he's actually a p great example of why it's important for people to travel when they're younger
― sean gramophone, Monday, 23 July 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link
He's never been much of a road comic iirc, instead inhabiting whatever city he's lived in at the time (Boston, LA, NYC, SF). I mean, he tours a little bit, but he's not one of those road warrior comics.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 July 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link
And his international travel seems to have been limited to one trip to italy when he was young, then China ("Disorienting! They eat crazy shit!") UK/Edinburgh ("Terrible! They don't get me!") and Australia ("Pretty fun but too far from home"), when he was a 40something comic.
Seriously, it's a lesson in why smart people need to go to unfamiliar places when they're still young, to teach them something about caricature and perspective.
― sean gramophone, Monday, 23 July 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link
The way he hammered on about Hill People with Scovel was just stupid and embarrassing. Like, I know he plays it up to show what an ignoramus he is, but no one else gets a kick out of it but him! It normally doesn't annoy me AS much, but this time it really did.
fuckin hill people, of all things. cmon.

I'm just glad I'm not alone in noticing/being o_0 at this particularity in his interviewing style. Honestly can't even imagine what he made of Fiona Apple. Did she eat him for breakfast?
― nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 23 July 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link
actually he was pretty good, and sympathetic to Fiona Apple.
that's the thing, Maron's not always 'Maron' with every subject. He has the capacity to be very senstive and insightful given the right subject matter. I think because of his bipolar dad he's pretty good with mental health, and knowing that Apple had that stage breakdown I think prepared him to handle her pretty carefully.
she didn't have to eat him for breakfast. she eventually came roaring to life towards the end and was pretty fascinating overall. it's worth a listen.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 July 2012 17:00 (eleven years ago) link
alright -- will do. i like her/find her more interesting as a person more than i like her music, i think, but i haven't listened to the new one. the others were not really to my liking that much.
also it should be known that i use the wtf podcast specifically to put me to sleep, esp when he won't stop talking about all those guys, guys this guys that blablabla. fast acting, and effective nonnarcotic insomnia treatment.

nah she talks about how she's related to actual hill-people (or was that the sara benincasa one? i think it was fiona).

My grandmother's maiden names were Collins and Powell, neither ever discussed their childhoods or relations (Mrs. Powell actively lying about hers), genealogical research has been weird and difficult but in both cases there are clues leading to specific counties discussed in that Wikipedia article. Hmmmm.....

New John Oliver interview is v enjoyable. Though I wanted to climb through my headphones and push Maron out of the way when Oliver casually says he befriended Richard Ayoade in his first year of Cambridge. "Okay that it I'm taking over this interview, Maron, I love you but you are BUFFOON"
from this I was expecting Kitson not to come up at all, so it was a pleasant surprise that he did. really wish Maron had seen 66a instead of Interminable Suicide, if he'd had to see a story show - obviously it would be most preferable to actually catch Kitson stand-up

I thought of this post today when listening to "Comedy Film Nerds" doing an extended riff on 'who the fuck is this Richard Ayoade guy?'

Ayoade was on Nerdist - which I'd hoped would be awesome but it's being dragged down awfully by the AMERICANS do it THIS way and the ENGLISH do it THIS way zzzzzz
but dude is so quick and so delightfully dry, he could read the phone book and I'd love it

this seems crazy, I couldn't bear to have the sound of Maron's voice blaring away by my bedside as I settle down for the night. I use In Our Time for this purpose, it is delightfully soporific.

A friend came to visit from London, I said, Marc Maron lives down the street, we see him all the time. Friend and I went for huaraches on our first day out, as we are sitting outside, I catch Marc getting out of a car across the street and walking towards us. I cough at my friend "ARK ARON!!!", give it the eyes, which I'm sure was obvious, but I wanted to give my friend his official LA celebrity sighting. Maron walks past us into the restaurant with a young woman (not his girlfriend) and he is saying to her "so, do you want to get into comedy writing or not?". It was very Marc.

still on Oliver: loved the dynamic between him and Maron, it was reminiscent of when Scharpling first appeared on that live ep. either Maron should try and get him on again, or maybe more WTFs should be done at 7.30AM before he has time to neuroticise about anything
― ¥╡*ٍ*╞¥ (sic), Thursday, 26 July 2012 01:42 (eleven years ago) link
It sounds like Maron and Scharpling have plans to do more together, but going by the success of their last paid podcast, I don't think we'll be getting any more free material involving the two.

Ugh, yeah, that was the worst live one yet. And I was really looking forward to Retta. Her story about Nick Offerman and "vagina" was the only laugh I got out of the whole thing.

how that this is on real radio i can hear it sometime.
Ben Stiller said he was "just hanging out" at the Improv around 1990, but I think he means the successful LA one rather than the sinking NY flagship I was appearing at.
