Finns have got me drunk and I have to be up in a very few hours .

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 January 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I hope you managed to make it to your flight in one piece, Ed. I at least felt awfully hungover this morning, I had a massive headache. I guess our pub tour took a bit longer than I expected. But I had fun, hope you enjoyed it too. Now, if only I can survive this day...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I made my flight. I too have a stinking hangover. I curse you all. I curse jenni especially for introducing me to that vile salty liquorice drink.

Seriously lovely evening. I can't think of a better way it could have gone. Borscht, shouty drunk russians, pub quiz, charlie parker on the jukebox. Thanks to you all.

Further photos in my flickr.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

The salty liqourice stuff is something every true Finn is supposed to love, but I hate it! I guess I'm a fake or something.

Until I saw that photo I'd totally forgotten we actually danced in that bloody ten square meter pub! I must've been rather pissed by then.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Ed, you have found your Finnish manesake!

I am very jealous, it looks like you had so much fun. Are Tuomas and all his friends as cute in person as they look in photos?

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

"Manesake"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

manesake = person with the same hair (mane)!

Like namesake = person with the same name

Looks like one of your friends has long, blond dreadlocks in the photo above (though in the other photos, his hair is not as long as Ed's, but still.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was saying to Ed before we met him that I know one other engineer with dreadlocks, and we're going to see him soon. Or an engineer student, to be true, He also studies philosophy, he was reading aloud stuff by of some Ancient Greek philosopher.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Isn't mane what horses have? Or can a person have it too?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Lions have manes, horses have manes, people with long hair have manes. (I think it means more person with long, flowing hair that is *like* the mane of an animal, but it can mean human hair.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Yes they are all very cute in person.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

ed used to literally have a long blond mane, before it got twisted. he looked like a lion. i would show evidence if i had any to hand.

Anyone passing through Helsinki between now and august this year should take a look at ARS06 at the Kiasma art gallery. SO much great stuff and so little time to see it. I don't think I've been to a group show with so many works I've liked.

Particularly good were AES-F's huge digital painting called 'The Last Riot'. Hyper sexualised teens fighting each other with samurai swords and big pink Missiles; Charles Sandision's big text projections, letters and words coalesing into images etc.; Kalleinen and Kochta-Kalleinen's 'Complaints Choir of Birmingham'; Martin and Munoz's Snow Domes; Mariele Neudecker's wierd mountains in fish tanks; The crazy moving floor room by I forget whom. Loads of other great stuff as well. Looking forward to going back.

Ed (dali), Friday, 27 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Well, in Töölö you have this place, which is a combined restaurant/pub/gallery/music and theatre venue, it's well worth a visit:
http://www.korjaamo.fi/en

Also in Töölö is one of the famoust art galleries in the town:
http://taidehalli.fi/en

If you want to eat some "authentic" Finnish food, you should visit one of the street grills, they're very popular after the pubs close. This one is probably the most famous, and it's also in Töölö, near the Parliament House:
https://fi-fi.facebook.com/pages/Jaskan-Grilli/111680452244862

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:07 (eleven years ago)

Oh, and if you're here on April 30th/May 1st, there'll be loads of people on the streets. May 1st is a national holiday, and traditionally both students and left-wing parties celebrate the day, so there'll be some street rallies (probably not in Töölö though, it's a fairly bourgeoise area) and people having picnics while wearing their "student hats". (The hat is something you get once you graduate from the gymnasium, and a lot of older people wear it on May 1st too.) On both days there'll also be a lot of students on the streets drinking booze and wearing all sorts of coloured overalls. (Different schools each have their own type of overalls with their own colour.) It's basically the closest thing Finland has to a carneval.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:14 (eleven years ago)

Cool thanks! I'm leaving fairly late on the 30th.

Seems like on Sunday they have an afternoon techno/house music party at Ääniwalli, which is the hippest electronic music club in here at the moment:

seven months pass...

in this cold and dark place again

going to Lapland tomorrow, in January. brrrrrrrrrrrrr

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:55 (nine years ago)

Hey, it's pretty warm in here for mid-January! Won't disagree with you on Lapland, tho.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:02 (nine years ago)

It's as cold in Paris today as Helsinki, so yes. tomorrow up to Kilpisjärvi. a guy in Helsinki just told me that Kilpisjärvi is exotic, but in a very different way than how we normally think of exotic. I've never seen the auroras and I am happy to do so.

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:11 (nine years ago)

two years pass...

I am here and it is delightful.

jaymc, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 14:30 (six years ago)

What are you up to in Helsinki, are you staying here for long?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

Hi Tuomas!! I just got here last night and am here until Saturday morning. My wife and I went to Estonia for the national Song Festival and traveled around there for about a week, and now we are in Helsinki for a few days before we go back to Chicago. Today we went to Suomelinna and then wandered around the Design District for a bit. Before we leave, we're planning to go to a couple of museums and maybe a sauna. What are you up to? Wanna hang out? We're staying in Kallio.
