frogs otm in this thread

I really, really think you want to qualify this post.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

Just curious, if you flag post the same user for different posts on the same thread, does it count?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think so

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

Let's all just focus on flagging the obvious one here guys.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know why flag post even exists since it has no effect.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

well, i can't really remember specifics now and i don't feel like scrolling up, but i think he's operating in generally reasonable areas.

but idk, i see it as "moron girl acts out of order at Daniel Tosh gig, moron Daniel TOsh responds way fucking out of order." so i can't really feel a lot of sympathy.

towards the end of his life, Olivier thought he actually WAS Hamlet

that's not really a good analogy at all. guys like Colbert and Dice are consistantly writing for themselves, doing interviews "in character", and being forced to improvise and get inside their character's mindspace. you can see how their material changes over time.

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

this whole schtick is out of order

I don't think you really grasp the concept/practice of "acting"

xp Nah it's alright Gukbe leapt in front of that particular bullet

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

the thing about this situation is that I can see exactly where his original joke that drew the heckle is trying to go but he basically went to the most horrible, unacceptable place he could go to deal with the heckle short of physically assaulting this woman

so yeah, Tosh is a dick, no sympathy

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think you really grasp the concept/practice of "acting"

I don't think you grasp the difference between playing a character in a weekly play or TV show and playing that character for a good portion of your waking life

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

JFC I think Gawker commenters are now reaching sub-YouTube levels of odiousness, like the guy calling the original girl an "uppity broad".

whoa, i didn't know she was black

Just to remind everyone which one to flag post and to show Gubke where he might want to distance himself from frogs.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

to be fair that was a dig at you guys

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

colbert and dice just do not seem comparable

not that i've witnessed much dice beyond spare yt clips but he's always struck me as a dude who put on a character as an excuse to do all the awful shit he had festering in him. the colbert character is clearly satirical all the time and he's always a little bit on the verge of cracking up, no way he goes olivier in his old age

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i just sort of skimmed all that but

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs is just playing a character

to be fair that was a dig at you guys

appreciate that

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Always a good look to be racist in order to get in a dig at someone.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

that was seriously a dig at people mentioning the 100% true fact that 'uppity' is often racially loaded

frogs please don't start doing standup

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs in the cut, that's a scary sight

I think in general when comedians get heckled it activates a rush of panic and adrenaline and their instinct is to destroy the person immediately because if they start to relent or stall for time, it ruins the show in a way. The heckler scene in Louie is a great portrayal of this - many people in that thread said "the woman deserved it" and maybe she did, but Louie's mixture of increasingly cruel, badly formed jokes felt like it was losing the audience, and I think comedians fear this a lot. They think "what is the most vile and mean-spirited thing I can say to this person right now", and some comedians choose really poorly (Michael Richards and Tracy Morgan are good examples). I feel like if Tosh had, like, a second to think about his response, he would have known it was a bad idea to say what he did. The fact that he apologized (sort of) for this is at least something; he doesn't really apologize for anything otherwise. His bit was about how you can derive humor from really dark places, not just "lol rape".

this is pretty reasonable

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

so far the only reasonable thing frogbs has said in this thread was where he equated handling hecklers with making free throws

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

the efficacy of the "humor comes from dark places" defense really depends on whose suffering you're making light of imho.

"here's funny jokes about dark, painful shit i've confronted in my life" - ok

"rape is always funny" - ugh

early Dice was also pretty clearly satirical. I don't think the awful shit started festering in him until his career started to go downhill

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)

well Tosh is an idiot, but that's kind of a given, right? there are always going to be shitty, stupid lowest-common-denominator (in a bad way) comics trying to SHOCK people, and stupid people will think it's really audacious and hilarious but they're really just stupid. What's new, here?

btw Bobcat has some standup DVD out w/ the title You Don't Look the Same Either.

Tosh is not an idiot, but then again neither is George W Bush. Thinking they are just makes it easier for people.

Shakey, you really dont think that Colbert constantly playing the same character and writing new material for him over the last TEN YEARS has affected his personality at all?

Shakey, you really dont think that Colbert constantly playing the same character and writing new material for him over the last TEN YEARS has affected his personality at all?

what kind of ridiculous question is this? I don't know Colbert, I have no way of gauging whether this is true or not (and frankly, neither do you), but what's more I don't think there's any empirical evidence for sustained improvisation resulting in a permanent personality changes. the assertion is nonsensical.

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw I've read personality profiles of Colbert in the NYT and elsewhere and dude seems perfectly well-adjusted

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

of course that could all be PART OF THE ACT

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

where was i reading an interview - maybe with louis - where at some clubs (maybe this was boston) comics would study the exits and the route to their car so that they could get out as fast as possible and not meet up with drunk people in the parking lot. the kind of clubs where you could get beat up for having a bad night or bombing.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

how crazy do you have to be to want to attack someone for failing to make you laugh

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

it happens!

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

I can imagine there've been actors, possibly including comedians, who have grown into their characters or gone native in some way, I'm just not sure why you'd single out Colbert in that regard
