MSCL was, however fitfully, trying to depict real teenagers played (mostly) by teenagers.

I possibly had the same experience as Eric re: EW photo spreads. For me, it was the '93 Marky Mark profile, I'm not unashamed to admit.

That one was definitely in the mix. I seem to remember an Antonio Sabato, um, piece as well.

Don't remember that one, and my fam subscribed from about 92 on through most of the decade.

Was gonna amend my previous statement to something about watching The Pirate Movie and The Blue Lagoon a couple years prior to Marky Mark in EW, but that was more like just planting the seeds.

Not the point of the convo at all, but I always thought David Browne was a pretty great critic. Wonder where he writes now.

Don't like that Browne referred to Erotica as an iceberg. Or, rather, didn't like that he didn't get that that was partly the point.

My bf always hated EW solely because of that Erotica review (his favorite album). What's funny is that around 93-94 Browne wrote a piece where he revisited some of his older opinions and he talks about how he now realized how much he underrated that particular record.

tbh i underrated it at the time of its release too

No pics online of the shirtless college boys who cut my apartment complex's lawn in the mid '70s, alas.

that EW "Legends" issue from summer '93 was responsible for my discovering a bunch of film classics.

There was a top 50 directors issue a year or two later that actually really kicked off my film school period.

And I'm sure I also took their pic of Alfred Hitchcock with me into the bathroom.

Um. I'm more sporadic than I used to be, but I think I still contribute (in)frequently enough to count. Plus, even when I'm too lazy to write, I put in time curating tracks for review (aka forcing everyone to listen to Marianas Trench and other Canadian chartpop). Alfred may never forgive me.

I didn't review the Mariana's Trench track, but I didn't dislike it either.

Marianas Trench was just serving as metonymy for CanCon generally. Insert Mia Martina and/or My Name is Kay and/or Danny Fernandes and/or um... whoever...

Also, glad youre repping for Canadian chart pop cause I like reviewing even the stuff I hate, though that's generally because by the time it makes it to the jukebox I've heard it so many times that I'm ready to vent (see that awful Heart quoting thing from earlier in the year...Alyssa Reid I believe her name was).

In a Chicago leather bar last week, some DJ was playing Weezer and Dave Edmunds while porn was on the TVs. Very disjunctive.
