btw the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago has one section devoted to the growth of the Bear movement out of the S&M/Leather scene, and the title on the wall is "From Sir to Grrrr."

They also have a nice library I could've browsed for hours.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

could you get an interlibrary loan

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like such an awful queer for not having seen "No Skin" yet, esp after having had a New Queer Cinema phase

alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:20 (thirteen years ago)

I pretty much prefer Araki to BLaB, even tho Gregg had a rather uninspired run in the mid to late '90s.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

speaking of queer filmmakers, Morbs, do you like Gael Morel's work? He's the cutie gay protag of Techiné's Wild Reeds; now a writer-director. I watched Full Speed last night, starring Stéphane Rideau (yum) and Elodie Bbouchez: a muddled take on WR material.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

Most of the Araki movies I've seen are "better" than every BLaB, but I much prefer the splatter-paint politicking in the latter's.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

i haven't seen 'the living end' but the only araki i've seen and liked is 'mysterious skin'

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, no, both Splendor and Smiley Face are definitely worse than Otto.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

I would agree that the only Araki film (that I've seen) as good as The Raspberry Reich in the last 15+ years is Mysterious Skin.

I'm sure the only Morel-directed film I've seen is The Clan aka 3 Dancing Slaves, which is just OK. This Deneuve vehicle looks intriguing, especially since I thought NYC arthouses released everything she's in, but apparently not!

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

What's the best REAL (forlacknof a better word) Araki film to watch to see if I like him? Love love love MYSTERIOUS SKIN but I always figured it was anomalous (based on a book, seems more grounded/plot-centric than his 90s stuff). Have KABOOM high up in my rental queue right now.

Never seen any LaBruce, but I edited a piece on hum for PopMatters last year and it all sounds pretty yucky.

Also, hey Owen!

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

The Living End is okay. He's written some of the worst dialogue ever said aloud by hapless hunks.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

my fave Araki film -- micro budget, louche teenagers -- is Totally F***ed Up.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

I hear Kaboom! is really embarrassing but have not seen. Didn't he make a movie based on Mark Beyer's "Amy & Jordan" strips?

alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

a friend once said of araki that "his films resist any kind of bourgeois closure" which i feel like is just a nice way to say "he doesn't really know how to write a screenplay"?

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

never heard that and don't know the Beyer comic, but apparently ppl see connections in The Doom Generation (which I loathed):

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

a few points:

- "If city gays hang out only with other gays, it usually means they’re boring, unadventurous, and parochial queens who think vaginas smell like fish. I have an announcement for these bitches: You’re basic." THIS IS SO OTM IT HURTS ME.

- Other than Mysterious Skin, Araki has made a lot of films that are edgy and interesting if you're a rebellious punk/gay teenager. (I remember watching TFU and The Doom Generation around the same time that the 'coming out' episode of Dawson's Creek was on). In other words, most of his films are fucking garbage.

- I don't understand this notion of the "new dire homo-normativity." Explain?

- I have wanted to watch Morel's films for a while. Worth it?

BLaB wrote about my new screenname. I just adopted it as my own because, let's be honest. :)

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

I presume he's talking about gays who blend, pass, or are otherwise non- (and hence, anti-) radical.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I could hang out only with other gays if I tried, esp since most of you who were here have left me. #abandonmentisssues

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)

oh so the New Dire Homonormativity is the reason i stopped going to gay bars where people my own age assemble? eugh.

That doesn't look like what I was picturing from the NDH.

lol the guy in the middle, my favorite

that's what it looks like to me. but yknow, i'm weird.

tabes, weren't you planning to travel our way in July? Anyone else, there are arty "queer interventions" going on this month, including one w/ mirrored masks & video at my friend's DJ night in W'burg this Saturday:

http://onlocation.dirtylooksnyc.org/

also, this is a chance to see Loads at the old Adonis Theatre! :o

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

haha, no, that does not look like homonormativity to me, bless you table. not enough hollister gear or armani exchange french-cut briefs iirc.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking more like polos and skinny jeans and promise rings.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

is that in LA? think i've seen some of the ppl in that photo around these parts

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

tbh one of the reasons i was really sad about the other side closing was that it's one of the few queer spaces in LA where older and younger gays coexist peacefully

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

iirc the new dire homonormativity is a gay porn tumblr of airbrushed teenflesh gifs run through instagram filters

i can't. i refuse to get instagram. i really don't ever want it. please don't make me

surm, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

Tho it would be kinda fun to live in a mindset that regards that crew as hopelessly normative.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

just took a look at that dirty looks map - the screening of the anti-'cruising' doc and 'sodom' is an inspired curatorial choice ('sodom' rules btw)

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

i think that my knowledge of homonormativity is incredibly skewed. even the 'norms' in SF bars i occasionally go to do not wear A/X, Hollister, or any of that stuff.

to me, the new dire homonormativity is more young gay men who are obsessed with avant-garde fashion, pop music, sex, and nothing else. two of the people in that photo above have told me, "You think too much." which might be true, but christ, my knowledge and love of partying is pretty well-known. i just don't do it (or see the point in doing it) in the same way as most other fags.

Hello, http://fyeahhipsterboys.tumblr.com/

I need to clean out my account one of these days.

also known as the old dire heteronormativity

Alas, I was not here when Sodom ran.

Showing William E. Jones' Tearoom at Julius' is a pretty wild idea. Some of the patrons may be in the film!

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

I don't doubt "normativity" means different things to different places, but I'm mostly speculating based on the context BLaB is covering/railing against.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

Which, since it's Vice, maybe I'm wrong.

the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

i tend to interpret the NDH as like "let's do our best to look acceptable for the GLAAD/HRC crowd" kind of stuff

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

*pre-emptively nails down lid on can of worms*

radical ferry (donna rouge), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

xxxxxxp

yeah, if that's the new homo-normativity, then i might not even be gay anymore. because compared to those folks, i look so buttoned up and bland it's not even funny. ah well.

it was nice being queer while it lasted. hard to keep up with the constantly-shifting goalposts of what is sufficiently outside-society's-approval.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

guys, it hurts my fingers and brain trying to spell "normativity"

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

I think he's pinpointing post-clubgoing people who want to get married, shop out of catalogs, die in Obamney's next war, and say "SEE, we are JUST like you are."
