Rolling Stand-Up Comedy 2012

Two Patton albums were really funny, but then it became apparent it's really easy to ape Patton's style if you just throw a bunch of midgets, goblins, old sci-fi and hollywood references, pie, cake, oatmeal, a roast beef sandwich, and a beloved album from 1984 in a bowl and stir it up.

Like all of Patton's records, but yeah, the last two weren't nearly as replayable as the two prior ones (Werewolves and Lollipops is his masterpiece, and possibly, I'd argue, the great modern stand up record). Still some great bits there, though, like the spam museum and "i hate."

It's up there for me, but Marc Maron's Not Sold Out from 2002 is head and shoulders above everyone else's shit in the last 10 years imo.

(Was Killin' Them Softly ever a proper comedy record? I guess the fact it wasn't is just a technicality, since everyone has audio of that hour anyway. Since I'm counting it, there's a two-way tie.)

That seems like quite an overstatement. I do like Patton's style but IMO his first album is better; I think W&L made me laugh maybe three times?

Then again I would say America's Funnyman is my pick for "the great modern stand up record" so take that with a grain of salt

Neil Hamburger is best experienced in YouTube form. His standup records are too full of dead air and annoying back-and-forth with the audience.

yep. this was before he had his really obnoxious/gross persona worked out and was just a really amateurish comedian who stumbled through all his punchlines, it's really on another level

his first four records are all very good (though "Laugh out Lord") After that he's gotten a lot more abrasive and bad on a more "obvious" level. I liked him a lot more when you could tell his spirit hadn't been fully crushed yet.

i saw n. hamburger in a club where almost nobody (incl me) knew what the fuck it was. he was opening for a rock band. i pretty quickly figured out the schtick, but a lot of people DID NOT. it was really, really, really funny. but maybe only good once.

Wanted to post Neil's Jimmy Kimmel appearances here, but they're gone. These are great, though--love the wtf reaction from some members of the audience.

Are you referring to Neil's Princess Di tribute 7", the b-side (I think) of which was a moment of silence and which came with a complimentary tissue should you feel too emotionally overwhelmed at the loss.

I saw him twice and he's much much funnier as an opening act. When he's doing shows by himself and like 95% of the crowd knows who he is, it really loses a lot.

Yeah Hamburger is best enjoyed in front of a hostile oblivious audience, like at the Faith No More reunion show I saw a few years back. God that was a beautiful thing.

there's a great Maron episode with her -- it's a car trip to and from MaxFunCon a couple of years ago and just the recorded conversation of them chatting about whatever. it's really a great insight into how her comedy works and her history with guys espeically is O_O...it's great if you're not sure about her or on the fence. or if you already like her and want to like her more.

won't help if you don't like her and/or maron though, I don't think.

Hamburger just seemed like post-funny Andy Kaufman w/out the wrestling. I tuned out early.

I like that guy less and less every time I interact with something outside his stage routine.

Just listening to Not Sold Out now. Bill Hicks cast a long shadow, huh?

Eh, not so much. The only similarities between Hicks and Maron imo is "loud, cranky white guy".

And conspiracies, and willing to mock the audience for "hey, where's the funny gone", and hyperbolic rants abotu popular culture...

yeah there's definitely a fair amount of common ground, there, although maron generally has a different overall tone

Well I only go by what I heard - Johhny put Not Sold Out up with Killin' Them Softly, and it was on Spotify, so I had a listen and that's what I heard.

I guess if you're already a Hicks fan/admirer, you might make the connection a little easier than someone who isn't (me!).
