I kind of wanted to call it the Sister Ray of stand up or something, but that would go far in betraying my own ignorance in the history of stand up/comedy records

I like this Kyle Kinane takedown too, though it's not anywhere near as fiery

I love that kinane takedown. It's not as visceral or angry as Burr, but it has that same amazing freeform flow where it almost feels like a worked out bit.

Kinane's awesome live, I would go see him anywhere.

Film critic RogerEbert.com editor Jim Emerson has harsh words for ILX:
Now, I know some people (including comedians) say there's nothing worse than analyzing humor, that nothing is more harmful to a joke than picking it apart to see how it works. Those people are wrong. And stupid. Nobody who has any respect for comedy would say that. What kills humor is not being funny. Show me a joke that can't stand scrutiny, and I'll show you a hacky joke. The better the joke, the more examination it welcomes and rewards.

I did like this book, Stop Me If You've Heard This: A History and Philosophy of Jokes by Jim Holt http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1256057588l/3360940.jpgBecause it's actually pretty funny.

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 July 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)
ok, i laughed at this
Let's hope that writers, editors, and producers of Brickleberry can help Tosh out of his rape pickle and find a way to de-rape the show. Otherwise, the jokes may have to be reinserted, repeatedly, and without Daniel Tosh's consent.
― frogbs, Friday, 13 July 2012 15:21 (thirteen years ago)
if all of the rape jokes or references to rape were removed, the show would be only a couple of minutes long and mostly feature stills of the animated characters not talking.

well i mean it's not my battle to fight exactly and other posters like WCC and laurel are much better equipped and do admirable work, but the derail from what tosh actually said - which is obviously indefensible and is essentially sexual harassment, i would hope everyone on this board agrees (notwithstanding gukbe's concern-trolly "well she should have known her place and stayed quiet, she basically ASKED for it") - to whether rape jokes that make victims the butt of jokes are ever acceptable are funny was nothing more than a clever rhetorical trick. they're not acceptable; they're oppressive and facilitate rape culture. being a stand-up comic does not give you license to be a shitty human being, and anyone with any amount of self-respect should have the right to call that out. that jezebel article about rape jokes was otm - rape is something that can be joked about but it has to be done in a way that isn't oppressive - you're either an ally or you're not, it's pretty simple
― k3vin k., Friday, 13 July 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)
k3vin honest question--what did youthink of the other Tosh.0 rape joke posted above (I think by skot..?) the practical joke one? do you think it is less, idk, oppressive?
― warring hardens (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)
"well she should have known her place and stayed quiet, she basically ASKED for it"
fuck you buddy i was just saying there's a way to comport yourself. She didn't deserve that and she wasn't asking for it, but there's a time and a place to engage in that conversation and that wasn't it.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Friday, 13 July 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
I'm all for discussion of the issues surrounding this whole Tosh blowup but I'm NOT for anyone putting words into the mouth of anyone expressing an opinion on it, which is pretty much exactly what has happenede every time this conversation gets anywhere close to being adult.
so either we can talk about it and really talk about it, or we can't because we're children and we can't have nice things.
and it hasn't escaped my notice that half the ppl who are joining this thread to watch the clusterfuck or pick through the aftermath or join the conversation have never heard or seen Tosh anyway...which, honestly...lucky you

look, you're creating some artificial structure here (the holy comic on his holy stage, where he is not to be disturbed) by which the woman's human feelings and right to express the hurt she feels are secondary to the rights of her oppressor. those may be your priorities but they aren't mine.
― k3vin k., Friday, 13 July 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
Ah, well I'm glad that viewpoints different from yours are just "concern trolling".
This is basically what I was talking about:
If it’s a comedy club, the contract is the person’s going to get on stage and explore comedy however they see that comedy is. And the contract for the audience member is to come and see that, and you don’t get a guarantee it’s going to make you laugh, but the comedian is going to attempt to make you laugh. But if they’re not attempting to do material, and the article made [it seem like Tosh was discussing concepts rather than telling jokes]…A comic should have the freedom to go on stage and say whatever they want. The only control you have is what passes your lips. After, you’re saying “I’ve passed this up to be judged.” Everyone else gets to decide whether it’s funny…all the comics say don’t laugh or leave. Those are your options as an audience member. The bigger discussion for me, is if someone walks into a comedy club and gets a lecture about what’s funny or not funny, has that comedian broken the social contract? That’s the question that I would ask because I don’t have any information about the context he was talking about it. It’s all very confusing. The whole thing, we’re talking about so many issues of what people get away with and what they don’t, and at the end of the day, if you’re going to do material that pushes boundaries, you better be fucking funny and know the purpose of why you’re saying those things.

i don't think some people itt know the difference shakes, or care to discern. i know you do and can
― k3vin k., Friday, 13 July 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
gukbe, this is what you said fwiw:
but idk, i see it as "moron girl acts out of order at Daniel Tosh gig, moron Daniel TOsh responds way fucking out of order." so i can't really feel a lot of sympathy.
not knowing the difference and asking the question/steering the conversation that way are two separate things tho. if you want to call out people for being pro-rape-culture-jokes then just do so, no need to be coy about it.
― the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 July 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
