Five Guys, Smashburger and Culvers are the "acceptable" options in Minnesota. And White Castle.

We just got a few Five Guys in Montreal but I had no idea what they were. I'm not normally a burger person, but are they any good?

This is such a strange turn of conversation for the thread.
They are supposed to be the best I think; I'd love to try one but balk at the idea of spending $6 for a burger.

Kinda into Chipotle. Lol @ this from Marketplace: "...we're in what you might call 'the Chipotle economy,' which is that people want to feel like they're paying McDonald's prices but they're getting Chili's."

They want to feel like they're paying McD's prices but are actually paying Chili's? Or they want to feel like they're paying McD's prices but getting that high-caliber Chili's quality?

Omg Steve I just realized I can show you the excellent Central Saint Martins collection this way:

In 1947, Mother Benedict introduced an alternative denim “work habit” in solidarity with the American blue-collar worker. A progressive, self-reliant farming and artistic community, they live by the motto ora et labora (prayer and work), and each member is encouraged to find her professional and artistic calling so that she can better serve the community as a whole.http://juliasherman.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MG_7124-2_web.jpghttp://juliasherman.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MG_7143_web.jpg

wait - A&W is a Canadian thing too?!? Seriously?
Wait, I was going to say that we have A&W here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26W_Restaurants) but the: A&W is a Canadian fast food restaurant chain. It was originally part of the U.S.-based A&W Restaurants chain, but was sold to Unilever in 1972, and then bought out by management in 1995. It no longer has any connection to A&W operations outside Canada.
The Canadian menu has some similarities to the current offerings of the American chain, but (not surprisingly given their independent management) also diverges in many respects. The only Burger Family product currently available by name in U.S. locations is the Papa Burger, although it differs significantly (adding lettuce, tomato, and cheese slices which are not included by default on the Canadian product). However, the American "Original Bacon Cheeseburger" appears to be almost exactly equivalent to the Teen Burger available in Canada. Notable products on the U.S. menu not available in Canada include deep-fried cheese curds, cheese fries, and soft serve-based products such as sundaes.[5]
Lol "teen burger"

when i was in seattle with theo (and also where i met the rev), we were always joking about stuffing ourselves with Dick's: http://www.ddir.com/ (not bad, insanely cheap).
never been to five guys. never been to a chipotle. never been to a panera. mcdonald's coffee is okay if there's nothing else around (sometimes happens, weirdly). otherwise, i stick with the local burger stands and taco joints. (only been to an in-n-out twice in my life).

i don't get the in-n-out thing tbh
― half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)
In-N-Out was the most "that's it?" experience I've ever had with fast food, even with the obvious adjusted expectations.
― Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)
Highly hyped regional foods and establishments can be like that, e.g., Tastykakes, Chicago style hot dogs, cheesesteaks, and cheese curds. Cheese curds were a big disappointment. The squeaking was intolerable.
― Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
Tastykakes used to be great but enough formula changes have rendered them ick (though the choc cupcakes are still tooootally fuck-withable as are the butterscotch krimpets). Cheesesteaks are awesome but so are tons of other things; pork sandwich w garlicky broc rabe and sharp provolone (philly's other sandwich) is much better/deserves more recognition.
In-N-Out is amazing and so is chipotle, fuck y'all I'm out*drops mic*
― the mandy moorhols (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
the only tastykakes i really f/w are the kandy kakes, but you can't any of them anywhere in the US west of austin

― half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)
I like all of the things I listed, I was just saying that they will inevitably be a let-down for someone who has paid heed to the hype. Oysters were like that for me. Tastykakes, too, to an extent, but I had only heard them praised by Baltimorians for a few months before I tried a Butterscotch Krimpet, so my expectations weren't as unrealistic.
― Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
To Seattlites, Dick's jokes are just so tiresome that no one over the age of 15 makes them, which always makes me happy to get together with out-of-towner, cause then it's like free reign. That said, I don't really like Dick's at all. Portland's local chain Burgerville is so much better it's ridiculous.

Quiet around here lately. No one been doing anything gay this week? I know I haven't.
Did have a convo with two (hetero, male) coworkers abt group sex this week, though. One guy (a bit of a phobe, really, but in that dumb insecure straight guy way, not in the crazed bible thumping way, hence why I don't take much offense) said he could never be in a sexual situation with other guys for fear of accidentally brushing up against Something he didn't want to. I told him that I don't think you're allowed to be squeamish about these kinda things if you get involved in them. Other guy (who I've never, ever got any kind of gay vibe off of, and still don't) agreed with me and then went on to subtly imply that he'd have no problem actually doing stuff with guys in such a situation, somewhat to my surprise. There's a good chance he was just saying that to creep the other guy out; he likes to call him out on his homophobic b.s. though it still seems like quite a length to go through for a straight guy just to let another one know how silly he's being. Plus,I also think he feels bad that I never speak up or acknowledge it when the first guy says shit about gays (my reason for not doing so isnt shyness but really because the stuff he says is too childish and silly for me to even acknowledge), which is really kinda sweet if you think abt it.
Point is, straight guys are fun.
― to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Monday, 13 August 2012 06:14 (thirteen years ago)
That is cool of that that guy is aware and empathetic.
A straight friend has taken to engaging in gay verbal horseplay w/ me, which is cute. Pretty much all my other straight guy friends do that kind of thing, too, but this guy does it in a *kinder* way, I guess. Like when he calls or texts or meets me, he calls me babe or darlin or and hugs me. In a text this weekend, he addressed me as "tenderpussy," which was awesome and hilarious. No gay vibe at all. I was friends w/ his fiancee years before he came along and I can tell that she likes that we get along.
