And I think Tim & Eric excel at parodying awkward conversation/small talk cliches.

Has this board lost its fascination with hipsters? Tim & Eric's take on them has been out for like 10 months.

it was really sad. i felt a strange empathy toward swanson. even shed a solitary tear for the scene at the end, no lie. i have seen reviews criticizing that last scene but personally felt it to be very poignant and bittersweet.
i have a few heady ~~theories~~ or whatever about the movie and the swanson character. i think his sadness goes beyond his dying dad; i read a lot into the scenes with the sister-in-law. it just seems like there's sadness in the family (brother in the looney bin, AWOL mom) that has inspired the one remaining family member, the sister-in-law, to cope with deep numbness. and i think a lot of his interactions with people stem from frustration with that numbness. trying to open the sleeping girl's eyes - "wake up!". poking around the unconscious hospital patient. he spends so much time just trying to get reactions out of people. when he does those few rare times, he is at a loss, but i think that possibility really excites him.
i was also curious about the whole water thing in the movie. found it curious how so much of the movie is him being around water but not in it, which changes at the end. i know it seems facile to read such overt symbols into the movie but alverson by his own admission is a pretty deliberate director.
what was up with the random disintegration loops? and the random shot of the empire state building during the random disintegration loops scene? i didn't get how that fit in at all, apart from it being a sad tune for a sad movie.

"the comedy" was really great

saw it last night with jaymc and je55e. at the end some people in the theater applauded and i couldn't tell if it was sincere (we were in the "artsy" movie theater) or if people were consciously/unconsciously mimicking the theatrically ironic behavior they had just seen in the movie, it was very weird.

other thoughts:
* most disturbing sex scene in a movie in a while* heidecker is fantastic in this* scene in the black bar was the one that felt a little played-out, just a slightly more acidic/knowing version of "clueless white guy tries to buddy up with black dudes" scene from a bunch of other movies

though apparently mayhem lauren was one of the bar patrons

sorry, meyhem lauren
Mmm...was hoping I could wait to see this in my home because low $$$, but I love Heidecker and the reviews are eclipsing my good sense.

That's good info, but I have no cable or computer or credit card, so. And I'm back in Chicago so the actual theater is really the easiest way (he justified to himself).

― Evan, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 21:07 (eleven years ago) link
is it? I have heard such mixed things on it but I would guess that a lot of the negative reviews are from those who just don't like Tim & Eric style humor (which is a lot more understandable than people like me who do like it)

― Spectrum, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link
its not really tim and eric style humor, I think?
its basically a cross between the master and girls and ends up better than both, but then again I'm only like halfway thru it and its playing in the background as I type

Greg Turkington... I totally did not make the connection! Of course that's Neil Hamburger, right? He is so so reserved on "On Cinema, At The Cinema" I didn't even realize it.

Did anyone else watch Time & Eric's Bedtime Stories on Halloween? It was basically split into a really dumb, Three Stooges-inspired 'haunted house' skit co-starring Zach Galifianakis, followed by a "Talking Dead"-style 'Wrap Up Show' where they discussed the previous bit. It was inspired in places. Apparently it's the pilot for a regular Twilight Zone-esque series coming next year.
