def want child-free cars on the trains

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

(that's actually a buncha stuff and not one piece, but in any case that site has everything you'd want)

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

Doesn't the G still have by far the lowest ridership?

Also why are there stops every 4 blocks on the 1 train and yet they can't build a single fucking station btwn Houston and 14th on the East side??

alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

14 blocks is an okay distance between stations. furthest someone would have to walk is like 1/3 a mile, and even then that's going to be rare - like 1/14 people. in return every single person who takes that train anywhere gets a faster trip. there is one abandoned station for the 1 train and one for the 6, in both cases cause they determined people could just walk from the next station. if the 1 were being built today it wouldn't look like it does but if they were built today they wouldn't be built instead of being built.

the g is always going to have the lowest ridership. people take the train to work and work is manhattan.

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

err to clarify 'takes that train' was a reference to the future-future 2nd avenue segment that will be built from houston to 14th on the east side. there won't be any other train / station in that area in our lifetimes, nor in alphabet city. maybe some crazy light-rail project if we pray.

also another thing worth remembering is that the 2nd and 3rd ave els provided service to that part of town back when the subways were being built. so when you're thinkin 'why is there nothing here', there was, it just went away.

also I realized there are other abandoned stations for the 6 train but in my head I was thinking only grid-manhattan

err I'm going to bed

you seem to be forgetting abt bleecker street and astor place on the 6

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

I think his implication was the area further east tho

My Elusive Memes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

Nothing to report

we should have a thread where we talk about nothing but the 7 train

There's a cool breeze blowing at Junction Blvd

skinny on the new buses

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 July 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

downside of G expansion: G clogs up the way of my F commutes, and I live a stop beyond the Church Ave terminus.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 July 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Was going to take the wtF train to Brooklyn but things are not looking good on that line so I'm crawled back to the surface and decided to stay in Queens

The Q!

Like Monk Never Happened (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

I am glad the straphangers campaign exists but this particular scoring metric is kinda eh, I mean of course the C trains breakdown the most, they are the oldest cars in the system and they are due to be replaced in a few years. complaining to the MTA won't make them break down less, it won't make them not-50-years-old. chance of getting a seat during rush hour is often due to fundamentals (the l is at capacity) and where you are (you can still get a seat on the l, it just helps if you live in carnasie). in general seat availability during rush hour is probably *a bad thing*. more trains should be added to the lines that are regularly completely packed, not to lines that are semi-full. and the 6 had the most scheduled service cause the lexington ave line is the busiest transit line in the country not because 'it's working better' or whatever. it would not make sense to switch the 6 and c schedules.

iatee, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

how far does the average subway car travel in an average day?

i only take the c if it comes before an a, but yeah those old cars like to throw everyone suddenly when starting.

mookieproof, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

idk the answer to that or if there really is one, but I'll look it up

TICKETS FOR DOUCHEBAGS WHO BRING BIKES ON RUSH-HOUR TRAINS

TICKETS, AND PREFERABLY JAIL

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

cosign. I'm also kind of annoyed with people who bring strollers at rush hour, even as a parent. Use a carrier or go at a different time. Or just fold the damn stroller and hold the kid's hand if he's old enough to walk. Particularly when I see two parents doing this together.

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

oh I guess you said that

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

last week i saw a cyclist, asleep, with his bike across five seats (in the corner of the car.)

I was so, so, so tempted to kick over his cycle as I exited but I held myself back.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

man I would be terrified of bringing a baby into the subway - would at least give them earplugs

smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

yeah bikes @ rush hour are 'not recommended' but I would be cool w/ a ban

strollers should just be illegal everywhere otoh

iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

Idk as a philly cyclist is it kind of frustrating to not be able to bring my bike on city trains btwn 3-6pm or suburban light rail systems btwn 4-6 regardless of how not-crowded the cars are.

the mandy moorhols (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I almost never need to but sometimes I am visiting family or trying to get home in a p dangerous storm

the mandy moorhols (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

well it might be frustrating but it's also frustrating to the 5 people who can't get onto a train because a bike is there

iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

wrt NYC at least

not-crowded commuter rail is another story

iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

i'm okay with it as long as the cyclist holds the bike over his (it's always a dude) head to save space

how common are the buses with bike racks on the front? i know they have them in dc and seattle

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

pretty common, but it wouldnt make sense in ny, they really slow things down

iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

tru

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

keep in mind that philly's subway is much much smaller (2 lines) so it's more understandable to want to bring a bike w/ you on the train

smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:58 (thirteen years ago)

otoh you can get a folding bike like this ^_^ wouldn't be any more objectionable than traveling on the subway with luggage

smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

ya I was gonna say people should all just get folding bikes or (soon) use bikeshare anyway

iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

I want everything I own to fold into something smaller

iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

Generally, ppl who bring a bike onto the A train at 9am are not worried about anyone else. This bespectacled young dbag didn't give a shit.

maybe we should stop letting wheelchair-ridden folks on the buses too

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

that is not really the same thing at all, is it

mookieproof, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

it's the same thing in that wheelchairs throw off bus schedules, it's not the same thing in that people don't choose to be in wheelchairs

iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

i'm just being a jerk. sorry.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

tonight it was a car that made a turn through the stop sign w/o stopping, so i am an equal-opportunity hater of assholes.
