the words 'smile' and 'smiles' appear 27 times in the first 2 chapters (9 pages). FYI said chapters are available here free (legally)

I was on the train the other day and a very annoying loud woman was on the phone to a friend (why some women feel a desperate need to talk to their girlfriends at 8am on the train at great length, every morning, I have no idea but thats an aside...) anyway out of nowhere shes all "oh and OMIGAWD, have you heard about that 50 shades of grey book, OMIGAWD, I hear its like, full on PORN, like, it is FULL ON, I kind of want to read it, you know? Like no really, it is FULL ON".

(this is Aus bogan slang for "it is livelier than your usual Mills and Boon, I assure you").

This left me kind of bemused. Is the fact it has porn at all, some kind of selling point? Like, do these women find this shocking/surprising, like it is a new thing that you can - omigawd - BUY BOOKS WITH REALLY RUDE STUFF IN.

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Thursday, 28 June 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

True story. I was in a bookstore near the University of Chicago today (57th Street Books, best bookstore on Earth), and an older African-American lady came into the store and asked for 50 Years of Grey.

The "Fifty Shades" erotic trilogy is expected to hit the 20 million-sales mark in the U.S. this week, making it one of the fastest-selling book series in recent memory.

....

For much of the spring, the trilogy's author, E. L. James, accounted for one in five adult-fiction physical books sold in the U.S., according to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks 75% of U.S. book retail sales.

Steam Sale Jonesin' (kingfish), Monday, 9 July 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

yo do any of you guys feel like you'd want to hook up with e.l. james just to see what it would be like
like, when she tried to send you to 7-11 to get some kool whip and you just straight up lay it down and bring out all sorts of REAL WORLD freaky shit that she's clearly never experienced since she's pushing these "like a bag of sand"-level descriptions of sex
you guys know what i mean?

dylannn, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

or like when you play the "would you?" game at work with customers and you always WOULD with some sort of e.l. james-lookin broad because you'd make her feel like a woman goddamnit bring your absolute A game to her pussy and show her what it's all about

the only thing i was feeling was the part where he rips the tampon out

i be doing that shit too. put a towel down.

dylannn, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

my point is basically: i'd lick her ass, whatever, make her feel dirty. she'd never write about some swiss millionaire putting apple butter in her pussy or whatever the fuck this book is about.

dylannn, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

In this way, you speak for us all.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

speaking for myself, just because she wrote a dumb book about a stern man doesn't mean she deserves to be sexually humiliated by a stern fan.

i meant the opposite. it'd be some earthy beautiful no-shower-beforehand no props lovemaking going down. no humiliation.

although unfortunately that seems to be what she's into based on this book.

Saw a bro reading the paperback on the subway this morning.

Also have noticed a few not very handsome wall street types wearing grey ties like the one on the cover lately.

I'm highly amused that these stupid tomes that I've had to walk past displays of in airports have infected even my home.

Man, when I was in middle school I read Michael Crichton books, including Disclosure. Probably gave me some weird, wrong ideas about sex, but by the time I was in high school I'd decided he was a shitty writer and I was skeptical of anything I read in there so there probably wasn't any long-term harm.

I finally saw my first sighting of this book in the wild! A couple of older women eating at a table next to me we're discussing a John Grisham novel ("Hilarious!") with a copy of 50 Shades of Gray sitting on the table between them.
