one of my favorite things to do is to build a miniature apartment building out of $100 bills, then set it on fire, and then get in my firetruck which i made out of $100 bills and spray $100 bills at it until the fire is smothered out with my $100 bills

there is about one star born each year in our galaxy

the number of stars in the galaxy is approximately constant

so about one star dies each year in the milky way

there are about 10 billion stars in the galaxy

therefore a random star has a 1 in 10 billion chance of exploding each year.

we can't see individual stars outside or galaxy. the galaxy is about 100 000 light years across. so let's say the most distant star you can observe with the naked eye is 100 000 light years away.

then putting it all together the chance a random star has died since the light you are now observing left it is, at most, 1 in 100 000

one time my friends and i went to a best of the twin cities show at first avenue and one of the bands playing was this awful 12 person jam band fire-twirling and acrobatic nightmare named Wookiefoot and as they played a cover of "Scarlet Begonias" my friend mike started loudly and drunkenly bitching about the horror and a hippie near us retaliated by dumping an entire vial of patchouli on jeff and we all had to share a cab ride home in the winter with all the windows rolled up.

and thats what i think about the Greatful Dead.

Misc. Carnivora (Matt P), Saturday, 28 July 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

Mr Perry, you must remember Jamaican independence well, you were a young man of 25 in 1962...?
1962! What happened then?

Jamaican independence…
Where you are?

I'm in London. I was just wondering if you were involved at all?
I wasn't involved in anything with colonial government business. I have my own music government, black supremacy, Ethiopia family, Africa family, Addis Ababa, something like that. All the riches of the earth is black. The isle is black. When they came and see the isle they brought the vampire with them to eat the children's blood, they hijacked them and they lowjacked them… Do you have a tape machine running?

I do.
That's very good. The old fella sings a cappella and he took his umbrella and here comes the lightning flash, KNNNNNARARCARHHHH.

When did the lightning flash?
It flashed for the government exterminator, the high priest become low priest and then low beast, moo cow HOOOOOWARGHhhhhh.

When did this happen, in 1962?
Nahhhh. It's coming shortly! Fire government, water government, flood government. It's coming soon…!

Will you be around to see it?
I will be coming to you from fire fire fire fire! Super hot hot hot! Here comes the jungle god! Lee Scratch Perry on the wire!

And after you arrive?
A few people will be gods and goddesses and angels! And the others all kaput! Great balls of fire… WAAAAAARGHHH!

Will you be a benign ruler do you reckon?
Cosmic energy telepathic all the time!

Are you receiving that energy already?
In my music.

When did you feel it first?
Back in Jamaica!

Was that before independence?
Independence! I don't want no white coat, I don't want no white goat! Baaaa baaaa! This is the future speaking! I feel the telepathic power! I was born 1936. Nine nine nine, I never changed my mind. I have the hot line... why should I die, I'm not eating dead mwaah, I'm not eating dead moooo, why should I die? I was travelling from BC to AD when you called. I'm in my black coat. My mission is secret. Secret number 9. Nine nine nine... so that's my news on independence!

No way, it's totally Die Hard With A Vengeance:

* formerly "nighttime" series is suddenly in broad daylight
* things are blowing up all over the city and there's a lot of commuting
* villain's scheme involves phony 'construction' projects
* villain speaks largely in riddles, nobody really is clear what his actual plan is (1)
* but definitely the plan involves bomb(s) whose location in the city is not always clear
* way way longer and more episodic/rambling than previous two movies
* unlike previous two movies, long sequences are devoted to non-lead characters pursuing subplots and tracking the bomb(s)
* hero previously seen as a loner (though sometimes connected by radio links to ground personnel) now has a partner with whom to butt heads
* said partner calls into question hero's assumptions about himself, suggesting he may be a privileged insider to the system
* hero spends most of the movie recovering from a serious physical disadvantage
* also, hero is recovering from loss of his major love interest, a key character in previous two movies but not seen here
* an underground locale is flooded catastrophically by river water
* new villain has family connection to first movie's villain, second movie's villain is not mentioned
* new villain claims to be motivated by revenge re: dead family member, although sometimes they don't really seem to give a shit about that
* villain is actually a villain-pair, male and female, one brains and one brawn (2)
* staggered multi-ending, with final coda at considerable geographic remove from climax
* etc.?

(1) though, to be fair, Joker's schoolbus heist in TDK is a lot closer to the DHWAV heist
(2) DHWAV makes the woman the brawn, somewhat refreshingly

― Doctor Casino, Monday, July 30, 2012 4:25 PM (33 minutes ago)

Oh, and

* villain answers mainly to an adopted name which makes him more sinister
* villain speaks in a crisp, somewhat hard to place Euro-accent
* villain constructs elaborate scenarios designed to torment the hero as a sideshow to his REAL plan

― Doctor Casino, Monday, July 30, 2012 4:29 PM (28 minutes ago)

so the local sports talk station's "Power Trip Morning Show" has a recurring guest, this dude from the band Motion City Sountrack, a sort a b-level pop punk/emo type major label band, seems like they do ok, the are from mpls....anyway, they do that thing where they run ads for their shows with funny highlights from a recent show, etc....

anyway, i only heard the soundbite in the ad, but i take it that one of the dudes in the band (or maybe some other guy they know) is a songwriter as well for bigger rock bands....

and scene:

He's supposed to meet Chad Kroger of Nickelback at a restaurant. The meeting is about how this guy might sell some songs to Nickelback for an upcoming album. So they are talking and he gives Kroger the demo CD, etc, and Kroger is like, "Well, are you going to sing them?".....the guy says, "Well, I'd prefer if you just listen to the stuff, we're in a crowded restaurant not really comfortable doing that".....Kroger interrupts and is like "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE IN YOUR SONGS IF YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THE BALLS TO SING THEM RIGHT NOW??"

then, Kroger stands up, kicks over his chair and belts out LOOOOOOK AT THIS PHOOOOTOGRAAAPH/EVERYTIME I DO IT MAKES ME LAAAAUGH like LOUD AS FUCK and the whole restaurant is obviously looking at him and Kroger just struts out of the restaurant and leaves the dude sitting at the table.
