Around the time of the Cindy Crawford Playboy spread I remember surveying my fellow seventh graders about whether they would rather have a perfect, long-lasting marriage to a beautiful woman who they were compatible with in every way, or a one-night-stand with Cindy Crawford. I'm pretty sure no one chose the marriage.

The comment about Ms. Beckinsale upthread understates things. Her transformation from uber-cute to kinda-scary generic thin person makes me sad. Then I dug the whole nu-flapper thing so much during those years; one could seek out movies set in the 20s and 30s just to look at hot chicks in bobs. Tops of course were Kate B., Tara Fitzgerald, and Polly Walker:

I feel sort of cranky about the whole creeping 90's revivalism/reduction thing now, in spite of its inevitability. At the time the decade didn't seem to have any unifying, cohesive theme or aesthetic and now there's a lot of effort to force one on it. But I guess I'm just getting old.
