Compare what Joan did to what Daniel Tosh did. If Joan went Tosh's route, instead of schooling that guy, she would've said "You know what would be funny? If I came down there with a screwdriver and punctured your eardrum so you'd be deaf too, fuckwit."

I should probably add that having to basically flee while Tosh was enthusing about how hilarious it would be if I was gang-raped in that small, claustrophic room was pretty viscerally terrifying and threatening all the same, even if the actual scenario was unlikely to take place. The suggestion of it is violent enough and was meant to put me in my place.

I really hope this gets remembered, as she puts it here, as an act of violence.

people saying shit can really fuck you up. it's like falling over, whenever i fall over i forget how disorienting and how much of a shake-up it is, but it happens and it's this physical kick that lurches you out of your comfort. words sound slight but they get under your skin, are hard to get past, change your idea of how you think of other people on the street. i don't think anyone is making a case that spoken insults are equivalent to acts of violence, but that they're in the same category, which is attacks.

I think it might even be kind of offensive to compare this scenario to an act of violence.

I should have elaborated. I was trying to suggest, as others put it differently above, that sicking the audience on her in this manner - in a dimly lit, claustrophobic room full of hostile strangers - is tantamount to a threat. Threats are a kind of act of violence. (A bit of verbal confusion here since one can also act out a threat.) When she writes that "the suggestion of it is violent enough" I think she's saying the same thing. That make sense? (I'm really curious, as I'm trying to determine how angry to be about this. Is his apology enough?)

You also weren't in a small, dark, enclosed theater. Also, if your display name is anything to go by, not a woman. So I don't really thing its fair to judge her for feeling legitimately threatened.

My comment had nothing to do with the woman, or Tosh, but with jim wondering out loud that he's "trying to determine how angry to be about this." I thought it was ridiculous that someone would try to logic themselves into a certain quantity of anger. If you're angry about it, be angry. You don't need to quantify it.
