anyone is welcome to go off and make a new gender issues thread or a rape jokes classic or dud thread but if anyone else comes in here and co-opts this thread for some kind of bitchy personal agenda I'm going to crack skulls

metaphorically

how I don't know but I'll figure it out

i stand by what i said kevin. it doesn't mean i condone Tosh's rape jokes, or his behaviour. but we'll just have to disagree on that. let's move on.

My life is nothing but pressure. All pressure. This pressure is like a heaviness. It’s always on top of me, this heaviness. It’s always there, since I was a kid. Other people wake up in the morning: "A new day! Ah, up and at ’em!" I wake up, the heaviness is waiting for me. Sometimes I even talk to it. I say "Hi, heaviness!" and the heaviness looks back at me: "Today you’re gonna get it good. You’ll be drinking early today."

Shakey, have you posted Rodney's most famous contribution to the genre of joke at hand?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 July 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

I think there's two jokes that qualify - I posted one of them. (the other is a bit more questionable, I think)

You really don't have to be the "different eye" though. I personally am not an android and thus I took Gukbe's statement to mean "they were both dumb for different reasons" If you really thought he was going for the "she deserved it" angle, wow dude just, whoa, wow, wow

xpost Goddamn I love Stewart Lee. And I really, truly love the way he can control the crowd by lowering his voice. It's brilliant.

Tosh fans continue to be unmitigated douchebags:

Karen Elson dared refer on Twitter to comedian Daniel Tosh's telling an audience member that it "would be really funny" if she "got raped by, like, five guys." The supermodel Tweeted, "Daniel Tosh didn't get the memo that it [rape] never was and never will be funny." Immediately, Tosh's army of enraged fans started Tweeting threats at Elson (see the example given at left). Elson took down the Tweet, but added, "Until you have walked in a woman's shoes and have to walk in a world where being sexually harassed is common you may understand my point...The replies I received mostly from young men were vile and only proved my point that rape isn't funny. I also think Daniel Tosh wouldn't want his fans to react this way."

I agree with both the Jezebel piece and the critique of it; the original piece makes a point using sweeping, reductive language which, for rhetorical purposes, removes valid viewpoints from the discussion before the meat of the argument is even discussed. This may be an attempt to frame the discussion, it may be intentional disagreement, it may be oversight; I view it as context positioning personally and, as such, it doesn't invalidate the argument presented as much as expose the filter through which the viewpoint is coming.

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Friday, 13 July 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

people are approaching this the wrong way when they complain that Tosh wasn't being very funny when he made his rape remark. He shouldn't have said what he said because it was wrong, and it sincerely frightened the woman in question. comedy is not just a tool for the underdog and it isn't an inherently benevolent concept. It's a weapon for the mob and bullies, too.

In other words, (this is turning into a pre-2007 lengthy post), comedy and laughter can be used for sadistic purposes and so to start making this a case of "guys it's not funny!!" is not only to be naive about comedy, but you're only encouraging more cruelty (because now people will find it funny to needle you further).

I think the problem is that some people, especially in comedy circles, don't want to come off as moralizing so they instead make this an aesthetic issue about what is and is not worthy of laughter. Tosh can't just be a jerk and that alone.

So my high school friend who performs as "Tammy Pescatelli" had an interaction with an audience member in Jacksonville, FL the other night; Tammy chided her for sitting in the front row and fucking around on her phone for the whole show, and after some back and forth which included the woman saying, "I'm not actually blonde" and Tammy replying, "No kidding! Who did you think you were fooling," the woman threw a full glass of wine at her head. Luckily she was able to duck, but despite a room full of people willing to make statements, police who were called to the show refused to arrest her. WTF?

Marco YOLO (Phil D.), Saturday, 14 July 2012 01:16 (thirteen years ago)

I'm filing this away in the always-growing file titled "Jacksonville Is A Shithole".

I have no idea what ad this is at all but that's one of my favorite Stewart Lee bits. "don't put any feelings into the pear"
I went on a pretty big pear cider bit because of it too because I wanted more opportunities to say "give it to me straight like a pear cider that's made from 100 percent pears." Also because I am highly suggestible and even a comedy bit about an ad campaign works like an ad for me, I really wanted some pear cider.

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Saturday, 14 July 2012 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

Pear cider is my drink of choice at this point. I get bummed when a bar doesn't offer it and I have to settle for beer or regular cider.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 July 2012 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

i have never been to a comedy club. apparently i am even more otm than i previously considered possible

If I ever return to standup after my 20+ year break, a la Paul Newman in The Color of Money, u r all invited.

This is clearly morally right, but I found it a hard principle to hew to when in the states.
