― rayuela, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)
I didn't like *any* of the guys in the show for the first 2 or 3 episodes. Now I'm like 'awww you guys <3!' lol
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)
really liked the gawker recap again, just as a thing to read.

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)
Aye I suppose that is something - while there's no Girls there's no Girls recap. Unless John Cook actually goes off the deepend and starts portraying The Further Adventures of Lena & Friends.
― Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
he's promised no girls recaps even when the show comes back. i'd really be into that girls recaps continues without the show idea though!
― s.clover, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
it's more or less what he's doing anyway
― Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
his recaps are actually pretty factual and accurate, just very... particular.
― s.clover, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
he tries to mock them for things they're doing intentionally. hes muddying the interpretive waters, its dumb
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
I read some of these and I find him kind of annoying
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
muddying the interpretive waters! couldn't we just say he's "problematizing the text" instead, and give him a gold star?
― s.clover, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)
I won't read him anymore

intentionally misreading obvious signposts is idiotic imo. we're not talking abt deconstructing the text here hes just looking at something red & trying to tell us its blue
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
deconstruction of the text, whatever
those recaps are the worst

it's shameful behaviour, really. and shameful writing too, of course.

this show's advances in the realm of progressive womanist television are very nearly undermined by its oblivious, exclusionist and unknowingly racist (the worst kind, no?)
no.
― schwantz, Thursday, 21 June 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
overheard: "it's the 21st century, we don't more shows about what it's like being a rich, quirky Jew living in NYC"

wait, unknowing racism is the worst kind?
― how did we get here how? (ytth), Friday, 22 June 2012 03:52 (thirteen years ago)
yes. europeans were more racist before they had ever met africans than when they enslaved them.
― here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)
the subtext of that article makes it very clear the author is reaching to find things to hate about the show. "DREADING" the crack episode because the show would most likely show latino or black people smoking crack (and then chalking up the fact that it didn't to its overall racism) is an example... or the eventual claim that dunham's otherization of the rooftop partiers in coney island is the worst form of racism, no?

Next season, the African-American comedian Donald Glover has a role. Yay.
imo the sarcasm in this sentence is more racist than anything in the show?
― carly rae (flopson), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
it's so annoying, the way she's just painting these doodling longwinded circles around why she doesn't like the show but she doesn't want to say she doesn't like the show. UGH and her handwringing over Bushwick Crackcident was clearly misplaced and yet it's half the article?
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)
like I'm all for criticism of the show but that just seemed like a waste of everyone's time including hers
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:32 (thirteen years ago)
that essay got reposted on salon. apart from the sheer badness of the writing ('i sometimes hate-watched and sometimes like-watched' -- srsly, there are ACTUAL WAYS to express this sentiment without resorting to cutesy livejournal-isms), i can't get over how smug and insular the tone is. for all her complaints about the show being 'exclusionist' she writes like someone who's never had to talk to a person who disagrees with her.
also i must've missed all those scathing 'race critiques' of seinfeld she alludes to, ha.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
i mean what does it say about the kind of insular world you live in if you actually believe that 'unknowing racism' is 'the worst kind' of racism?
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)
