the whole grandpa with aphasia thing was really weird to me because it happened months after my grandmother suffered the same thing

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:02 (thirteen years ago)

that actually makes more sense, i always thought it was alzheimers

lag∞n, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:03 (thirteen years ago)

I want Abbott's thing to be true; I like gags that resurface subtly

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

man no I am pretty sure I am not making that up

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

I'll admit more than anyone things can mutate in memory but I'm holding onto this one

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

it just doesnt seem possible

lag∞n, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

i would like it to be true

lag∞n, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

this will end up with me like Henry Darger, who made that giant novel in part because of a newspaper clipping he couldn't ever relocate, about a kidnapped baby

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:09 (thirteen years ago)

i don't see how Abbott's memory is implausible?

some dude, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:10 (thirteen years ago)

I was thinking today of the very first time I went to a business conference (where my employer flew me there and everything) – I was 22, and I had stupider ideas about boundaries/professionalism/etc, meaning I had basically no ideas about those things. They had us start out with '2 truths and a lie,' with everyone sharing to everyone in the room (~30 older and less inane people) and I said:
• My parents had an ostrich farm
• I wasn't born with a sense of smell
and because I knew those are outrageous I chose an obvious lie
• I have touched a unicorn
But when they were asked to guess the lie NO ONE guessed the unicorn one. When I had to reveal the lie I said, "The lie was that I touched a unicorn. [pause] Only a virgin can touch a unicorn." And the reaction was some of the worst, most palpably awkward silence...god. I have learned my lesson about being more bland with strangers but I still feel like I could never be put in front of a business conference.

the po-facedness of managerial movers and shakers is a constant sadness to me

sorry i'm tumblr white (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 July 2012 08:34 (thirteen years ago)

constant delight to me tbh

i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Friday, 13 July 2012 09:05 (thirteen years ago)

well, depends on yr mood. it's not like i ever want to "rise" to managerial level but knowing that i'm too flip for it to ever happen irks a little bit. dunno why. something about Kafka being a painfully accurate observer of organisations or something.

sorry i'm tumblr white (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 July 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

also after managing to find a corner to hide in for a few years i'm getting more exposed to the bracing crosswinds of office politics lately and oh god what is wrong with people?

sorry i'm tumblr white (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 July 2012 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

they want not to have to care about office politics, ie scrabble ahead

i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Friday, 13 July 2012 09:58 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno man, the big dogs seem to be just as scrappy from what i've seen.

lol "shitting up" the "lols" thread

sorry i'm tumblr white (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 July 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

i'd rather be scrappy on the richer side tbh, but how to get there while maintaining a four-hour per day ilx presence? big questions, nobody comin up with anythin for me

ps lols thread w&t shot at this stage imo

i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Friday, 13 July 2012 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i know hence square quotes

Wasn't there a FBOFW where Liz was calling April a "retard" and her mom tells her to knock it off so she starts calling April a Boxcar instead? Last panel is Liz saying BOXCAR BOXCAR BOXCAR while April cries.

hahahaha there may have been a time in the BOXCAR era of ILX when I was splicing grandpa's BOXCAR rant into a lot of other FBOFW comics.

btw this is the second time this week i have seen someone use the phrase "square quotes" on ilx. they are called "scare quotes." not "square quotes."

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 July 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

But for all intensive purposes, you know what they're talking about.

The editorial staff I work with has this bad habit of using smart-quotes on their word processing software. When their stories get published online, those smart-quotes turn into little diamonds and question marks. I send out a reminder email about every six weeks, telling them to turn that shit off, but they never do.

Maybe I should call regular punctuation "square quotes" and they'll get the idea of what I'm talking about.

pplains, Friday, 13 July 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

I think most intelligent publishing software recognized some time ago that people copy and paste from Word prodigiously and fix that shit

No, Morbs is right. However, it's easy to look back on a grammatical mistake when hindsight's 50/50.

Pretty sure that sentence requires punctuation at the end.
