That's cute, growing up....nothing to do with selling ad time, who companies like to advertise to, etc....

Iago Galdston, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

Right. Which is why he's extended that slightly nicer persona to...an ad-free special he sold on his website.

Simon H., Friday, 20 July 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

I find it much easier to believe that he's just changed over time as a person than that he's meticulously altering the material in his show that costs next to no money to make.

Simon H., Friday, 20 July 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

I detected a very subtle yet continuous shift in Louie's character from the beginning to make him nicer, and take the sharp edges off--it wasn't triggered by reading the reviews. it goes hand in hand with cleaning up his apartment, making it tonier, etc....it's just in the nature of taking the show to the next level of popularity. but to me it's losing what made it special

thread officially psycho

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

what's so weird about that? noticing how the style of the show has developed? Jeez, sorry...

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 21 July 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

are any of the people mad at this show for not being funny appreciating it dramatically/on other levels, or is it just a wasted half hour for y'all?

sometimes. i didn't laugh a ton about the smashed car window ep, but i thought it was provocative. the last episode (the miami one) i thought was unfunny and dramatically superficial. that was a wasted half hour for me. this most recent one i enjoyed.

Mordy, Saturday, 21 July 2012 02:05 (thirteen years ago)

i thought the miami one was amazing. can see how it would be totally polarizing tho. this one was v. hit and miss to me, but felt like a "typical" louie episode in a way i think the show needs. not every episode can or should be all over the place. he needs the more straightforward observational ones to sort of iterate around.

s.clover, Saturday, 21 July 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

miami one was my favorite so far this season

horseshoe, Saturday, 21 July 2012 02:37 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, the Miami one was fantastic.

I was watching last night's and thinking "ooh, who's that hot bookstore girl" intitally...until it became clear that it was Parker Posey and I lost interest immediately.

The asking her out scene was cute, though. And the fist pump.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

Posey's still got it

Number None, Saturday, 21 July 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

Bookstore's in my old neighborhood, ay

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

posey was really good! the dynamic of her being the woman-in-the-bookstore & louie having to confront the gulf he was jumping in asking her out was great.

i wondered which book store that was, i didn't recognise it?

, Blogger (schlump), Saturday, 21 July 2012 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

haven't seen s3e4 yet.

i watched a few eps from the 1st season a couple of days ago. and yeah, fuck this season. so far.

that was a wasted half hour for me. this most recent one i enjoyed.

If you guys honestly think this way then I think you have an inflated view of television's intended function

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 21 July 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

what do you mean? how it enjoying/not enjoying a show not the most basic level of television's intended function?

Mordy, Sunday, 22 July 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

The first sentence, Mordius

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 22 July 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)

It was dumb and boring aka waste zzzz

Mordy, Sunday, 22 July 2012 06:41 (thirteen years ago)

Can't believe you WASTED a half hour looking at a box whose entire existence is predicated on helping us waste time

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

Can't believe this glorified conduit for Axe Body Spray advertisements didn't improve the quality my life in the 30 minutes of my life I actively and willfully surrendered to it

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:16 (thirteen years ago)

What's the beef?

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

whether shows on tv can be a waste of time given that the device was invented for timewasting. also does this create dimensional wormholes y/n etc zzz

oh, that's what is bugging u? this seems like a very minor concern.

Mordy, Monday, 23 July 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

y'know Whiney, some people tend to want to enjoy the things they watch on TV

frogbs, Monday, 23 July 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

ok caught the Parker Posey ep and really enjoyed. suck it, me of two days ago.

will kill hitler next time.

yeah I thought the Parker Posey interactions were p cute. And I loved Bamford's grudging hookups with Louie.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 July 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

ok THAT was an awesome episode. were the last two minutes a stardust memories reference?

Manic Posey Dream Girl

Dan I., Friday, 27 July 2012 07:27 (thirteen years ago)

That deli food looked fine as hell

Dan I., Friday, 27 July 2012 07:38 (thirteen years ago)

Would've bailed on that date pretty early.

Amoeba, Fish, Monkey, Shame (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 27 July 2012 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

the deli was russ and daughters -- total lower east side institution, been open since 1914. more an "appetizing store" than a proper deli.

I got serious Woody vibes from it. From the walking through NY with wacky girl, shades of Diane Keaton (shades...not really the same), to that end sequence which also made me think of Stardust Memories.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2012 12:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah ^^. woody's adoring sequence of charlotte rampling is one of my favs. louie's acting on the roof got way into woody territory, too- so you aren't there so you won't fall with the falling &c.

this was interesting anyway. i liked his switch to okay kid, sure thing sport as soon as he was freaked by her shouting on the stairs. the rooftop part was really intense.

i kinda thought she was gonna jump. that opening part in the bar is kind of ominous. i thought there'd be a big reveal later on, but then again I usually forget what show I'm watching

frogbs, Friday, 27 July 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

that didn't do much for me at all.

I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 July 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

wth does she say at the very end? right after "let's go home, ok?"

yeah there wasn't much covered here that posey didn't cover when she was like nineteen

I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 July 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

oh & the music on this ep killed. the piece on the roof w/the female vocals, so good.

, Blogger (schlump), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

he's pretty much totally given up on the show being a comedy at this point and I am 100% ok w/ that.

Simon H., Friday, 27 July 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

this was too squirm-inducing for me. i felt so awkward after and yet i don't think i laughed once.

Yeah and I ~obstruction~ you/ya fucking blind cunt (pause) fucking k (a hoy hoy), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

xp the music is my favorite part of the show

shaane, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

The music was definitely more elaborate than usual this week.

Simon H., Friday, 27 July 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

i was rewatching i think ep 1 of this season w/someone recently & they said, is this coltrane, re: a slow lifting horn kinda dirge he uses - i hadn't recognised it but it reminds me of naima or something. was in last night's, too.

i am not 100% sure i am doing the math right but something that's weird about this season is that it's the first, i think, that isn't based on a set of toured stand up material - the tour he did prior to filming was the Beacon special, which he released, whereas with the last couple of series' he's toured a show that has been chopped up into the tv shows, like word. & there's new, good standup in this, but probably less, & the show also goes in other directions. i don't think they're necessarily causal, but it's kinda interesting that the schedule & the release of the beacon meant he was making this season w/o the same quantity of standup bits.

open to corrections if i did my sums wrong on this.

I prefer the "early, funny ones" (that's from Stardust Memories to bring the Rampling-Posey homage full circle) of seasons 1 and 2 to Louis-as-auteur and Woody imitator...

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

that episode was fucking horrid. WHERE IS THE FUNNY

don't have a problem with no funny
have a problem with recycled archetypes and surprising lack of original ideas
