Oh! I know my real, ultimate answer: David Byrne. (It's hard to think of things at first.) Fits the definition as I understand it perfectly -- he's very good, but not as great as I often think he it, and not as clever as he often thinks he is. But god help me, I love everything he does.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 22 January 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Man, I love me most all the TH there is, but some of those solo albums are tough going. Like the one with Snoopy on the cover sitting on a celestial throne.

That's "Uh-Oh." You know, like, uh-oh, god turns out to be a puppy. See, not as clever as he thinks. I don't mind the album at all, though.

yeah, I got the god/dog thing. It's been years since I heard it - maybe I'd like it better now.

Barack History Month (Oilyrags), Thursday, 22 January 2009 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

It's very late-Heads, actually.

I'm not sure I'm like this with anyone! I'm a little surprised to realize this.

TACOS

carne asada, Thursday, 22 January 2009 05:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think it counts if it's not someone you could send an insane obsessive letter to. (Whether or not they are alive to read it.) Rock doesn't really work, nor roll. Certainly not tacos. I mean, I'd stalk Chess records if I could, but not even I have that much imaginative psychosis.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 22 January 2009 05:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Otherwise it's just a list of "things I like," amirite?

lolz.

Tacos are not here, and I have not seen them in a while. I worry that tacos are lonely. They're so old-school, though -- no IM, no email. I should write. It's the same way with my grandmother.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 22 January 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I totally want to post a letter with just "Tacos" as a destination address now.

like i said, i like this thread, and i think i understand why "stan" is being used to describe the answers - it's a kind of sheepish acknowledgement of one's own total SUNKNESS re: the ish at hand; HOWEVER i'm not keen on the concomitant acceptance this word makes inevitable that any kind of overweening admiration is somehow lame, pathetic, almost pathological (it's a little like saying "what shit do you really LOVE - no homo"). maybe you can't have one without the other

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 22 January 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago) link

No I'm sure that you can have slavish, slathering dedication to an artist with no self-awareness at all.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 22 January 2009 10:43 (fifteen years ago) link

But I do know what you mean. That's why I revised my answer... Orson Welles is too good for disclaimers, but David Byrne? Yeah, ok, my level of enthusiasm might be out of sync with reality sometimes.

totally loling at this shit. you guys are great

carne asada, Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought it wasn't things we like, it's things we like irrationally and defend beyond a reasonable point?

i wanna roll stuff UP, i don't wanna NOT roll stuff up!!!! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i think its more things you love and know abt too much - the defending flows naturally out of that

ice cr?m, Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

being a stan is a hard thing to describe, i suppose its possible to be a french fries stan or whatever but its unfair to be like "omg i love french fries" and call yourself a stan--a true french fry stan goes to belgium every couple years and keeps up w/ advancing french fry technology and knows what flavors are in the oil at mcdonalds and stuff

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

also a big thing about being a stan imo is maintaining a high and unusual level of interest in periods when the rest of the public has lost interest. hamburgers have always been a staple of american cuisine and have never really fallen out of favor, therefore im not sure that you can really "stan" for hamburgers

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i was kind of ignoring the "knows a lot about x" part of the definition. by that definition, i am less of a stan of anything, really.
