I'd thought the Italians might be this tournament's big team to implode, given the Serie A situation, but they clearly don't give a fuck.

Last time something like this happened Italy went on to win the World Cup. Corruption scandals are clearly good for Italian football.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:05 (fourteen years ago)

also Rossi returning from his ban to be a hero. The lads there's a weight off their shoulders now that it's all out in the open.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:08 (fourteen years ago)

there's always a corruption scandal in italian football.

mizzell, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

yah, it's not as if the national team only performs well in the aftermath of a corruption scandal it's more that going into practically every tournament there is a corruption scandal.

pandemic, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

I thought this one might be SO BIG that it'd break the camel's back, though. But clearly not!

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

They can't win it anyway, cos Cassano's wasn't born on the day they last won it, or something. (Didn't he say some shit about the 2006 WC win regardcuing that? That it was his destiny?)

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

he's born the day after the 82 win iirc

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

Aha.

What's he thinking in there?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

So there are actually people looking forward to seeing Roo-ful on the pitch tonight? Ugh.

I hope Hodgson sticks to his guns. Carroll (cunt) scored, Welbeck scored. Why bring in fucking Rooney? I for one can't stand the sight of the guy.

Gutted for Croatia, that Modric pass midway through the second half was beautiful. Someone should sign him.

^^ This so OTM. Modric played some sprawling football last night. That pass out of which [croationname] should have scored was orgasmic.

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

44 games and 35 goals this season, 28 in 74 for England, scares the shit out of opposition defenders, strong, great technique, great vision and awareness, works his heart out for the team, best player in the country, that kind of thing.

xposts.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

No I know Nick. But you know, he sucks.

Don't mind me, but he's the Robben of England, the rotten apple imho.

I wish there could exist and England without Terry and Rooney. It could have been so nice.

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

great technique, great vision = no....

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

some games yes, others no

Number None, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

i really shouldn't have said anything though

Number None, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

he is pretty good technically, sure, but great technique suggests rvp or benzema or something

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

in terms of shooting yeah, he's generally appalling

Number None, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

just general technique

rvp>>>>>>>balotelli>>benzema>>>rooney>>>>>>>gomez>>huntelaar>>>lewandowski

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

when he's on though, i would say he's a better passer than any of them (including crosses, which he's surprisingly excellent at)

Number None, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

I was only really trotting out those superlatives in relation to anyone else in our squad...

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

Very harsh on Lewy, he's much better at link-up play and through balls than Gomez imo. Have you seen him play for Dortmund much?

boxall, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

rvp is better imo but you don't see it so often when he plays as a #9

rooney better than the rest probably yeah....although passing is about vision as much as skill

anyway as i much as i detest this england team, the chance to play a successful, established forward line consisting of two actual football players (in the sense other countries might recognise) in welbeck and rooney, is one of the only things in their favour

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

haven't paid too much attention to his defending but i've liked the look of gebre selassie going forward.

Chris, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

i really shouldn't have said anything though

No Sheva tonight :-(

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

Big sadface.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

Generally I'll rep for Rooney but I'm abstaining tonight after his pre-match spotify fiasco:

Deacon Blue – Real Gone Kid
Arctic Monkeys – Riot Van
Stereophonics – Maybe Tomorrow
Bon Jovi – It's My Life
Various Artists - Oasis Tribute – Champagne Supernova (Cover Version)
Cat Stevens – Father And Son
Damien Rice – Delicate
James Morrison – Up
Eric Clapton – Tears In Heaven
Bruce Springsteen – Streets Of Philadelphia
The Hummingbirds – Doesn't Really Matter

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

That's either the playlist of someone who hates playing for England and is fucking miserable or someone who's about to flip and needs the calm the fuck down beforehand. Or both.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

Makes one wonder about the secret powers of 'Tears in Heaven'. Maybe that's what gets him up in the morning, drives him to score goals etc. Too awkward...

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

The idea of JT rousing the troops to a soundtrack of 'Tears In Heaven' is one I like.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

:-)

those official player escorts look somewhat younger than twp's usuals

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

"Official player escorts" means something VERY different to John Terry, right?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

superb gratuitous pendant shot there
