I just want to rant a little about "manic pixie dream girl," first described by the yucky Nathan Rabin, and subject of this much yuckier video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBNss2PMj60

"The cause of the manic pixie dream girl is still little understood. Although my own theory is severe retardation of the brain."
Like I could say a lot of shit about this but I'm just going to say it's pesky. All those movies where they magic some creative type out of a funk, sure, it's played ººº but extending it to IRL I guess anyone with bangs and glasses is just too precious (=stupid?) to go on?

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

I mean I certainly don't believe that but it's the thesis of this video.

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

pesky sounds about right.

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

entire point of the stereotype is that it's a ridiculous reductive character type often written by men. using it as a stereotype for a real person makes no sense!

hot sauce delivery device (mh), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

the sketch isn't about about actual people, though. it's a "what if?" gag that strands a common fantasy character type as a fish out of water in the real world. kind of like enchanted, but less forgiving. the point is that the fantasy is more irritating than charming, or would be in real life. unfortunately, it winds up being more sexist than trenchant, especially with that "severe retardation of the brain" bit at the end. shitty comedy is shitty.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

P sure it's supposed to be about real coocoo ladies

I don't get all the Goldie Hawn hate.

Cunga, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

xp

does drift in that direction at the end with the craft table conversation, which is just "lol, lib chicks say stupid shit"

contenderizer, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

prior to that it seemed to be mocking the fantasy

contenderizer, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

using it as a stereotype for a real person makes no sense!

I know an IRL mpdg. She's super manic -- super happy, skipping everywhere, singing to herself, etc. most of the time -- and then when something crosses her she switches in an instant to slamming doors, drama, etc. One weekend she spent all day blowing bubbles on the sidewalk, waiting for people to walk by and then in a fit of whimsy waving bubbles all around them. The weekend before that she set out sidewalk chalk and got all these strangers to draw on the sidewalk and on the road. She's an art student and doesn't have to pay rent and is living the outgoing eccentric pipe-dream.

It's annoying as hell most of the time, unless I'm in an extremely good mood, which I hardly am ever.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

That's not a personality, that's a mental disorder or personality disorder!

Guilty laugh that this p much nails my reaction to an absurdly large number of behavior.

I too have known some v mpdgish g's. Also otm re: Rabin; I was reading a bunch of those My Year of Flops and it was so horribly written! Like just super-obvious community college school paper arts section-quality "humor" but peppered with offensive throwaway jokes/generalizations

lol, one of the "related videos" on Abbbottt's link is Zooey D on Kimmel.

Anyway, some observations I've made on the MPDG's I've known that don't get translated into the movies:

  • Some are lesbians. Always have been, always will be.
  • They don't go after guys that are opposites in attempts to "change them". More often than not, they find a straight guy of similar inclination and lock them down to the degree of a common-law marriage with the odd case of eventual matrimony. Some of the most stable relationships I know involve these people.
  • If they haven't done the above, they may latch on to a gay guy and go through many of the motions of a romantic relationship minus sex and such. I have a MPDG pal who just went through a breakup-esque episode because her "boyfriend" (who, might I add, is in a committed same-sex relationship) had to move far away for work.
  • There are others that are just serious loners.

This is like one of the biggest sites on the internet with like advertisers in like a legit, non-Chan/non-Reddit capacity right? Or do i have my understanding of Buzzfeed wrong?

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 20 July 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

I thought buzzfeed was mostly goofy videos and list articles?

Did Anyone See Mordy's List of Definitive Hardcore Albums?

anyway, I used buzzfeed for a while but they kinda have no quality control at all for some reason. I got tired of reading articles by bigoted idiots that had gotten buzzed up somehow.

I ask because, although I find this fairly amusing, I can't help the feeling that BMW expects us to laugh at the little woman -- when in fact pretty much anyone without significant motorsport experience would freaking out at least that hard.

Well, they're both pretty little.

Rule of thumb: "Top Gear" would not do this, it's not 'sexist' enough.

I was playing a "School" themed TOTP2 to the girls, I've mentioned a couple of tracks' responses in other threads. Yesterday, this one came up and Alice was all "awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww......"

This morning, she found the above and we all laughed a bit. Then she found the original and played it in full, and we were all "can you stop now or we leave the room?"
