too effing hot

It was a couple of degrees cooler today. I left the house three times and lived.

Starting Monday the company and union decided to change our working hours to 6 until 4 because too many employees were having or near having heat strokes. Also I used a temperature gun to measure the heat of the ground at 4:30 and it was 165 F!

Big morning rainstorms in Houston yesterday, got down to the upper '70s and was no worse than low '80s until the sun came out late afternoon. Thought I was dreamin' for a second there.

A storm in the Washington DC area has caused the worst power outage of my entire life, affecting 1.5 million homes and businesses. My home hasn't had power for over two days now, and they aren't expecting to restore power in some areas for another five days. This with temps over 100F.

Chicago is at 79° at 9:00 am which is pretty gross. Walked about a mile home last night and I was soggy and sticky. I barely ever sweat at all, I just get clammy, like I have drying salt water on my skin.

felt so toxic walking to work yesterday. i only walk about 6 or 7 blocks and when i got to the store i felt like i'd been beat up. i have NO idea how people work outside all day in that. i mean there is sun and there is sun. this was the kinda x-ray sun that felt like it was zapping my insides.

i've often thought that this is what it feels like to get cooked, like really cooked from the outside in.

Feted friends' engagement (one of whom is an ILXor) today which was at a bar patio. It was in the low 90s and humid and I melted into a pitiful, complaining blob. It would have been more manageable if I'd showered this morning, but I was running extremely behind, so I just washed my face and slapped on deod/antiperspirant. Wearing clothes in the heat without having showered is disgusting.

Played golf yesterday in 104 degree heat, which in a lifetime of having done some pretty stupid things, was pretty high on the list. Almost puked on the 18th green.

Dehumidifier fail. Took the moisture out but left it hotter than before, a Devil's bargain. So back to A/C it is.

That's the tragedy of dehumidifiers. I bought one when I lived in a garden apartment that was cool enough in the summer to tolerate, but was so damp that mold formed in the closet and under the sink. It sucked b/c it ran non-stop and made it hot enough to make A/C necessary.

You know what? I'm gonna stop fronting.

Power restored in my home after being for two days. Still 200,000 in the DC area without power though.

Gonna look into portable generators - just want one powerful enough to run a single window A/C, a fridge, and some low-wattage stuff like an internet router and a few LED light bulbs.

Dehumidifiers dry the air, but leave it somewhat warmer than before. Good for cool but damp places like some basements, but not a substitute for air conditioning.

99 degrees, time to hit the attic to start sorting through boxes and move everything out!

Cleveland finally getting some damned rain and it's a doozy of a storm. But it's supposed to be 92 by 5pm.

I keep checking the coils of the AC units for ice, thinking "Maybe there's a leak or something."

There's no leak. It's just 78º in the house and that's all there is to it. Lord knows the AC is trying.

i think tonight is the night the heatwave breaks here

We didn't get a bit of rain during the 3 weeks when the temps ramped up to 100+, but yesterday we finally had a thunderstorm pass through with a 40-minute shower, and it's been rainy and reasonably cool all morning today. Finally.

Holy shit, ZS. That forecast is giving me a little mini panic attack.

100 yesterday, today, and tomorrow. HOWEVER extended forecast shows temps back down into the 80s (w/ a couple days in the 90s, and a few in the 70s) starting on Saturday and I am really really happy about that.

Today we had two people say they couldn't work any longer, one guy was throwing up. It was very hot.

Dropped a good 15 degrees after it rained today. 92 never felt so reasonable.

well it's only 70 degrees here but if you're near the ground or just not moving it gets hotter than that pretty quick

at that point if you can't take off your fur you have to retreat to cooler climes

haha i just caught my cat in almost exactly that position laying narrowly outside my bedroom door, the single room in the apt with an AC unit

Our cat, who splits his time indoors/outdoors, has been choosing mostly outdoors the past few days, to my surprise. I don't get it. He chows down his food, begs to go out, and then immediately finds some shade to pass out in. I'm like, dude, we've got A/C! Stay in! Are sitting duck baby bunnies that tempting? (Answer: yes)

I did just read that apparently cats are really good with heat, though humidity messes them up. Also, they can get heat stroke if the temp. gets high enough and they can't find shade. I read one cat site that said one symptom of cat heat stroke is coma, and that to be safe they should avoid exerting themselves. Keep that in mind, cat people.
