Hicks and Kinison and Stanhope are some of least favorite comics, so it doesn't surprise me that if you like one you'll probably at least have an ear open for all three.

xp I don't think the Onion thing was intended to be funny at all. "DO U SEE WHY THIS ISNT FUNNY DO U SEE" is otm.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 July 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not much of a Kinison fan, not really a Stanhope fan, but I'm a big Hicks fan. There's a little Hicks in Stanhope but I feel like that's almost giving him too much rope.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

i was never a kinison fan. kinison just ripped off hicks wholesale. i like hicks but i'm not a superfan and he could definitely be annoying/way too smug for this world. i don't know stanhope at all. until tonight! i mean i might have seen him on t.v. but i don't remember.

scott seward, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

or wait hicks and sam were pals before either one of them hit it big, right? maybe they ripped each other off. dennis leary, now he stole everything from hicks, right?

scott seward, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:12 (thirteen years ago)

that sounds right

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:16 (thirteen years ago)

Hicks and Kinison knocked around in the early days in Texas, with that workshop group Kinison was part of, the outlaw something or other.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

Kinison is awful. I liked in a Hate comic once when Peter Bagge called him "the male Andrea Dworkin."

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

Ha!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

I can't even get through his stuff because his PRESENTATION is so shrill. Like Hicks is bad enough in that department. I am down with music that tries actively to sonically repel me but not comedy.

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

Watching the Kinison stuff from the height of his fame is just...the coke sweat, the chicks in bikinis, the flashpots it's just kinda gross.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:20 (thirteen years ago)

Kinison's behind-the-curtain evangelical routine was really good - I think if his material/outlook had been decent that shrill style would have been great. But instead yeah basically a meaner Porky's.

perry en concrète (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

i always forget that sam actually died before bill hicks! i just looked that up. weird. i always think its the other way around.

scott seward, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

I tried to watch some special of it and the first 7 minutes were iirc
I used to be a preacher but now women are WHIIIIIIIIIIIIINE SCREEECH EE-YAW WW-YAW DING DING DING AWOOGA AYAYAYAYAYAYA

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)

i remember watching Comedy Central, possibly when it was still called Ha! The Comedy Channel, the night Kinison died, and they had someone in the network's office sit in front of a camera and awkwardly explain what happened because clearly they were not anticipating ever having to cut into a broadcast with breaking comedy news

I remember hearing about it on the news one night, and then the following night Inside Edition or A Current Affair or whatever dedicated a whole episode to his life and death and the whole time I was thinking "what an asshole".

thats amazing

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

I remember the HA! days, though not that specific incident. I do remember they had people working the red carpets at movie premieres though on some kind of nightly?/weekly? round-up show and it was terrible. Get off my screen and bring back my George Carlin HBO special reairings!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

i literally just looked up the specifics of the car crash Kinison died in and realized that he was not in a limo when he died and that i was possibly confusing him with Pizza The Hut

what is going on

some dude, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:43 (thirteen years ago)

Maron has some good Kinison stories. The podcast with Kinison's brother Bill was pretty eyeopening.
Dude must've been a cokedoutpsychonightmare to be around.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

Ha! was not the same as proto-Comedy Centra;? I thought Ha! was some MTV offshoot and CC was some HBO offshoot.

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

'proto-Comedy Central' obvs. I remember being under the impression that they were competitors. Of course Ha! lost.

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

holy shit canks, that clip is great

i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:47 (thirteen years ago)

I can't listen to maron anymore. He annoys the shit out of me.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:47 (thirteen years ago)

Comedy Central was the result of a merger between Ha! and Comedy Channel apparently

some dude, Friday, 13 July 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

CC is a Viacom property now I'm pretty sure

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

oh my bad xp

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

that Bill Burr clip is incredible

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:01 (thirteen years ago)

I can't listen to maron anymore. He annoys the shit out of me.

That's cool, whatever. I'd argue, though, that he's way less neurotic now than when WTF began its run. And definitely less so than when he was on Air America.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

i really have to say, the new Doug Stanhope CD, Before He Turned the Gun On Himself is a bunch of libertarian jibber-jabber i dont agree with for one second; but it's seriously one of the most vicious, passionate comedy CDs I've heard in forever. If you're not one of those dopes that has to believe like everything a comic says SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO ME MAN, you should really check it out asap.

calum-y maybe (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

it's a great performance, but it also accurately reflects how I feel about philly, so it's great in multiple ways.

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

its in salt lake city?

calum-y maybe (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

I wasn't talking about Douglas Stanhope

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of feel like I should check out STANHOPE but only because he lives in Bisbee – which is not enough to balance out the fact that he generally seems repellant. From interviews.

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

The stuff on the record is totally repellant, which doesnt mean its not an awesome comedy record, which it is

calum-y maybe (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:07 (thirteen years ago)

that is not very persuasive

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

OTOH I don't expect you to have a lo0t of info on the most persuasive part (Bisbee)
Got to give him props for actually perofrming in AZ post-SB1070; probably helps that he lives in Bisbee

Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

many xposts: canks otm i fucking LOVE that Burr takedown. genius.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:14 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of wanted to call it the Sister Ray of stand up or something, but that would go far in betraying my own ignorance in the history of stand up/comedy records

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:20 (thirteen years ago)

I like this Kyle Kinane takedown too, though it's not anywhere near as fiery

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOfPT48giJw

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

I love that kinane takedown. It's not as visceral or angry as Burr, but it has that same amazing freeform flow where it almost feels like a worked out bit.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:55 (thirteen years ago)

Kinane's awesome live, I would go see him anywhere.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 05:56 (thirteen years ago)

The bit when Burr starts in on the Flyers in that clip is amazing.

pandemic, Friday, 13 July 2012 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

his takedown re imaginary rocky vs real joe frazier hits hard
