Friend came over and we did an impromptu tasting of each of the woodford bottles. We approve, but the aged one needs a sliver of ice/splash of water to open it up

In their Soho (London) shop (I popped in today because i was in the area).

The nice lady in there said that she seems to sell a lot of the stuff to very pleased American tourists. Prices start at £48 for the weaker 10-year.

$50 was what the 15-year was going for less than a year ago. Back when you could still sometimes find it. So £48 for the 10 ... wow, from an exchange rate perspective. Tim, how much the 15?

I didn't make a note, I'm afraid - I think it was something like £75 but don't hold me to that.

I won't be in Chicago for a few months but I'm a fairly regular visitor there, fwiw...

Ha, you got my wheels spinning! But even £48 is a lot for a bottle of bourbon, given we live in a golden age when, I dunno, bargains like Old Weller, Elijah Craig and Ancient Ancient Age abound.

UK prices for US-whisky are always high, except for supermarket stuff like JD.

It seems roughly that $x in the USA becomes £x here, at best!

My excellent local drinks shop sometimes has Winkle Rye, for around £68.

This is more indicative of the price differential...

when the woodford rye 2-pack came out here it was actually around 100 before i started to see it closer to 70 so the price of that thing has kind of been all over the place

Anyway, I'm drinking a little closer to home tonight, with some Ardbeg 10.

that site above has laphroaig for £30 which would be $47. laphroaig here is generally $50 - (more commonly) $60.

That £30 ( as with all quoted uk prices) includes tax. Which your US figures might too, but I can never tell.

Whichever one is in the picture above. Ive had that one.

I like EC12. It doesn't have a lot of character, but like Woodford it's pretty smooth and mixes well. Also, it's got a cool giant cork.

It's a vital component of a cocktail I like the call the Gut Cleaner. Needless to say, after the Gut Cleaner, you'll need the Squirt and Mop for the floor. It's all quite symbiotic.

Per CAD's recommendation, I picked up a bottle of Four Roses OESQ a few months back. I thought it was a little too hot for my tastes, and didn't really like the flowery flavor undertones. But I'm going to bust it out again when the cold months come and try it again.

curious how the galileo is, if you decide to drink it. i passed on a bottle when they were available here.
