the price premium to upgrade to 256 is not worth it - just get an external, imo

un® (dayo), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

ljubljana you're only allowed to use the discount once every two years

not true ime. I did actually buy an iMac a couple weeks after my aunt got a laptop.

catbus otm (gbx), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Price-check MacMall vs. EDU discount - you can customize through them and sometimes the savings on sales tax comes out even better than the EDU discount.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

i cant imagine rockin a laptop with only 128gb internal hard drive, it would be like a step back to 2004

sometimes you need to take a step back to move forward

MacMall sadly costlier. I might see if the store will order it in for me with the edu discount and then sell it to me. I'm such a wimp. I fear that markers visit (forums talk about 'audits').

ljubljana, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

gbx - i think you can only individually buy one of each product every two years if you do it in the online store

in person i'm not sure how it works, maybe they just vouch for you?

the late great, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 04:10 (fourteen years ago)

Every single time I've had any issue with education discounts or Applecare or whatever the response I've gotten has been, essentially, "lol i don't give a fuck let's party"

so, gbx otm

I kind of hope if I have random weird issues while traveling it is in Las Vegas because my friend's sis had MacBook probs there and that is the default LV apple store response

mh, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

Considering a new computer soon, most likely a MacBook but purchased from Best Buy Apple bc I need damage protection plan and Apple seems allergic to it. Why?? I was finally able to get insurance on my iPhone from AT&T after 1 serious incident and years of paranoia. The protection plan on my Dell paid for itself after one very destructive episode somnambulism and I can't see going without one now.

Je55e, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

EDU was one purchase per product line per year a few years ago

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

new iPhone applecare has a blanket "pay $50, we swap out your damaged phone" plan

mh, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, I could live with that. I will definitely check it out when I get a new iPhone. The AT&T plan has a deductible of $100 I think. Maybe $150. It's $6/month, so it's still worth it.

Je55e, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

my god, its full of stars

the late great, Friday, 22 June 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Friday, 22 June 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

i priced out some necessary repairs for this busted ass a1260 today

bezel and/or entire display for flickering and reversed video $25 - $125

deadstock keyboard and top case for typing and trackpad problems $150

refurb fans for heat and noise $50

deadstock pan for dust problems $50

and some upgrades

ram from 4 to 6 $50

240 gb ssd $250

at these prices i should just buy a new secondhand machine

the late great, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

toally

kinda funny to hear it referred to as an "a1260," who talks about macs like that?

Software developers and IT technicians. Decoding a problem with someone's "MacBook Pro" is an exercise in frustration without something other than the location of the power-on button to identify it.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

idk, I am a software developer and I thought they mostly had names like "MacBook Pro 6,2"

That works too.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 01:55 (thirteen years ago)

mine is a 4,1 but i find its easier to google parts w/ a1260

the late great, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

i'm going to hold out to see if i get a new work laptop in which case i'd maybe just go for a 27" imac

this mbp is perfect for music though so i wonder if i can just buy a semi busted one for parts

the late great, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

So IT arrived and I still stand by my earlier assessment - build quality on this is frighteningly good. I've been a strong advocate of the Never Get The First New Model Of Anything policy, and I still am for the most part but I considered it to be another midlife crisis.

Anyway, it feels completely atemporal - as if it fell back in time somehow from that 70s-era sci-fi future where featureless somethings could cause Cosmic changes without any moving parts at all.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

does the imac not feel like that?

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:26 (thirteen years ago)

ipad doesn't imo

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:26 (thirteen years ago)

does the imac not feel like that?

Not really.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's the best computer i've ever had, but it's still a computer

Nhex, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:56 (thirteen years ago)

it's not a magical device that will change your life?

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 06:52 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 06:52 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 11:11 (thirteen years ago)

Depends in how hard you throw it

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Saturday, 7 July 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

tbh, it WAS a magical device that did change my life

Nhex, Saturday, 7 July 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Haven't tried any of the refreshed MBAs yet, but it certainly feels faster than the previous gen-MBA. My previous computer was a five-year-old Aluminum MBP (the very first Core 2 Duo one) and was relatively pokey these days (especially whenever I was working in Logic or GarageBand), so the jump to 4x the RAM and a SSD drive was an instant WHOA, THE FUTURE moment.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 7 July 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

my MBA retina is ordered, estimated delivery between 8/3 and 8/9 right now but based on other people's experiences I'd expect it to come a bit sooner.

Apple Lusting p. hard right now

The Cheerfull Turtle (Latham Green), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

so, still pricing stuff out and

1) if i were to buy a last-generation macbook pro, would it be reasonable to expect that i could upgrade to a 256gb ssd for less than apple's bto price of ~ $500?

2) is it reasonable to say that if you're not going to get a 13" mbp (w/ integrated gfx and no geforce 650) that you might as well just get a mba?

i keep running into the fact that if i were to pimp out a new pre-retina mbp w/ an ssd i end up more or less at the same price as the cheaper retina mbp

the late great, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

I have the last gen i5 macbook pro with the hi-res antiglare 15" screen and discrete graphics. What I told myself is I'd just wait and wait and wait until it started feeling slow and then I'd put in the SSD. I haven't reached that point yet. And I'm still just using 4 gigs of RAM. It's not my main computer but I still do some decent "pro" work and it's been fine. Eventually I'll double the RAM and switch to SSD, but not yet, and the prices will keep coming down.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

gah i fucked up #2

what i'm saying is since the 13" mbp and the mba are both missing the geforce they're going to feel pretty similar because the intel graphics are going to limit performance more than the clock speed
