how the hell did Louie decide on that actress to play his ex-wife?

Louis C.K. could individually lock each of us in a hotel room and make us watch him jerk it and he'd still be more highly regarded on this thread than Froggy B.S.

in an earlier episode, his sister referred to his ex as a "guinea" i believe
louis' deal with this show is that there is no continuity and he does not give a fuck about it. what i was surprised about was the suggestion louis could pull a woman that fine to bear his children
i enjoyed watching her work her jaw as she said "motorcycle... uh huh...."

yeah that was why i said upthread that it's maybe not worth it to call the show a 'sitcom' -- it's basically a series of autobiographical sketches, which occasionally have common threads but are more often than not discrete and not narratively connected.

this was maybe done out of respect to his ex - I thought not showing her face in Season 1 was kind of a classy move, but yeah compared to the women he sleeps with on the other episodes, this woman was something

i still think "here's me doing standup, here's me acting in a social situation" is a pretty lazy formula for a show and that a lot of the excitement around the show is that he doesn't keep up a lot of the usual standup-tv-vehicle artifice of three act stories and wacky friends, though. but i see the appeal, it pays off pretty well here and there, just not in love with the format. When we contacted the victim to check out the story, she wrote back: "first of all, your facts are wrong. and secondly, i don't want to be a part of this story. i'm sure you understand." When we asked her which facts were wrong and if the incident ever happened at all, she wrote: "please don't contact me about this matter anymore. Breast of luck to you."

those journalists over at gawker are really doing yeoman's work here

said this before, but i see the show more as an experiment than a sitcom or a drama. it's a series of vignettes based around a guy we know and can connect with. he's in donald duck continuity; we'll never hear about the car or the motorcycle accident or that ex-wife ever again. Fresh slate after every episode.

like a show that has no consistent cast members episode-to-episode and is shot all on location, usually with a ton of new ones per episode, is basically the furthest thing from lazy when it comes to making tv

i said the format is lazy. of course being lazy in some ways forces more work or creativity in other ways, it's a trade-off. but honestly at its worst 'Louie' to me is a lot like 'The Seinfeld Chronicles,' before the ensemble gelled and there was more of Jerry standing in front of a brick wall making jokes about the situation dramatized in the other parts of the episode.

except for it being different in every conceivable way a 30 minute comedy show set in nyc could be different

'every conceivable way'? c'mon man. there are a few ways.

ya but like, it's a one-camera show, shot on location, no laff track, story structure and tone varies wildly from ep to ep, comparing it to early seinfeld just cuz of the standup isnt fair

seinfeld is the better show

i mean it's a pretty cool and unique show, but i'm sorry if i don't want to give the guy a pulitzer for solving the decades-old 'i'm a talented standup with limited interest in acting and storytelling but i can't just tell jokes on tv for 30 minutes a week' problem in a mildly novel way.

he's a great storyteller! really am not sure what your problem is here

eh Louie has some great dialogue and some good, straightforward point-a-to-point-b stories that function basically like the setup and punchline of a joke but 'great storyteller' is a stretch

i feel like your entire opinion of this show can be boiled down to "eh" and you're just restating it in different ways

and everyone else's can be boiled down to "yay." sorry for wasting your time.

i was really trying to point out that it's not a huge shame or tragedy for louie to be found wanting, or seem unoriginal, compared to the most universally acclaimed and successful tv comedy of all time

i think its a different thing. a thing that excites me. seinfeld is genius in a different way. and to keep flogging it with the stand-up thing is silly. besides that there's no comparison to early seinz.

i thought i made it pretty clear that i wasn't comparing Louie at its best to Seinfeld at its best (in fact i pretty much said i was talking about both shows at their worst) and hoped noone would feel the need to take it there. my fault for bringing it up, i guess.

I love this show, but I still think Lucky Louie was better. challops, i know

the New Yorker review of season 3 in this week's issue was so over the top--someone needs to get that writer some smelling salts!

I'll continue to wave the flag for this. Pretty sure nobody has ever tried anything this out there.
Leo punching his head into the car window, climbing on his face and screaming "LICK IT JUST LICK IT" was a kind of amazing moment.

btw i re-listened to the wtf w/ louie and he goes all into his experiences w/ motorcycles and falling off and being in the hospital if anyone wants some perspective on the first episode
