― dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Sunday, 17 June 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)
an old school one here: chanty-wrassler - useless person. literally means chamberpot-wrestler. someone who at night, no doubt in a crowded tenement room shared with many kinfolk, who is maladroit with their usage of the chamberpot and causes disruptive noise(?) or spillage(?).
never heard "stoaty", "plook" means pimple, zit, spot. "plooky" means "spotty"

aye it's a good one, but archaic. my grandad used to say it, most people my parent's age would know it, but no-one my age (late 20s) would use it, and no doubt many wouldn't have heard it, and it will have completely disappeared soon enough :c

wank as a noun, but not to denote the act of masturbation, but rather as a pejorative term for a person.

I bet if you did an ILX search on most of these it would lead you to a Scottish football thread.

What's the difference between a ned and a dobber?
― Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)
a dobber's a bit like a dick.
ned is obv a pejorative but it doesn't really work as an insult, too generalised, never mind the class connotations. if it's successful here i'll be v disappointed. what makes terms such as bawbag and numpty work is that they are very nuanced.
― Merdeyeux, Monday, 18 June 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)
Wiki implied that dobber was related to English chav, which I, perhaps lazily, thought was related to ned.
― Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)
hm ya, chav and ned overlap a lot, but i've not heard dobber used in that way.

If they could agree on the spelling of "sassenach" I'd go with that, as that was another classic granny put-down.

Talk of 'tims' on the Rangers Have Gone Into Administration thread has reminded of something my dad used to say about his dad, my grandad (who died when I was too young to remember him), he used to say that he worked "timming sand boats". This was always said in the context of how he (my dad that is) not only never 'ad nuthin' ever and how he felt looked down on because his father only "timmed sand boats". This was entirely incomprehensible to me as a child but, thanks to the internet, I discover that 'tim' is a Scots word (verb + adj.) for 'empty' and a sand boat is some kind of dredger.
