the thing about this situation is that I can see exactly where his original joke that drew the heckle is trying to go but he basically went to the most horrible, unacceptable place he could go to deal with the heckle short of physically assaulting this woman
so yeah, Tosh is a dick, no sympathy

I don't think you grasp the difference between playing a character in a weekly play or TV show and playing that character for a good portion of your waking life

JFC I think Gawker commenters are now reaching sub-YouTube levels of odiousness, like the guy calling the original girl an "uppity broad".

colbert and dice just do not seem comparable
not that i've witnessed much dice beyond spare yt clips but he's always struck me as a dude who put on a character as an excuse to do all the awful shit he had festering in him. the colbert character is clearly satirical all the time and he's always a little bit on the verge of cracking up, no way he goes olivier in his old age

I think in general when comedians get heckled it activates a rush of panic and adrenaline and their instinct is to destroy the person immediately because if they start to relent or stall for time, it ruins the show in a way. The heckler scene in Louie is a great portrayal of this - many people in that thread said "the woman deserved it" and maybe she did, but Louie's mixture of increasingly cruel, badly formed jokes felt like it was losing the audience, and I think comedians fear this a lot. They think "what is the most vile and mean-spirited thing I can say to this person right now", and some comedians choose really poorly (Michael Richards and Tracy Morgan are good examples). I feel like if Tosh had, like, a second to think about his response, he would have known it was a bad idea to say what he did. The fact that he apologized (sort of) for this is at least something; he doesn't really apologize for anything otherwise. His bit was about how you can derive humor from really dark places, not just "lol rape".

so far the only reasonable thing frogbs has said in this thread was where he equated handling hecklers with making free throws
― the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
the efficacy of the "humor comes from dark places" defense really depends on whose suffering you're making light of imho.

"rape is always funny" - ugh

early Dice was also pretty clearly satirical. I don't think the awful shit started festering in him until his career started to go downhill
― frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
well Tosh is an idiot, but that's kind of a given, right? there are always going to be shitty, stupid lowest-common-denominator (in a bad way) comics trying to SHOCK people, and stupid people will think it's really audacious and hilarious but they're really just stupid. What's new, here?

what kind of ridiculous question is this? I don't know Colbert, I have no way of gauging whether this is true or not (and frankly, neither do you), but what's more I don't think there's any empirical evidence for sustained improvisation resulting in a permanent personality changes. the assertion is nonsensical.
― the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)
fwiw I've read personality profiles of Colbert in the NYT and elsewhere and dude seems perfectly well-adjusted
― the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)
of course that could all be PART OF THE ACT
where was i reading an interview - maybe with louis - where at some clubs (maybe this was boston) comics would study the exits and the route to their car so that they could get out as fast as possible and not meet up with drunk people in the parking lot. the kind of clubs where you could get beat up for having a bad night or bombing.

I can imagine there've been actors, possibly including comedians, who have grown into their characters or gone native in some way, I'm just not sure why you'd single out Colbert in that regard

I've read profiles of Colbert that claim that "it's hard to know when he's in character nowadays". It's really incredible how fast he's able to improvise during some of his interviews - I would think that's a result of how his last decade of news-watching has all boiled down to "how would my character interpret this?" And I guess I'm finding it tough to believe that it doesn't affect his IRL persona a bit. Obviously just speculation but acts like his (and Tosh, and Dice, and Neil Hamburger etc.) always seem to start very satirical and cartoonish but begin to feel, I dunno, differently over time? Maybe it's a product of social media and the 24/7 entertainment cycle where these guys think "I pretty much have to be in character all the time"?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)
this is pretty standard Bostonite behavior
I've read profiles of Colbert that claim that "it's hard to know when he's in character nowadays"
do you realize there's a huge gulf between other people not always being able to tell when he's in character (which is basically one of the necessary functions of the act) and Colbert himself losing the ability to make the distinction?
― straight up now tell me will I be a fucking lump forever? (some dude), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
why is this character matter under discussion, please? is anyone asserting that tosh's offstage identity has any relevance to what he said onstage?
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
This isn't the rolling Daniel Tosh thread.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)
possible origin:
T/S: a comedian playing an easily distinguishable character (ala Stephen Colbert) vs. a comedian whose offstage demeanour is completely indistinguishable from their performances but pulls out the "playing a character" defense when called on saying some offensive shit

I've read early interviews with Tosh (as of 3-4 years ago) and he came off as being a pretty nice and gracious guy, I just think that spending years with a mentality of "people are expecting me to be offensive, so how can I push the line even further today" can eventually lead to saying something that really does push the line in a bad way because he's not able to separate himself from the character quickly enough.
