you know, i was a little ticked when i found out about the split season, but now that we've started into s5 im actually glad they're doing it this way. i think that extra time's really gonna help them stick the landing (ie. we get a better payoff than the plane crash)

Ah, I thought it might be the 3 Stooges, but they never caught on over here as far as I'm aware. I only know about them from references in other media.

Wondering how Todd is going to come into this in the next few episodes.
― cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Monday, 30 July 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)
I think Todd will be the first guy Walt kills just to show he's tough.

Also seriously wondering where Skinny Pete learned to play Bach like that. Not that I think it will be a major plot point or anything. (If for no other reason than that it's in a minor key. HA! I kill me.)

TVLine is reporting that Jesse Plemons has signed on for a major recurring role on the forthcoming season of "Breaking Bad." Plemons will portray Todd, a young man who is described as " dependable" and "innocuous;" but the report also warns that Todd may not be what he appears to be.

Forks otm. Mob Week was probably first dreamed up back when they were planning the first Shark Week.
― Your sweet bippy is going to hell (WmC), Monday, 30 July 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
it would be pretty surprising to me if the guys in programming told people higher up at the network to get in touch with the producers of Breaking Bad and have 'em tell their writers to work in stuff about what they're going to be showing during week 4, but hey it's not like I know anybody who works in the biz or anything, you're probably right, all this stuff gets planned in the exact same room and the conduits you're imagining wouldn't actually be so labyrinthine that navigating them in the clean easy way you imagine would be 100% impossible to do
― steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 30 July 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
Episode was shot at the same time they were setting up programming for that season.

― joaquin haus-partizan (s1ocki), Monday, 30 July 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)
it doesn't seem like it would be a craaaaazy leap to say that the same time they were filming a show to air this season that they might be programming for that season's other shows does it?

the crazy leap is how you imagine this taking place - the producers of (I think) the most successful show on the network, one of the most buzz-heavy shows around, aren't probably beholden to the network about whether to put a tie-in for a thematic week of programming into an episode. even if they were, you get that how this would take place involves people's agents & managers & business managers & things they'd need (=$$$) to make this happen: not just one (the "executive producer") but directors & writers. Many of whom have creative control clauses written into their contracts as soon as they get any juice at all. And probably, unless they signed on for the entire show's run at the outset of it, the major stars: a what-I'm-shilling-for clause in a contract is p. standard afaik. Every screenwriter I know would be very insulted to be told "you have to put something in about Scarface, have them watching Scarface, the network said they're showing it that week and they want some help."
it could be, I guess - it's not unimaginable - I just get a big wasp in my nose about how people think the entertainment biz is this super-easy-to-read thing where a guy at a desk with a cigar and a wad of money in his fist calls up a screenwriter, shouts some directions into a phone & slams the phone down, and then the director adjusts his tie and sweats three fat drops of fear-sweat and barks at a nearby kid in a fedora: "Jimmy! Quick! Write in something about Scarface with this week's script or it's curtains for the show and we're all eatin' cheese sandwiches!"

and the sequence in question makes sense with ANY gangster film. If i were a screenwriter i would WANT to use scarface; AMC has the rights to use it so why not integrate?
― I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 July 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)
the important thing is that it's a silly thing to have walt watching when skylar walks in, gimme a break

They don't have the rights to use it. They had to contact Universal and get the rights, and get Al Pacino's okay as well.

Every screenwriter I know would be very insulted to be told "you have to put something in about Scarface, have them watching Scarface, the network said they're showing it that week and they want some help."
That's definitely not what I think happened. I figure somebody at AMC went to Gilligan's Island and said "We want to do a 'mob week' programming block sometime during BB Season 5.1. Is there a scene anytime during the season where characters might be watching violent shit on the tv? If so, would you consider making it one of these movies? If not, I will respectfully withdraw, O Profitable One."

yeah it was an eye-rolling scene even without the possible tie-in
although the cut to the money-counting machine sounding like gunfire was a little more clever

And Gilligan loves to talk about this stuff ad nauseam, so I fully expect confirmation at the end of S5.2, if not 5.1.

There's that great line that Bryan Cranston ad-libbed that is not in the script for the episode: "Everybody dies in this movie." Who knows if that's foreshadowing or not.
good one Cranston
