Took an hour in Boystown this weekend and, tho I'm aware of how the regulars here feel about the place, it made me sort of wish that Mpls's gay bars were more centrally located.

Also, love that it's just a block or two away from straight douche-n-hooch-ville.

Boystown is not somewhere I want to spend much time, but there are some decent bars there. It's about as appealing as Wrigleyville (douche-n-hooch-ville) for me, except that Boystown has more dick available.

How diverse are the Boystown bars? I always bitch abt Philly's Gayborhood (ALL the gay bars in the city in one tight cluster, self-ghettoization, people refusing to set foot outside of, etc) but mostly because all the bars are more or less the same. Or rather, there is no chill/cool/"alt" spot like NYC's Nowhere or Metropolitan or (RIP) Phoenix. There are like 6 twinky bars, 2 bearish/older dude bars, and a good Cheers-y happy hour place that is literally the only gay bar w draft beer.

Oh I thought it closed! Did it move? I don't know. Anyway the few times I went there (once was w you, surm!) it seemed not totally Queer As Folky

Also I'm wrong, there are a few gay bars in Philly w/ draft beer (keyword: few) but its still surprising there's no hipstery gay bar.

yeah i remember we were in the back room - i like that room. there was NO one in there on friday, everybody was out in the open and looking tall and sleek

Really "model explosion"? Maybe I'm understanding that as more exclusive and A-Listy than you mean. Or maybe I know how to avoid them.

The bars I've spent any time have been Bucks, North End, Lucky Horseshoe, Bobby Loves, The Cell Block, and Little Jim's, which were the only ones that stand out from the shinier Boystown thing, at which bars you see plenty of men over 40 (scenes, as listed: sort of bear-ish, sports, strippers, just-a-bar, leather, one of only a few 4:00/5:00 a.m. bars w/ a hint of dive).

The rest of Boystown is kind of homogenous from what I can tell.

I thought surm meant "model explosion" as homogenous, tbh.

But, then again, I can be a little bit of a yawn boring Sidetrack kind of guy the rare occasions I decide to go out. So stone me.

I bailed on "the Phoenix excursion" after we left Julius'. Probably for some fucking movie.

julius' is kind of expensive for what it is but i like it, didn't go there very often tho

I was at Julius' last night when the Dirty Looks people were showing Tearoom ... kind of didn't work... WCBS-FM and Jeopardy were also playing.

The (kinda hipsterish?) Boystown bar I remember liking was Berlin, right next to the Belmont el station, notably not on Halsted.

oh man – I visited Berlin in 2002 on my first visit to Chicago. Picked up a guy, cautioned my friends to stay away for a couple hours, and couldn't finish the devil's business thanks to their coming in and talking nervous shit about Pearl Jam from the other bed.

Young in number only, I got an old-man body and old-man problems. I see the appeal of a place like Metropolitan or Nowhere but they're not unique-to-NYC enough for me to want to go, as a visitor. And the last time I went to Sway I got in a fight. (Usually I end up at Von tbh.)

xp If that's your greatest fear I'd say you're doing fine. That said, I never believe people when they say that, like "did you have polio" or "were you grossly obese".

Plus, they often show side-by-side pics that confirm, no, you are actually not in better shape than you were in high school.
