Have you been to Mantee in Studio City, and if so how does it compare? I like Mantee, but likely not as cheap as your find.

i have a food writer pal in town and at the behest of a local food enthusiast she knows we went on an insane taco crawl today:
mariscos jalisco truck in boyle heights (best shrimp taco i've ever had)mercado olympic (we had a bunch of things here - tacos en canasta, lamb tacos, some samples of pulque and techape, squash blossom enchiladas, this dish that's basically a bunch of different fruits and chile mangos and pork skin served in a bowl with chile powder over everything, pork rinds, horchata)ricky's fish tacos (fish taco and jamaica)guelaguetza in koreatown (mole sampler, chilaquiles, and i had a shot of del maguey vida)

My sis is likely moving to l.a. to take a job working downtown. She is considering living (for ease of commute) in silver lake, Los Feliz, or downtown. Any suggestions for her? Part of her wants to live in a little house in silver lake, but another part of her wants to live in a loft downtown (so she can be close to work).
She's moving from San Francisco, where she has a beautiful old Victorian apartment with lots of character and built-ins. Is there anywhere in l.a. where she could find an apartment like that?
― Virginia Plain, Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:06 (twelve years ago) link
she's not going to find victorians in l.a., but she should look at silver lake or los feliz for craftsman-style bungalows.
― choom gangnam style (get bent), Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:09 (twelve years ago) link
downtown is great, but it's close to skid row and has a very large homeless presence -- a lot of drugs and mental illness. not the safest place for a woman to be alone after dark.
― choom gangnam style (get bent), Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago) link
echo park has some nice bungalows too
― half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:30 (twelve years ago) link
+ is close to downtown
Angelino Heights is right next to downtown and has Victorians but it's very small and more houses than rentals but I feel I have seen a few apartment listings. You would need a car imo because it is sort of isolated.
― buzza, Sunday, 26 August 2012 01:32 (twelve years ago) link
Thanks for the advice ... I most see her in a little house in silver lake or Los Feliz, but she seems to think that living downtown for a year while getting the lay of the land might be a good idea. Is echo park safe(r) than downtown? She seems to think it might be a bit dicey?
If it was up to me, I think I would live in an old 1920s era Spanish/Moorish-style apartment court in Hollywood. You know, like, the Garden of Allah.
― Virginia Plain, Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:09 (twelve years ago) link
How about Mt. Washington/Lincoln Heights/South Pasadena area? Basically anything along the Gold LIne that makes her commute easier.
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:55 (twelve years ago) link
Of course the big question here is how much is she willing to spend on rent.
I wouldn't say echo park is less safe than downtown sorta varies block to block in both areas though the skid row area is truly scary
― buzza, Sunday, 26 August 2012 04:34 (twelve years ago) link
Ha this is probably typical of Angelino heights aptsYou can live right next to Victorian landmarksCool place tho but LA has become just as overpriced as SF & NYChttp://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/apa/3211953188.html

― buzza, Sunday, 26 August 2012 07:00 (twelve years ago) link
She makes a lot more money than I do and is willing to pay around ~2000 on rent. She loves that Angelino heights apt (as do i) but her problem with that nabe is that she says there are no stores around.
I'm liking the lil Tokyo idea!

silverlake los feliz and downtown aren't far enough from one another where it'll make a difference living in one over the other for the first year, so she should just take whatever place she likes the most, and considering what she's willing to pay on rent she'll have a lot of choices. I mean downtown imo has completely changed, even within the last 6 months, so like, just dont bring a tent and put it up in skid row and you'll be fine

There are some adorable bungalows in Pasadena...but she thinks its a bit far.
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link
She should live in an adorable bungalow in HIGHLAND PARK near the Gold Line and work downtown...just like I do (for now). Better hurry though, they're going fast.
― Aceveda (admrl), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:07 (twelve years ago) link
I would say Mount Washington if it weren't for the stores thing.
Honestly though, she doesn't need to live NEAR stores.
