Here is another gem:

An NRO columnist is an expert in the minutiae of what may be the most degraded, pidgin, artless and counteraesthetic cultural product of all of Western Civilization's millenia of artistry.

God help us, Derbyshire was right. We Are Doomed.

" The theme of the National Socialist murderer's bands and music have sado-masochistic themes just as Fifty Shades of Grey does, not to mention a TV drama sponsored by Oprah Winfrey. .As commentators have noted, it can be argued that Page does not fit the charge of domestic terrorism, since it is hard to immediately discern any political objective."

Awesome, with headlines like that, Jonah really is turning into T Herman Zwiebel.

Also, I'm glad that the idea of "e.coli conservatism" has finally reached elected officials with mics.

Romney/Ryan: A Religious Milestone

By Michael Potemra

Four years ago, we Americans did something that not many decades earlier had been considered unthinkable, in electing an African-American to the presidency. That was a milestone, one that even those of us who voted for John McCain could, as I said that very night, take pride in. This year, a ticket with a Mormon and a Catholic on it could make it to the White House. The Mormons and Catholics who were targets of religious bigotry and violence back in the 19th century made a bet on America — that someday America would be truer to its founding principles of tolerance and liberty. They were right: It gets better.

This is the guy who's pilloried regularly for liking liberal books and movies.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 11 August 2012 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

looooool trying to appropriate "it gets better" is some super radioactive asshole behavior

The Corner's been an odd place the last few days. Euphoric but also...restrained? It's like they don't want their delight with the Ryan pick to squelch their suspicion that Romney will still lose.

KLEIN: Number one, she felt that if she were on the ticket with Obama and he lost, she would be tarred as a loser when she tried to run in 2016. On the other hand, if she was on the ticket and he won, and he continued his far, left-wing socialistic policies, she would have to defend those policies when she ran in 2016.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 17 August 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

how self-aware are these ppl? i mean there's obviously something to be said for trying to manipulate the media narrative in your direction by saying your opponent is reeling, etc. when cornerites do this is it gamesmanship or belief?

mookieproof, Friday, 17 August 2012 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

I think if you start going down that rabbit hole in order to answer that question you may not know what is up or down before long.

ryan, Friday, 17 August 2012 02:05 (thirteen years ago)

I think I said it on an earlier version of this thread but so much of modern conservatism in its contemporary media guise seems to call that whole distinction between belief and riling up liberals into question. It's almost an ideology that's implicitly or unconsciously knows how bankrupt it is.

ryan, Friday, 17 August 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

tbf, i don't think k-lo is faking anything

mookieproof, Friday, 17 August 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

Haha yes but she projects a weird anxiousness about it all rather than simple belief. It's all like the end of "Absalom, Absalom" for christ's sake.

ryan, Friday, 17 August 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

Her earnestness is downright painful.

how self-aware are these ppl?

classic example is when k-lo wrote "we should be on our knees" she meant praying of course but still

(REAL NAME) (m coleman), Friday, 17 August 2012 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

Pareene wrote about it yesterday:

One major institutional difference between the left-wing and the right-wing media is the right-wing media’s undisguised contempt for its audience. Right-wing blog readers, Rush listeners and Fox viewers of America, take note: They think you’re stupid. All of them.

There’s no other explanation for the conservative media tendency to highlight and publicize stories that any person who’s been following politics for six months would immediately recognize as complete bullshit. This is why the Weekly Standard has created a clock that is counting down to the moment when Barack Obama will drop Joe Biden from the ticket and replace him with Hillary Clinton — an event that everyone knows will not happen. Bill Kristol and his lackeys cannot possibly be dumb enough to actually believe that Obama will blow up his own campaign and pull an entirely pointless V.P. switch. But they obviously think Weekly Standard readers are dumb enough to buy it. Matt Drudge, who knows his audience is stupid (Condi for Veep!), has been pushing the dump Biden story hard all week, just because. Everyone knows it won’t happen.

Re that skinnydipping incident in the Sea of Galilee, let's pause to remember Ross Douthat and WFB Jr.'s drunken splashing in the nude.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 20 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

a golden moment:

There was an hour or so that we spent sprawled on the lawn near the ocean, while bees droned in the gardens nearby, and then we ate lunch on the wraparound porch, with a portly priest whom Buckley called Padre, while Pat smoked beneath a vast black sun hat and talked about seeing The Producers, and about dinner with the Kissingers and the Limbaughs at Le Cirque.
