he really doesn't see that his role as a caring husband/provider is directly contradicted by his life as a meth cook, maybe because he has them so compartmentalized in his mind
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)
manchester new hampshire to Houston: 32 hrs
manchester to Albuquerque: 37 hrs
Walt estimated travel time: "about 30 hrs"
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)
he also loves the theater of telling a constructed monologue; he loves pretending to be the earnest, kind Walt that he once was.
yeah this is so otm
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)
he definitely loves the theater - i do wonder if he was ever earnest, though. even in the pilot episode, he's seething with discontent and bitterness
― Nhex, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)
have you ever met an actor?
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:10 (thirteen years ago)
I'm glad the show is giving Walt free rein to indulge his narcissistic injury and become the powerful gangster he's always wanted to be perceived as, if only to finally shoot a nail gun into the head of his marriage. (Surprised it's taken Sky this long to get to this point.) The most horrific thing about this ep for me isn't the conversation between them, it's the way he was studiously ignoring every sign of her distress, he's completely fine with her being distraught as long as she didn't complain or affect his plans.
― Brakhage, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)
And I'm sure being given Steve McQueen's watch isn't helping his relentless grandiosity ... but we know from the opening flash-forward of the season there is going to be hell to pay

who's running the car wash?
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, August 7, 2012 6:47 PM (Yesterday)
holly obv
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 05:34 (thirteen years ago)
I thought Marie was working in the car wash as well?
Walt's convinced that Skylar will come round to him and he's basing this largely on his relationship with Jesse and conveniently forgetting that his improved relationship with Jesse is 100% built on lies, deception and emotional manipulation.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:19 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think they want the perpetually interfering wife of their friendly local DEA agent working at their money laundering operation
― Number None, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:24 (thirteen years ago)
imo he knows well his relationship with jesse is based on lies - and he fully intends to do similar deeds to get sky back on board. he now sees himself as this arch manipulator as well as everything else.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:28 (thirteen years ago)
Interesting to think back and try to pinpoint the exact moment when Walt crossed the line.
― calstars, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:29 (thirteen years ago)
surviving the events of the end of s4 has definitely tipped him into some new madness.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)
First episode?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 12:41 (thirteen years ago)
over the last couple of days I've rewatched the first season with a friend watching for the first time ("it's maybe worrying how many of Walt's actions I find reasonable", yes, WE'LL SEE) and it's interesting to see that quietly seething side to him that we have less now - he has that boring family man thing that does seem pretty genuine to me, but there's also the discontentment and bitterness that he's clearly struggling to keep beneath the surface, and not always succeeding. Now I guess he thinks he has his various drives in perfect functional harmony, able to switch between masks when necessary, tho of course we all see that he's just a rite madman.

When Hank was all "Pool party!" I realized how much I've been missing the pre-minerals Hank, the guy who will try to bro up any hugely awkward moment to keep things light.

― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, whoa @ that ending.
that being said, i think these caper type episodes are the least compelling ones
― buh, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)
aw man, i disagreethis was straight primo

Tuco's office is still the best
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
xp i agree, was on the edge of my seat
have i mentioned how i like this season's much faster pacing? especially compared to the first half of S4
― Nhex, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)
― Nhex
seriously.. just tuned in to the last fifteen minutes. Wonder if TODD will be subject to WAINGRO-an consequences, like in heat. the repercussions will be interesting
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Monday, 13 August 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)
That was maybe the most oblique cold open they've had. Despite having zero idea how it was gonna fit into the larger narrative, the talk of the train heist hearkened back to the horn that sounded at the beginning of the episode and I just knew something dreadful was going to go down with that kid. Subtle and masterfully done.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)
they've been setting us up for 5 years, with those cold opens that were flash forwards so much farther in the future.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)
even though the caper episodes get me eventually and I get all adrenalized about 'em they are p eyeroll inducing. the ending is almost like a punishment - like, ok, you put up with the thing that would never have happened, here's the reality you think you want from the episode, innocent kid's dead, you happy now mr anti-caper-episode
― steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 13 August 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, it's the old hitchcock switcheroo of "well you wanted the bad guy to win, now deal with the ramifications"
― I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Monday, 13 August 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)
the chrysler 300 commercial narrator sounds like gruff bob odenkirk, pitched down a tad. i guess it's not him, but i keep hearin' it. Nice heat ref by Hank
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Monday, 13 August 2012 04:19 (thirteen years ago)
perfect ep, easily best of s5 so far
― Simon H., Monday, 13 August 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)
OK, not perfect - someone remind me why Skyler just doesn't go State's Witness and get a nice immunity deal?
