Dice would literally pick fistfights with people in the audience, which I always found amusing

What if "Hitler" was just a character.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i just meant he doesn't mind being taken seriously as a political commentator until there's a flap and then he's just an entertainer or whatnot so ppl shouldn't take him seriously.

is there any way that isn't the worst possible analogy

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

No, is it a satire of bad analogies.

what kind of ridiculous question is this? I don't know Colbert, I have no way of gauging whether this is true or not (and frankly, neither do you), but what's more I don't think there's any empirical evidence for sustained improvisation resulting in a permanent personality changes. the assertion is nonsensical.
I've read profiles of Colbert that claim that "it's hard to know when he's in character nowadays". It's really incredible how fast he's able to improvise during some of his interviews - I would think that's a result of how his last decade of news-watching has all boiled down to "how would my character interpret this?" And I guess I'm finding it tough to believe that it doesn't affect his IRL persona a bit. Obviously just speculation but acts like his (and Tosh, and Dice, and Neil Hamburger etc.) always seem to start very satirical and cartoonish but begin to feel, I dunno, differently over time? Maybe it's a product of social media and the 24/7 entertainment cycle where these guys think "I pretty much have to be in character all the time"?

just out of sheer pro-colbertism, this is contrary to what i've read of him; it's always that he's the kinda downhome quiet NJ dad who's very mild, who turns on the thundering conservative at will. & i think his improvisational skills are a whole other thing!

a small update to the story, up to you if you believe this or not (frankly, neither account really feels reliable): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/10/daniel-tosh-rape-joke-laugh-factory_n_1662882.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainment&ir=Entertainment

"Daniel came in, and he said, 'Well it sounds like she’s been raped by five guys' — something like that. I really didn’t hear properly."

definitive

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

as I said, that's a definitive account

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

Specifically, he’s told some rape jokes. In each case, if I squinted, I could read them as rape culture jokes

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

why the fuck did i scroll down????

"That offends me" is basically saying "I can't control my emotions, so I want the rest of you to do it for me." I hope she does get raped. That would be some quality karmic/comedic justice.

If you're going to a Tosh performance without knowing his brand of humor then you get what you deserve. If you're going to a Tosh performance knowing full well his brand of humor and you're offended anyway, then you're too thin-skinned to be there in the first place.

This girl was 100% asking for it by interrupting Tosh at work

A shrew looking/begging for her 15 minutes!

yeah

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

even Tosh himself admits this

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

Few things make me as IA as people who feel the need to dictate when its acceptable for other people to be offended or not.

‏@DougStanhope
' @danieltosh You're hilarious. If you ever apologize to a heckler again I will rape you. #FuckThatPig

polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

Those commenters are assholes, to be sure, and I'm going to give the offended audience member the benefit of the doubt and assume she didn't know anything about Tosh when she went in, but I think she or anyone absolutely has the right to be offended (and in this case, probably should be offended) but I don't think that means she should have spoken up during the set. Comedian seem very defensive about the stand up v heckler culture.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

I'm devastated to learn that Doug Stanhope thinks Daniel Tosh is hilarious. :/

polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

that's not to excuse Tosh's handling of the situation at all, btw.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

this daniel tosh rape joke thing is funny because, like, now who's gonna be the national representative of west hollywood?

more from the commentariat: well what shocks me is that a bitchy homosexual would say something that demeans women.

Cunga, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

how big is this outside of the internet? I still watched tv when the Michael Richards thing happened. Obv not that that level but is it being covered?

Cunga, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

I only pay attention to the internet so idk

straight up now tell me will I be a fucking lump forever? (some dude), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

ugh Stanhope

I haven't checked twitter since yesterday, but it seems all of the comedians defending Tosh are likewise complete douchebags (I still don't call Louis's tweet a "defense").

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

I listened to that Todd Glass/Paul F. Tompkins discussion linked to upthread and the biggest takeaway is "Comedy is not a blanket, and whether or not a joke or topic is offensive CAN BE assessed on a case-by-case basis."

In this case, Daniel Tosh went too far and I don't believe anything the manager of The Laugh Factory has to say because his primary goal is to keep patrons coming.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think it's fair to call all the comedians defending Tosh douchebags. They're defending his right to deal with a heckler, which I think is pretty important to comics.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

Stanhope also tried to take credit for the "comedian who forces women to watch him beat off" thing as well

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

Stanhope and those guys kinda wear the right to say that shit as a badge of honor, they're like NRA crazies ranting about the 2nd amendment.

I'm sure Jim Jeffries sent Tosh a fruit basket.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

aren't you saying that he should be "raped-by-10 guys angry if not 14 or 17"

the whole outpouring of support from disgruntled comics on twitter proves for the millionth time that standup comics are sort of the most sensitive crybabies in the world (bcz irony)
