Our cat, who splits his time indoors/outdoors, has been choosing mostly outdoors the past few days, to my surprise. I don't get it. He chows down his food, begs to go out, and then immediately finds some shade to pass out in. I'm like, dude, we've got A/C! Stay in! Are sitting duck baby bunnies that tempting? (Answer: yes)

I did just read that apparently cats are really good with heat, though humidity messes them up. Also, they can get heat stroke if the temp. gets high enough and they can't find shade. I read one cat site that said one symptom of cat heat stroke is coma, and that to be safe they should avoid exerting themselves. Keep that in mind, cat people.

my cat has been laying on her back and extending her legs out straight, pretty rude

i only have a window unit in one room -- i'd find my cat looking unhappy lying in the hot room, pick him up and take him where it was cool, but he'd always go back. tbf the window unit is kind of loud, but priorities, dude

yeah! what the hell w/ this

my cat usually prefers to hang out here in the bedroom with us but we get hit w/ a heat wave and she's nowhere to be found

am0n, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

Our cats like to like in the damn sun in the hottest room in the house instead of coming to the AC'ed rooms.

Jeff, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

my parents have started drinking very hot tea during the day "to cool off"

the late great, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)

Haha I composed a long post about the damn cats but Jeff beat me to it.

carl agatha, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

i have been telling people for years that hot coffee is good when it's hot out because the rest of the world seems less hot!

saturday -> 110

am0n, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

Today on my 30 minute public transit commute, it was 1) hot but not completely unbearable walking to the train; 2) pouring down rain hard enough that I got soaked running two train car lengths to the stairs at my stop; 3) kind of cool, relatively speaking for most of the walk home; and 4) a block from my house, the sun came out full force while it was still raining so it was hotter and more humid than it had been all day. Fucking creepy.

carl agatha, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

fucking hellish

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

Fuck this fucking fucked up shit. Every single person who is all 'ohhhh I can't wait for summer!!!' and isn't a school aged kid or living somewhere in the arctic circle can suck a dick

Cussing like a bunch of Bukowskis (sunny successor), Friday, 6 July 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

'ohhhh I can't wait for summer!!!'

no one says this anymore, thank god (except for canadians)

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:01 (thirteen years ago)

xp But there is snow! One must give summer props for eradicating snow. I live for summer and bare skin and sunshine. This IS hot but my limitless hatred of winter makes it easier for me not to complain.

^^^otm

I want to slap everyone in this building who was complaining about how cold it was 6 months ago and how hot it is now.

at least in the cold you can just keep adding layers. there's only so many you can take off in the heat.

xpost Our cat was born on a farm, where he was rescued one fall. We kept him inside successfully for a full year after that, more or less, but it got to the point where he was literally bouncing off the walls, trying to get out, and successfully escaping several times a day, every time we opened the door. He's the best cat we've ever had, but we're resigned to him getting hurt one of these days. We are, however, not in Chicago proper, so while we have traffic, we also have yards and stuff. He seems pretty aware of the dangers, though of course not as aware as we are.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

send ffm to baltimore and see if she sings the same tune

rayuela, otoh, may be some kind of fire beast

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure why I'm going to Baltimore. :( But it's pretty hot here too!

when its horribly humid and a hundred degrees and i see someone jogging i cry a little.

scott seward, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

summer just scares me now. i don't know how much of it is paranoia and how much of it is real though. the sun just feels toxic and hurtful on some days in ways that i've never felt before. but maybe i'm just getting old. except you are supposed to like heat more when you get older...i dunno, i'm always wondering if people will even be able to go outside in the summer in 10 or 20 years. but i'm a doom & gloom kinda guy. farmers almanac said it would be less warm this summer! bastard farmers.

scott seward, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

it is 20°C/68°F in toronto right now -- brutal

look above for zs's forecast for dc on saturday -- apparently baltimore will be ever so slightly worse

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

even with the bonkers temperatures the past couple weeks its been bearable up until yesterday and today cuz the humidity wasn't quite there. today it def felt kinda dangerous, very oven-like

am0n, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

am0n, Friday, 6 July 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

i live really close to the lake in chicago so we get a "breeze" but it's actually just feels like someone is following you around and holding a blow dryer an inch from your face

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

we'll back 70-90 and sunny from late july to october though when the ocean will suddenly cool

the late great, Friday, 6 July 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 04:10 (thirteen years ago)

the weather in the past week has convinced me that the best part about being rich aside from never having to worry about being bankrupt by a hospital stay would be the ability to live in different parts of the country (or world) as dictated by the weather

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 04:13 (thirteen years ago)

move to dallas, buy a house with an air-conditioned garage

mookieproof, Friday, 6 July 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

there's a lot of unincorporated land w/ that climate left in califonia, some places even warmer / cooler / sunnier / cloudier to your taste

job relocation is almost always expensive though, i can't afford to try portland (easy zing)

the late great, Friday, 6 July 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

xp well it's unseasonably warm all over right now - its 85f or so in my third floor apartment and it's expected to be 40 C (104 iirc) tomorrow and ugh why am I even typing this never mind my point was that I like to appreciate heat and I'm just going to do that and hope complainers don't usher in bleak rainy months
