Just listening to Not Sold Out now. Bill Hicks cast a long shadow, huh?

Eh, not so much. The only similarities between Hicks and Maron imo is "loud, cranky white guy".

And conspiracies, and willing to mock the audience for "hey, where's the funny gone", and hyperbolic rants abotu popular culture...

yeah there's definitely a fair amount of common ground, there, although maron generally has a different overall tone

I dunno what he used to be like but Maron's stand-up now is a long way from Hicks' style of ranting.

Well I only go by what I heard - Johhny put Not Sold Out up with Killin' Them Softly, and it was on Spotify, so I had a listen and that's what I heard.

I guess if you're already a Hicks fan/admirer, you might make the connection a little easier than someone who isn't (me!).

I love Hicks and Maron, I just never saw the connection. but I haven't listened to Maron's old material so Andrew could well be right

i saw paul f tompkins' show at jfl last night and it was pretty freakin funny, him and a few other comedians in a really intimate venue. it was great

so that rory scovel bit on conan was just a character he does, huh? i wondered about the southern accent because he doesn't have one on all the other live clips i watched.

He dips in and out of the accent with ease.

i think that was one of the guys from last night? rory scovel? blond beard? he was fuckin funny

i saw paul f tompkins at the bill hader gala last night and he was the best thing about it - all he did was this long bit about joke-store (fake snakes) canned peanut brittle! so funny. i think 30 people in the audience got it.
i wish i had time to see his full show!

he does that bit on one of his albums, its funny

Robyn - This is RS's all time favorite comedy bit in the whole world ever. Ever since the album he did that on came out he will play it every couple months or so and just die laughing. I like it but he finds it next level belly laugh inducing genius.

I am partial to the vampire migrant fruit pickers and the house bear bits. Overall I like him a lot and particularly his stand-up but I can't really handle his podcast stuff. Some of it is great but he often loses me. Idk. His stand-up is more my thing.

i prefer his rambly riffy stuff where he just spends the whole time chuckling at whatever nonsense comes out of his mouth, it so works for me

i go see theatre and other longer-form performances waaay more often than i go see comedy, so when i find myself watching several comedians do 7 minutes of jokes each, i feel a little disappointed, like i want a whole show for each of them or something more cohesive, so pf tompkins just doing one bit for his 7 minutes (or whatever it was) was kind of perfect

he has a great face for self-chuckling

We saw him a couple years ago and he did a lot about the celebrities he's met over the years. He told one story about meeting Tom Cruise at a read through that was hilarious.

His Comedy Central special last year (? the year before?) was great - the stuff he did about his mother's passing was really good.

His latest one, where he talks about jobs he's had, is really good too. (I guess it's more of a "one man show" than a stand-up routine, but it brought lols.)

you just mean Tompkast/being the chatty guest on every podcast in existence or does this exclude Beyond Belief and Cake Boss / Dame Sir ALW / Ice-T / Garry Marshall / John C Reilly having an acting-off with Jon Hamm etc etc too? ;_;
