Rolling Stand-Up Comedy 2012

i actually watched a full tosh.o episode this week bc i wanted to see if he'd address what happened (someone at the end of the episode threw bags at him and shouted that he was bad - i assume that was a response to the hullabaloo). at some point he told a joke about black ppl. i don't remember exactly what the particular racist implication was but after he said it he grinned and said, "it's funny because it's racist."

netflix should just do those shows djp

I hate it when guests acknowledge the character at some point in the interview. Stephen always shoots them an "eat shit" look.

that totally ruins the interview; however it is kind of funny when Bill O'Reilly tries to do it as Stephen either doesn't acknowledge it or turns it back on O'Reilly. The Colbert/O'Reilly interviews are incredible

I'm not gonna suffer through hours of his shit searching desperately for the pearls. Fifteen minutes on a variety of subjects (Katrina, Demi and Ashton, gays, women) is enough to safely say I don't find him remotely funny. Not because he "goes there." Because I don't find him funny.

That's fine, but it's kind of like saying "I watched 15 minutes of Chappelle's show, so I can say that literally the only thing he ever talks about is race, and everything you hear from him is a variant on that"

I mean you're not completely wrong on him and I do seem to like him less every year, but there's a lot of good self-aware stuff on there too, and he's not as predictable as you guys are making him out to be

also Mordy IIRC this airs on Tuesdays so I don't think he's had time to respond to it; if he has a response to it it'll probably be on this week's episode

you really have to watch a tv show for like 30 hours to hate it authoritatively, so you should watch every tv show for at least 30 hours

I'm rmde pretty hard about mordy not wanting to click on a jezebel article because humorless feminists obv, when the article is actually funny, is ABOUT a kind of humor that we can all agree is offensive, and in itself makes a joke about "cunty feminist killjoy(s)." I got lost in the layers of that somewhere but...really?

ok, i read it but let's not get too excited. i didn't LAUGH OUT LOUD. Jezebel is fine and I read it frequently but they don't exactly bring the funny. which is okay. they're not a comedy website.

i did read that author's review of SATC2 when it came out and i enjoyed it. do i need to say it was a funny article bc it made some good points?

i'm pretty sure i have laughed at every wrong/taboo/etc subject there is to talk about when it comes to comedy. think i mentioned this on ilx somewhere but someone sold me a bunch of old national lampoons from the 70s and i hadn't looked at them in years - i read them all the time when i was a kid - and most "edgy" modern comedy doesn't come close to how fitlhy/horrible/wrong/racist/sexist those magazines are. tosh doesn't come anywhere near them. he's a choirboy in comparison. you could never get away with a magazine like that now unless it was a porn mag that nobody reads like hustler or something. i used to buy them all the time when i was like 11 and 12!

and now john hughes and pj o'rourke are revered elder statesmen, right? well, sorta.

that magazine was staffed with snooty smug white dudes who loved to "shock" and basically didn't care who they offended.

What you should really do is NOT say, I'm not going to read that article on a feminist site because what do feminists/women know about humor amirite? And then everyone else should not be like "Oh that's cool dude but it actually IS funny. I know, isn't that amazing?"

like, without those unresolved feelings maybe u could assume my comment came from a place of having read jezebel for years now and having an intimate familiarity with their tone + style and nothing to do with whether they're 'feminist' or not. but bc you're waiting to show the world how i'm a terrible person hiding behind a cloak of words, you run in before there's anything to torch and start freestyling what my posts mean. if you have a problem w/ me i think you should just be honest about it instead of trying to get these little digs in. they're WAY beneath you.

Look on the bright side, at least you havent been tagged with the "fucking prostitutes" thing for five years. So you have that going for you.

I have historically disliked more Jezebel articles than I have liked and it's down to writing style and tone. Not clicking a jezebel link is reasonable and not necessarily anti-feminist imo.

Laurel, I just webmailed you. We can talk about WCC off-board if you want. I'd rather not add fuel to that fire. Suffice it to say here that I have nothing personal against k8 and at some points I've even stepped up to defend her. It happens that we fell on different sides of a particular topic on a particular thread, but I'm not giving off a 'bad vibe,' certainly not intentionally, and my tone may sound nasty, but it's intended to be blunt and direct.

And sorry, Jezebel is a lot of things, some of them awesome, but it is rarely funny. (Gawker too for that matter. I find that snide snark tone to be the opposite of funny.)

Phil, my experience of arguing with you on ilx is that you misunderstand what I write, or willfully ignore the point I'm trying to make, and that it is a frustrating experience talking to you. It has nothing to do with the particular topics: the bible, feminism, comedy, transexualism. It's about your style of discussion. Laurel too, tho to a lesser extent. I disagree with people on ilx a lot, and have since I got here. But when my experience of you is that you don't give what I'm saying a fair hearing, and then I see you attack something I say on a new thread, I'm much more inclined to brush you off than explain myself or engage. (Though even that clearly isn't true - see this thread where I'm obviously engaging in the critique, even though I think Laurel's comment, and the one you wanted to make, misrepresented what I was saying in order to make me look anti-feminist. Why? To score signaling points I guess.)

Jezebel is terrible and frequently offensive. I also don't think it's ever made me laugh? It was better with Mo.

That could be. It's not my experience in 99% of my experiences on ILX, however, if you feel I'm not expressing myself very well, you may be comforted to know that I'm always trying to communicate better and more effectively. xp

Okay so Mordy, I have noticed you being off on women's ish topics lately, and it kind of built up and has changed how I feel about you, definitely. But partly because I didn't expect that from you before? So, new world, whatever.

But also in the context of rape jokes and feminism and the outcry about this thing, it is actually not about you? This thread, OR my anger--they are not about YOU. It's about how horrible rape is, and rape jokes are, and people who make them are, and that, ad infinitum. IN THAT CONTEXT, it would be really trust-building and -reinforcing if a thread full of men, and there are hardly any women anywhere in this whole discussion (I see that veg g threw down for a second yesterday), could be minimally sensitive about it? It's actually not enough just to agree that rape jokes are bad or whatever, that's the MINIMUM here.
