Also Patton Oswalt's story in that same AV Club series really made me cringe, I like that guy less and less every time I interact with something outside his stage routine.

otm. i think he had some weird reinvention upon getting famous that tinged all of his stuff w/a new-agey post-mushrooms enlightenment.

I just feel like maybe he was always shitty and we didn't realize.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)
it used to be so satisfying to hear him be like YYEAAH HASIL ADKINS & have him satisfy your demographic needs (I THOUGHT THEY COULD REALLY ROCK IN SHELBYVILLE). but the last couple of records are all gratuitously casual mentions of listening to pixies records & revelling in the humour of sweatpants. i didn't see his book but his written stuff all seems so intent on stories with mystical human moments & awareness-of-the-universe sentiment, it's schlocky i think.
― , Blogger (schlump), Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)
I tried reading his book and got maybe 10 pages in...it was so bad.
― Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
He's the only comic I've seen live though, and he had a good show.

Two Patton albums were really funny, but then it became apparent it's really easy to ape Patton's style if you just throw a bunch of midgets, goblins, old sci-fi and hollywood references, pie, cake, oatmeal, a roast beef sandwich, and a beloved album from 1984 in a bowl and stir it up.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
Like all of Patton's records, but yeah, the last two weren't nearly as replayable as the two prior ones (Werewolves and Lollipops is his masterpiece, and possibly, I'd argue, the great modern stand up record). Still some great bits there, though, like the spam museum and "i hate."

the great modern stand up record
It's up there for me, but Marc Maron's Not Sold Out from 2002 is head and shoulders above everyone else's shit in the last 10 years imo.
(Was Killin' Them Softly ever a proper comedy record? I guess the fact it wasn't is just a technicality, since everyone has audio of that hour anyway. Since I'm counting it, there's a two-way tie.)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)
I'll check out Not Sold Out. Who's was Killin' Them Softly? Patrice O'Neil?

Werewolves and Lollipops is his masterpiece, and possibly, I'd argue, the great modern stand up record
That seems like quite an overstatement. I do like Patton's style but IMO his first album is better; I think W&L made me laugh maybe three times?
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
Then again I would say America's Funnyman is my pick for "the great modern stand up record" so take that with a grain of salt

x-post I figured you were summoning me with the Killin' Them Softly talk so I'm just checking in.
lol :D

I've been waiting for years for someone to convince me Neil Hamburger is funny, because he ain't doing too well on his own.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
Agreed.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
Neil Hamburger is best experienced in YouTube form. His standup records are too full of dead air and annoying back-and-forth with the audience.
― to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
yep. this was before he had his really obnoxious/gross persona worked out and was just a really amateurish comedian who stumbled through all his punchlines, it's really on another level
his first four records are all very good (though "Laugh out Lord") After that he's gotten a lot more abrasive and bad on a more "obvious" level. I liked him a lot more when you could tell his spirit hadn't been fully crushed yet.
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 July 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
"Some audiences love him. Others hate him. But there's one thing we can all agree on -- everybody loves Neil Hamburger!"
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)
i saw n. hamburger in a club where almost nobody (incl me) knew what the fuck it was. he was opening for a rock band. i pretty quickly figured out the schtick, but a lot of people DID NOT. it was really, really, really funny. but maybe only good once.
― goole, Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
"but thaaaat's my life!"
Wanted to post Neil's Jimmy Kimmel appearances here, but they're gone. These are great, though--love the wtf reaction from some members of the audience.

I enjoy Hamburger best in 7" form.
― the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)
Are you referring to Neil's Princess Di tribute 7", the b-side (I think) of which was a moment of silence and which came with a complimentary tissue should you feel too emotionally overwhelmed at the loss.
― to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
I saw him twice and he's much much funnier as an opening act. When he's doing shows by himself and like 95% of the crowd knows who he is, it really loses a lot.
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah Hamburger is best enjoyed in front of a hostile oblivious audience, like at the Faith No More reunion show I saw a few years back. God that was a beautiful thing.
I couldn't listen to him on an album I don't think -- you need the waves of boos and hollering washing over you
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
Ha - he opened at their show in NYC that I was at but I was really paying attention at that point.

― scott seward, Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
there's a great Maron episode with her -- it's a car trip to and from MaxFunCon a couple of years ago and just the recorded conversation of them chatting about whatever. it's really a great insight into how her comedy works and her history with guys espeically is O_O...it's great if you're not sure about her or on the fence. or if you already like her and want to like her more.
won't help if you don't like her and/or maron though, I don't think.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 19 July 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
Hamburger just seemed like post-funny Andy Kaufman w/out the wrestling. I tuned out early.
I like that guy less and less every time I interact with something outside his stage routine.
And there was your mistake.

Just listening to Not Sold Out now. Bill Hicks cast a long shadow, huh?
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)
Eh, not so much. The only similarities between Hicks and Maron imo is "loud, cranky white guy".
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)
And conspiracies, and willing to mock the audience for "hey, where's the funny gone", and hyperbolic rants abotu popular culture...
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 19 July 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
yeah there's definitely a fair amount of common ground, there, although maron generally has a different overall tone
