WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

Fiona Apple is like a cross between a 5 year old and a...well I'm not quite sure yet what the other part is.

She doesn't even have to really elaborate on what her deeper issues are because you can feel them on the surface, in the tone of her voice and the way she talks...she's a really strange girl.

Endearing somehow, though. Maybe because I already like her music so I'm more inclined to hear her out. But man alive I dunno if I've encountered anyone who's THAT non-linear in just general conversation.

Odd episode, but also maybe one of my favorites? I dunno. Plenty to think about.

It was really interesting to me that she could be so discombobulate and then occasionally she could just take a quiet moment, gather her thought s and totally drive a point home so concisely.

she wasn't anything special, but i enjoy all but a very few of the WTF podcasts....the first few minutes of their convo is very "get a room you two"

jb smoove's hour long monologue was pretty great

New John Oliver interview is v enjoyable. Though I wanted to climb through my headphones and push Maron out of the way when Oliver casually says he befriended Richard Ayoade in his first year of Cambridge. "Okay that it I'm taking over this interview, Maron, I love you but you are BUFFOON"

it went by and Maron waited a few beats & said "should i know who he is" and Oliver said IT Crowd/submarine...it was just kinda shrugged off :(

well at least Maron mentioned the Bugle. I remember when Oliver was on the Nerdist and he brought up the Bugle the nerds had seemingly never heard of it.

I love how Oliver gamely attempts to steer off the Lorne thing, "I've not met Lorne, so...".

yeah that was pretty annoying

well Maron likes to stereotype people based on what city or country or ethnicity or religion they come from. witness all the talk about "hill people" on today's show. it's like he flies to these places, walks around for five minutes, decides everyone there is an anti-semite, tells his audience that night a bunch of half-formed impressions of their city.

he really does! when he was talking to jillian lauren, it was like he couldn't figure out who she was until she said "i'm a fucked up jewish girl from the suburbs" and he was like "ooooooh, now i get it." because she had finally conformed to a stereotype he was familiar with. It was funny, but probably not how he intended.

basically if someone is not from california or the northeast, his first question is "who lives there? it's not a real place, right?"

he's actually a p great example of why it's important for people to travel when they're younger

He's never been much of a road comic iirc, instead inhabiting whatever city he's lived in at the time (Boston, LA, NYC, SF). I mean, he tours a little bit, but he's not one of those road warrior comics.

And his international travel seems to have been limited to one trip to italy when he was young, then China ("Disorienting! They eat crazy shit!") UK/Edinburgh ("Terrible! They don't get me!") and Australia ("Pretty fun but too far from home"), when he was a 40something comic.

Seriously, it's a lesson in why smart people need to go to unfamiliar places when they're still young, to teach them something about caricature and perspective.

The way he hammered on about Hill People with Scovel was just stupid and embarrassing. Like, I know he plays it up to show what an ignoramus he is, but no one else gets a kick out of it but him! It normally doesn't annoy me AS much, but this time it really did.

fuckin hill people, of all things. cmon.

I'm just glad I'm not alone in noticing/being o_0 at this particularity in his interviewing style. Honestly can't even imagine what he made of Fiona Apple. Did she eat him for breakfast?

actually he was pretty good, and sympathetic to Fiona Apple.

that's the thing, Maron's not always 'Maron' with every subject. He has the capacity to be very senstive and insightful given the right subject matter. I think because of his bipolar dad he's pretty good with mental health, and knowing that Apple had that stage breakdown I think prepared him to handle her pretty carefully.

she didn't have to eat him for breakfast. she eventually came roaring to life towards the end and was pretty fascinating overall. it's worth a listen.

alright -- will do. i like her/find her more interesting as a person more than i like her music, i think, but i haven't listened to the new one. the others were not really to my liking that much.

also it should be known that i use the wtf podcast specifically to put me to sleep, esp when he won't stop talking about all those guys, guys this guys that blablabla. fast acting, and effective nonnarcotic insomnia treatment.
